Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, Manchester

Oxford Street, Manchester, M60 7HA, United Kingdom. (show on map)

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“The Clocktower Hotel offers contemporary comfort and boutique-hotel chic for history buffs. After a renovation costing more than 25 million pounds, the Clocktower has kept intact the lovely period faience in hallways, and the glass-domed ceiling in the spacious lobby, while converting former clerks’ offices into wood-paneled bedrooms with soaring ceilings and sleek subway-tile bathrooms.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 hours in Manchester.

Telegraph review:

“In an imposing terracotta Victorian building, with ornate original features and one of Manchester’s most popular bars, the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel combines classic good looks with a cool streak. And, despite its grand public areas, it’s warm and welcoming, with thoughtful extras for all guests, from families to dogs.”

What guests liked

All you need to know

With a variety of stunning spaces, Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is particularly aesthetically-pleasing. Nestled in a Victorian-era building dating back to the 1890s, Kimpton Clocktower Hotel has unparalleled craftsmanship, apparent in every room. Guests can enjoy the greenhouse-like lounge with incredibly high, opaque ceilings, bold-tiled flooring, and full-size indoor trees. The hotel restaurant’s crown molding and vintage wooden floors create a space filled with character. Vintage wood paneling in many of the guest rooms adds to this historical hotel’s charm. In the hotel ballroom, you can take in the largest event space in the North of England.

There are many different floor plans to choose from throughout the hotel, but each room comes with tasteful decor, private bathrooms, WiFi, and satellite TVs. Depending on the guest room, you will likely find fun pops of color, different-textured materials, exposed finishes, and incredibly comfortable bedding.

Located on the lively Oxford Road, you will only be a short walk away from abundant attractions, shops, and restaurants. However, the onsite dining does not disappoint. The Refuge Dining Room offers a vibrant space to enjoy an eclectic meal, or check out The Winter Garden for afternoon tea in an elegant environment. You will be within walking distance from several sights during your stay, like the Palace Theater, Bridgewater Hall, Library Theater, Canal Street, and the Manchester Art Gallery.

What an awesome historic building.

What a beautiful building. A real Architectual gem of the Victorian era. Great staff. Having the techno gym bench in the room was great and allowed me to pump some iron before I went to work in the morning :-).

Nothing. Unlike some other reviewers, I don’t believe you can deliberately choose to be in a historic building and then complain that you’re in a historic building, ignoring the obvious compromises in terms of structure and practicality…

Fabulous

Staff were lovely, chatty and helpful at whatever time of day. Room was lovely, really comfortable bed, plenty of space, plugs and covered anything you might need. What was helpful was the sign explaining what else was available, as we needed to borrow a phone charger. We parked in Oxford Street Car park which was at a discounted rate through the hotel, easy walking distance to the hotel and super secure.

Minimal gripes with the room and hotel, to be honest. I'd have put a separate hand soap by the sink as it took a minute to figure out where it was over the bath.

Decor and bedding

Lots of steps, some transit areas, for example walk to the lifts, less than inspiring and slightly mis-matched to shared areas.

Beautiful, grand hotel with cool bar in great location.

This is a very grand, beautiful hotel in a great location. We have stayed here a few times and each time in a different room. This time our room was large with period features. We had a good view of the city and railway. The room was quiet and comfortable. The bathroom was large with a shower over the bath which was great. There were lots of free toiletries and snacks which is a lovely touch. Guests are also invited to a 'meet and greet' session each day for free drinks and snacks.

The room was a little bit cold and it was tricky to control the temperature. The bathroom felt a little exposed because although the large windows did have net curtains when the lights were on there were no blackout blinds.

The staff on reception were welcoming, the bar staff were too, spend a night at The Kimpton and you won’t feel blue!

The building is stunning. Such an icon of Manchester sympathetically transformed into a beautiful and vibrant hotel.

My favourite Manchester Hotel

Amazing decor, great location- we went to the Palace Theatre which was over the road, excellent check in. The Refuse restaurant is fab. Our room was perfect, stylish decor, 2 double beds, lots of treats , turn down with bee chocolate was a bonus ! There was even a yoga mat !

