The Royal Sonesta, New Orleans

300 Bourbon Street, French Quarter (Vieux Carré), New Orleans, LA 70130, United States of America (show on map)

The Royal Sonesta New Orleans is a legendary fixture in the heart of the French Quarter, occupying a site that dates back to 1721. While the land originally housed a brewery, the Sonnabend family transformed it into the iconic hotel seen today during the 1960s. Designed by the firm Curtis and Davis Architects, the building was meticulously crafted to blend into the historic architectural landscape of the neighborhood.

The hotel is famous for its elegant, wrought-iron balconies overlooking Bourbon Street, which serve as a prime vantage point for Mardi Gras festivities. Guests can even witness the whimsical “Greasing of the Poles” tradition right outside. Beyond the street-side energy, the property hides a tranquil, lush courtyard featuring one of the largest heated swimming pools in the French Quarter, providing a quiet retreat from the bustling city.

Inside, the hotel celebrates the local culture through its “Food is Art” philosophy, offering exceptional dining and the intimate Jazz Playhouse for live performances. It also houses a significant collection of original contemporary art, a tradition the Sonesta brand began decades ago to showcase works by nationally and internationally recognized artists.

Its location is perfect for those wanting to explore the city’s soul. You are mere steps away from the historic Jackson Square, the iconic St. Louis Cathedral, and the vibrant stalls of the French Market. Whether you’re hunting for antiques on Royal Street or heading to the riverfront, the hotel puts you at the center of New Orleans’ most celebrated landmarks.

Expert reviews

Fodors review:

“There’s a little something for everyone at this sprawling, resort-like hotel overlooking Bourbon Street. Refined meeting rooms, elegant yet rowdy Bourbon Street-facing balcony suites, a sunny pool deck, and an ultra-fine dining restaurant are just some of the things that attract families, businesspeople, and bachelorettes alike.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in New Orleans.

Frommers review:

“You might forget you’re right on Bourbon Street, what with all the graciousness inside. The Sonesta is large, busy, and classy, with outstanding service for the mix of tourists and business patrons. Rooms, redesigned in late 2016, are handsomely decorated in white and shimmery blue; bathrooms, on the smaller side, are white-on-white.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in New Orleans.

Telegraph review:

“Adding a touch of class to New Orleans’ tackiest thoroughfare is this grande dame of Bourbon Street, which houses a wealth of well-produced, higher-end New Orleans experiences, from fine dining to live jazz.”

As a whole, the state was very nice and would still recommend

Breakfast during booking was misleading, booking stated free breakfast, we booked for four people, but only received breakfast for two people.

The pool was very cold, even though it stated that it was a heated pool used year-round

It was a great stay but the quality of the hotel has has gone down from the first time we stayed there back in 2012

There was an incident outside of our room and woke us up out of our sleep. People are arguing.

I asked for a handicap accessible room, and I did not receive one prior to arriving on the trip

It was fine.

Location was great. Room was comfortable. Hotel was accomodating.

Shower needs work. The water was fine, with warm water first two days, but never got hot. Third day, no hot water. There was noise most of the night for all nights in terms of the sound of like a shower or water was running constantly, or maybe just loud HVAC. Was rarely quiet.

Sadly room did not meet expectations for the dollars spent.

I liked that the room was two levels. I liked the extra security on the elevators and out to the courtyard. The room had plenty of seating. The room was clean for the most part. Bellhop was a nice guy and the valet were all very helpful.

The courtyard was small and had no atmosphere, The refrigerator in the room desperately needed to be defrosted and we could not fit hardly anything in it. Room had no microwave. Furniture had big chips in and should be better maintained. The blinds were all broken and needed to be fixed, but the other rooms off the courtyard also had significant damage to the blinds. We booked for 3 people but there was only enough bedding in the room for the king bed - we tried to call housekeeping/front desk but there was no answer or it would go to a FULL voicemail. We eventually got blankets and sheets but they could not find any additional pillow. So my son had to use a pillow from the couch. The valet was awesome - however you should have the address for the parking access on your booking.com option/website - we had to call to get it after trying several times to get to the hotel address. As all Bourbon St is not accessible to cars it caused an issue.

