Wombat’s CITY Hostel, London
Wombat’s City Hostel is a fascinating blend of history and modern hospitality. Located in the Tower Hamlets district, the building originally served as a mission for seamen in the 1860s, offering a safe haven for merchant sailors docked in London. Today, it has been beautifully restored into a top-rated hostel, preserving its historic Victorian brickwork while adding stylish, contemporary comforts.
The design, led by Mulroy Architects, masterfully marries the building’s past with an “upmarket backpacker” aesthetic. You’ll find unique touches like exposed Victorian columns, restored brick vaults in the common areas, and a legendary bar counter crafted from 500-year-old reclaimed oak. The decor is intentionally creative, featuring patterned fabrics inspired by London’s iconic Tube seating to give it a distinctly local feel without relying on tired tourist cliches.
Beyond the architecture, the hostel is designed as a social hub. Its WomBAR and WomCAFÉ are popular spots for travelers to connect, often hosting events like free concerts and pub quizzes. For those seeking a bit of solitude, the private rooms and dorms are high-quality, and some upper-floor spaces even boast views of the city skyline.
Its location is unbeatable for sightseeing. You are just a short walk from the iconic Tower Bridge and the historic Tower of London. If you want to explore further, the vibrant markets of Spitalfields and the artistic energy of Shoreditch and Brick Lane are practically on your doorstep, making it a perfect base for your London adventure.

It was very nice!
The breakfast, my check in:), the location, the atmosphere
The stay was generally fine, but there were a few issues.
The 7 AM false fire alarm was handled poorly and no compensation was offered.
Additionally, l asked reception to store my ice cream in the freezer, but it was placed in the fridge and melted.
Small things, but they affected the overall experience.

Great starting point for historical walk of London.
vVery clean clean and ensuite which has a window. Bed very comfortable. Breakfast a bit expensive but so is everything in London. Storage locker is 4 pounds for 8 hrs. But too bad.
It's bit bit far to walk to city centre. But it's z good starting point gor good historical walk of London such as thd Yoman wall and All Hallows church near Tower Hill tube station which I never noticed. Borrowed book from hostels on historical walks.

Very safe and comfortable, solid for the price. Not my favorite location personally.
Room was cleaned daily, bed was comfortable, and there was privacy curtains on each bed. Very safe clean place to stay, and solid price. Loved the hostel cafe open daily with coffee.
It was not my favorite location in London, as it was only really close to the Tower of London, and less close to Soho where I spent more of my time as a tourist. Of course, London is huge so I'd recommend researching neighborhoods and activities before searching for hostels. I spent a lot of nights out late especially, so it would have been better to not have to take the night bus to get back to my hostel.

Great hostel for solo travellers!
I stayed in a 6-bed Women only room and I couldn't have wished for a better stay. The room was quite spacious so you could you leave your big luggage out without annoying your roomies. The bathroom was also very modern and clean. I was taking a nap and one of the cleaning ladies came in and I could hear her thoroughly cleaning everything and spraying air freshener so I was definitely pleased by that.
The breakfast was in all honesty not worth the price but that's a personal preference. It was very basic and not my cup of tea so for the same price I could order something somewhere else.
My room was at the end of a hallway next to the street and sometimes there was a bit of noise pollution from outside with people talking or garbage trucks passing by, however the windows were also open at all times so maybe it would've been better with them closed and I also didn't use earplugs so I can't give a full review on that.

Really nice place great vibe will visit again
Nice location but a few scrambled eggs wouldn't go amiss
I suppose as a solo female sharing a room full of men was a bit daunting. But they were thankfully very respectful.

Alot to see, too little time.
Wombat's by every measure is superior to every other hostel I've stayed at in London. Booked a double room with bathroom that was situated on the third floor at the rear of the building. Even thought we were there over the record breaking heat wave in May the room was cool using only a fan, the court yard below is closed at 10:00pm so the room was also quiet in the evening. The building and rooms are very well kept. Wombat's felt very secure with someone at reception 24/7, the area is well traveled, a 10 minute walk brings you to the Tower Hill Underground stop (District, Circle & DLR). Nice bar/pub in the basement, though we missed some of the scheduled events offered in the evening. Kitchen well maintained. Can't comment on the laundry as we had no need for it.
Personally didn't find £8.50 for the breakfast to be a good value but there is a Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local, Buy Foods Supermarket and La Dolce Vita Cafe all within a few minutes walk. The mattress was a little softer than I prefer.

A decent place to sleep with good shared facilities
We had a dorm for a group of 8.
Lockers in the room were good, and the beds were decent.
Good location, not a bad price for central London.
Nice shared facilities and bar downstairs.
Decent brekkie.
It was very hot during our stay and some of the fans didn’t work, and no aircon.
(Small) extra charge for towels.
No places to sit in the room.

Greast hostel for solo travellers.
One of the best hostels I’ve stayed at. The rooms are good overall (great value for money), and the beds with curtains add a bit of much-needed privacy. The bathrooms were always clean.
There were also always plenty of activities going on at the hostel bar (located on floor -1) until around 1:30 am. The location of the bar was actually perfect: it created a great social atmosphere, while the noise never really reached the rooms, so you could still rest peacefully.
The location wasn’t ideal, since the hostel is located in the City of London (near Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, etc.), which makes it a bit far from Westminster, Piccadilly, Soho, and other central areas. Still, there are plenty of public transport options within walking distance.

Lovely place to stay and meet people
The location
Go on a second level bed could be hard with those tiny metal ladders.
One of my roommates was so noisy with a hair dryer at 6 in the morning. Hostel should be controlling a bit more how to respect others.

Good one night stay
The rooms were comfortable with a lot of storage. Great showers which was surprising for a hostel. Good location near public transport. Handy that there was a café on site and other facilities were great.
One of the staff members really could not be bothered. He told everyone the incorrect information and gave one worded responses when we tried to ask for help. Luckily his colleagues made up for his lousy attitude. You had to make your bedsheets.

A perfect mix of great location, social atmosphere, and genuinely helpful staff, easily one of the best hostel experienc
Had the best time in London this hostel is literally 10/10. It’s close to two stations on great lines, and you can even walk to Tower Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral.
The staff were outstanding: very welcoming, efficient, and helpful. I had a problem with my bed locker and key card, and they solved it instantly.
If you rent a towel, you can get a fresh one whenever you want, which was great. The bar is super nice too, and they had a few events that were worth checking out even if that’s not usually your vibe.
The rooms are spacious with plenty of room, and the cleaners come by often. I also really liked that you can choose your bed depending on the available spots in the room.
I didn’t use the kitchen, but it’s nice to have one available as well.