Loved everything about our stay.

Fantastic building sympathetically converted to a hotel, to transport links, restaurants and entertainment

Return visitor

Hotel was great - perfect location for us - only reason for marking down the cleanliness score was that on the corridor to our room there was a used cocktail glass on the window sill for the entire duration of our stay - similar there was a used coffee cup on the walk from reception to the bar for a good many hours - room/reception/bar and restaurant all clean.

A Manchester classic in a competitive market.

Semi-regular visitor here. It's a stylish, impressive hotel in a beautiful building. Reliably pleasant staff, usefully dog-friendly. Good, close parking options. Plenty of fun stuff in walking distance. Restaurant/room service is unexpectedly good.

All good really. You probably don't want the smallest room though.

love this hotel never disappoints such a characterful building staff superb

upgraded to a bigger room because ours wasn't ready and it was very room walk in wet room excellent

we found out after our stay that a friend ordered a gift for the room which we didn't receive may have been because our original room was changed not sure . This was disappointing for them and us

The hotel is very nice and the location was great, as the reason for our stay was theatre, just next door

Even though we stayed on the 4th floor, we could still hear the trains/trams.

Elegant and comfortable

My parents stayed here as a gift for me. They loved the friendly staff and the decor and comfy bed. Also the choice at breakfast and the lunch.

Some noise from the rail line nearby but also my dad enjoyed seeing the trains! Hard to close a window that had been left open.

Loved the building, the cocktails, the staff and there were some nice touches 8/10 overall

Good size room and amenities in the room were good also. The building had a nice vibe in terms of decor and staff were very nice. Free happy hour drinks is a great idea and the location is excellent. Cocktails at the bar were top notch and the check out staff offering water is a nice touch. There is lots to like about this hotel and you have a good formula.

Don’t particularly like being told to make a £50 down payment for hotel spend at check in, I mean what is that about really. Bath very small and breakfast was decent but didn’t deliver on certain aspects. The empty spaces leading to the room (not the corridors) looked a wing of a prison. We enjoyed the stay though and may be back, but honest feedback is important, overall lovely hotel and staff.

Absolutely beautiful as a treat. Thank you for making me feel so welcome.

Magnificent architecture! A stunning place to visit. Comfy rooms, good tea tray and snacks. Firm beds. Baths. Central location.

Rooms noisy - not from outside but the doors to the 2 rooms adjoining mine had zero sound insulation. They looked lovely and authentic but I could hear every word, cough and f@rt from next door on both sides. It was unnerving.

Perfect place to stay in Manchester

The staff were exceptional, friendly and helpful. The building is beautiful, I only wish our stay had been longer to give us time to explore it. The rooms were lovely, bed was comfortable with proper pillows. The breakfast was superb with plenty of choice. The hotel doesnt have parking but the NCP is 2 minutes walk away and can be paid for at the hotel on check out so really easy. We loved the hotel and will definitely stay here again when we visit Manchester.

Loved everything about it.

Loved it!

It was all great. We really enjoyed out stay. The complementary drinks on arrival was a huge perk. I did have to wait quite a long time for my gf toast in the morning. However, generally it was a great stay and we would stay there again.

No gf sausages. Had to wait a while for gf toast.

Exceptional

The staff were so welcoming and accommodating. We arrived earlier than check in looking to drop our bags off but they checked and a room was available so they let us check in early which was amazing. Milk was provided within the fridge in the room; we went down to reception to enquire whether they had any milk alternatives and the gentleman at reception came up to the room and hand delivered some a short while later. Going above and beyond. Would highly recommend and will be booking to stay here again in future!

Luxurious, perfect location for food, transport and theatre in the city. I would love to stay again

Breakfast fabulous, good attentive and cheerful service, liked the animal friendly aspect for other guests (we did not bring an animal ourselves) Bed was enormous and super nights sleep, large room, black out curtains good. Great hot shower. Architecture fabulous

Had to hunt for cups initially but they were in the wardrobe. maybe a note to say where they are next to the coffee machine? Otherwise very little to complain about!