A central location if you are looking to stay on Bourbon Street.

It is centrally located on bourbon. It was surprisingly quiet in the rooms, even though it was in a very busy location.

Outside of valet, the service was very slow with respect to housekeeping and the restaurants. The restaurant was significantly understaffed. The coffee shop was out of pastries by 8:30 in the morning. It would take over an hour what multiple phone calls for housekeeping to assist you.

Good location, expect to be in the noisy nightlife.

Good location in the French quarter.
Ideal if you want to experience the nightlife.
Hotel usually has blues music acts each evening.

Hotel room facilities seem alittle dated.
Breakfast is expensive.
Staff didn't inform us about the facilities when we first checked in. I.e. which floor swimming pool is on.

Very comfortable. Staff were wonderfully attentive and hepful at all times and Desire Cafe was outs

The room was wonderful but we assume the fact we booked it through a third party resulted in our being placed in a room overlooking roofs of adjoining buildings in overgrown alleys. This occurred with a previous stay at your property and we asked to be moved and that was accommodated; however, we just didn't have the energy for it this second stay. I would not advise anyone booking through another site to do so when staying at the Sonesta NO. We were clearly remiss in not specifically asking for a room with a courtyard or pool view. The room was very convenient to elevators, which was a blessing given one of us has severe leg/hip pain. There was excessive noise one night with the couple in the adjoining room to us having a loud argument with profanity that continued from 10pm to 4am. They were clearly intoxicated and experiencing a domestic dispute that was bordering on violence. Otherwise, the room was quiet, comfortable, kept immaculately clean by housekeeping, and well appointed.

When we left and our car was returned by valet parking we noticed a stain on the windshield, we assumed was due to bird droppings; however, when getting gas later we discovered this stain could not be removed with water, scrubbing, or glass cleaner we brought with us. It became clear it was a deposit from a leaking pipe or concrete that had calcified not only on the windshield but the right rear window. We bought adhesive remover, consulted with an auto service sales desk and while have been able to almost remove this residue stain but it is still visible and a distraction. This did not occur until after we returned the car from a day trip to Grand Isle and our departure date, so it clearly happened afterwards since it was not there on our return. It is possible there is a leaking pipe in the parking deck that caused this damage, which I experienced a work parking deck many years ago and caused thousands of dollars in damage to multiple vehicles of co-workers. When we returned our car, the valet asked if we intended to use our vehicle again and we said no and he told us that in that case he would be putting it in a different location since we would not be using it. We both seem to recall that he said he would be putting in a lower level, if that helps to target a parking area to check for preventing future incidents.

A grand old fashioned hotel right in the centre of Burbon street

Pool area to cool off during hot afternoon. Helpful and friendly staff

The court yard area restrooms could do with being refurbished.
Had a cock roach run across the floor while using the toilets.

On this stay I was just then for one day. Wish I had more time at the hotel. I loved the upgrade that Royal Sonesta has

First is the customer service, which plays a big part from the start. Royal Sonesta try’s very hard to accommodate their guest with their needs.

There was both that I didn’t like.

Had a lovely week and the attractions in around New Orlean were worth it.

The location and the rooms were a good size. However description and picture about covered balcony did not match what was on site.

Overall very good.

The location and staff were great!

Our departure morning we intended to sleep in due to 12 hour drive home however the cleaning staff was slamming the doors so loud and often to other rooms we were unable to sleep. My husband had to get up several times to see what the noise was.

My husband had stayed in this hotel before and he recommended. I must say it was nice and I would stay again when travel

I love that it was right on Bourbon Street!!

Nothing major, they could not get the information correct about our complimentary breakfast and voucher for the $15 I was suppose to receive for 1 day. I was told by 1 clerk, I didnt qualify. Another 1 told me I did. However, it was never rectified, because I still ended up paying out my pocket versus still being able to use my $15 credit.
