Hôtel du Couvent, Nice

1 Rue Honoré Ugo, 06300 Nice, France. (show on map)

Hôtel du Couvent is a breathtaking restoration of a 17th-century convent tucked away in the labyrinthine streets of Nice’s Old Town, known as Vieux Nice. Transformed by the Perseus hotel group, the property honors its monastic origins by preserving original stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and quiet courtyards that have stood for centuries.

The design philosophy focuses on “secular monasticism,” balancing the building’s heritage with refined, minimalist luxury. Instead of standard hotel layouts, the space feels like a village within a city. It features a private botanical garden, an apothecary selling natural remedies, and an underground spa built into the historic cisterns, where you can soak in stone baths that date back hundreds of years.

The property is also a celebration of local agriculture. It manages a nearby two-hectare farm, Les Jardins du Couvent, which supplies the hotel’s kitchens with fresh, seasonal produce. Guests can even wander through the lush green spaces or take workshops that connect them to the traditional Provencal way of life.

Its location is perfect for soaking up the local atmosphere. You are just steps away from the vibrant Cours Saleya flower market and the bustling waterfront. Whether you are exploring the nearby Matisse Museum or just wandering the narrow alleys for a slice of socca, the hotel offers a serene, elevated retreat that feels worlds away from the busy Mediterranean coast.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“Hôtel du Couvent, in the heart of Old Town, is a beautifully restored former convent originally established in 1604. The walled grounds include a Roman-inspired bath, two acres of gardens and a restored herbalist shop, once run by nuns, that provides tinctures and teas, as well as herbs for the kitchen.”

CN Traveler review:

“There’s a deep sense of contemplation about this former nunnery turned hotel in Nice’s Old Town. The 88 bedrooms include carefully conjoined nuns’ cells, airy conversions of chapter rooms, and those in a sensitively added new wing—all lime plaster, muted linens, and antique finds.”

Travel+Leisure review:

“We pulled up at the foot of Colline du Château, and there it was: the Couvent de la Visitation Sainte-Claire, circa 1604, looking decidedly un-hotel-like. Arrival was a clever bit of theater, separating you from both modern Nice and your own reality with surgical precision.”

Nice hotel but over priced breakfast and drinks

Quirky charm and a great location

Not ideal for elderly due to steps and the location at the top of a hill.

A truly memorable stay that makes me want to return.

The hotel’s facilities and atmosphere make you feel relaxed and give a sense of privacy. The food here is excellent! every ingredient used is premium quality.

I love the hotel’s lush and secluded surroundings, as well as the swimming pool that overlooks the beautiful city view of Nice. Another highlight is the Roman Bath, which is beautifully designed and thoughtfully arranged for convenience and comfort.

The hotel is not located directly on the main road and isn’t very close to the train station, but it’s definitely worth it for the view and the peaceful atmosphere. The hotel also provides transportation service for guests, which makes traveling much easier.

It was an exception stay in an oasis of calm and charm.

The excellent manner in which a historic building was renovated and made into a charming hotel, maintaining its original character. It was an oasis of calm in a bustling city on the Cote D’Azur.

The monastery is good, but the abbot is incompetent

I really like the location. I always choose the closest to the port (because there is a yacht every day), the closest to the Promenade des Anglais (because there is a morning run every day), and the market in the old town. I have been to La Perouse and the Swiss Hotel many times and was always satisfied. I tried the Hôtel du Couvent (Marriott chain) for the first time and was disappointed.

The breakfast at the hotel is acceptable.

I like the design of the rooms. Very calm color scheme, done with taste and thoughtfully.

I believe that the hotel has potential for improvement, namely: finding competent managers at all levels.
1. Deception with parking. They promised wallet parking, but the meeting point for wallet parking is not a place to wait, but a roadway where you can’t park, and no one meets you. The hotel asks you to send the name and number of the car to meet them, but it's probably just for fun. Saint Moses walked through the desert and waited for the commandments for 40 years, and here some tourists can't wait 20 minutes on the tram tracks. So what if the room costs 800 euros/day, let them wait. You call them all the time, and they tell you that yes, yes, your guide to the world of parking is on the way.
2. The hotel uses a butler service via WhatApp. But there are constantly changing managers who do not look at previous correspondence. They asked for two plates and two forks for a picnic on a yacht for tomorrow. This turned out to be such an unusual request for a hotel that they probably convened the Marriott board of directors. And so it is with all small requests. Everything takes a very long time.
3. The cleaners right under your window consider it very important to wash the street with water at 06:30am, and then noisily (as if I were at an Alfred Schnittke concert - creaks, blows, knocks, glass and foam) drive this water into the wells with a floor mop. The windows are open in August, and as a result, the guests wake up.
4. Hotel manager Mr Ragon arrived late for the meeting. Butler service replied that Mr Ragon was waiting at the reception, but he was not there. He arrived much later and promised that the remaining days would be exceptional service. Nothing changed. It was an empty promise. And as exceptional service, they added extra to our bill at check-out. When we wrote a letter to the hotel and pointed this out, they returned the money. At least thanks for that.

One time experience in middle of nice

Beautiful venue, spa and staff. The rooms are beautiful,. incredible attention to details. You do feel like a getaway lm the middle of nice. Beautiful location, walking around old town. The room is comfortable, the bed and all facilities. Beautiful farm and food.

My only issue was the service by the pool. There are no beds directly to the pool and almost no service. Wait for so long to order and no one came.

What a wholesome stay. Much much recommended!

It was so beautiful! An old monastery very well taken care of. The land is huge and so charming! There was a cute little garden growing tomatoes and lettuce.

Nothing! It was perfect.

This hotel is absolutely unforgetable.Wonderful.

The staff was exceptional. The property was beautiful, and special. The breakfast was superb. They took care of our little dog all day when we had to go to the emergency room. He had a wonderful time. No TV was great.

Everything ws very clean and the bed and the bed linens were good quality.

Room service was amazing. I did

I would suggest that they put a fruit bowl in the room for our arrival, and a welcome note.

Many hotels in this category do this and it is very nice.

Also, only the suites have bathtubs.

Unbeatable panorama of Nice from pool and its terrace trumps any niggle - except, possibly, value.

Beautiful renovation of a former convent. The hotel only opened in early 2024. The view from the pool and its terrace, on the top-most level of the grounds, is a panorama of Nice and Vieux Nice at your feet. It is actually just below the Panorama de la Vielle Ville de Nice on the Colline du Chateau. The whole complex of buildings, both the original convent buildings and the new accommodation wing, are superbly done. Do not be disappointed if you are allocated a room in the new wing, it is gorgeous and so sympathetically designed in character with the original. Wonderful architecture! Jolly good cocktails.

This was the only top-rate hotel in Vieux Nice that I could find with an outside pool. With this panoramic view, it would have blown away any competition.

Ludicrously drawn-out check in process, taking half an hour! One has just arrived after a tiring journey and just wants to get to the room; the pool; into the sun; off sightseeing before the sun goes down. It was explained that this process of sitting down for a drink and it taking forever is to make guests feel special and cherished. Please don't. Just let us get on with our brief stays after a warm, attentive and SWIFT welcome with minimal fuss.

It is a long and exposed trek up to the swimming pool terrace, at a guess, two hundred feet above the ground floor. No lift to that level. There is nowhere private to change up there, nor a pool bar, so go prepared. It is also the same trek back down to the nearest lavatory.

I did not use the spa so this amenity may have changed my view but I consider the very 5 star price de trop for the facilities and very much too much for the breakfast. (I have never complained of value for money at any other 5 star hotel.)

Great estate but quite disappointing, food is not great and rooms are very noisy.

Beautiful setting located in old town, stunning property

Rooms are not sound proof at all and we can hear everything happening outside including people just walking on the street. Also the food wasn’t great. The diner experience was quite disappointing, and breakfast was very slow and not great. The bistrot below is nearly half the price and has much better food. I would expect a lot more for a 5 star luxury hotel that charges over 1000 euros a night

Fabulous rooms and staff. Restaurant perhaps did t quite live up to everything else for dinner.

Calm very nicely decked out. Staff delightful. An oasis.

There was a step down directly in entering the room that was a bit of a trip hazard when entering the room at night. Could have had a nasty accident as you do t expect it so suggest they put mins the step on the door. Also no hooks in bathroom to hang towels so you had to cross the bathroom naked to get a towel.

Great for a holiday!

The hotel is beautiful from the entrance to the restaurant, bar, and room! The room was very spacious and comfortable. The spa was also lovely, providing a relaxing atmosphere. The room service breakfast was delicious, and I highly recommend their in-house bakery.

The location was also excellent, right in the old town.

The level of service from the hotel staff was inconsistent. Some were very friendly and helpful, while others were quite indifferent, which affected our mood a bit.

Really loved it.

I liked everything about this hotel!

The only thing that was not as good as the rest was the snack food at the bar on the hill.

It was a shame the restaurant wasn't open longer hours as I missed lunchtime and had to leave for my flight to early to have dinner.
