Wombat’s CITY Hostel, London

7 Dock Street, Tower Hamlets, London, E1 8LL, United Kingdom (show on map)

Wombat’s City Hostel is a fascinating blend of history and modern hospitality. Located in the Tower Hamlets district, the building originally served as a mission for seamen in the 1860s, offering a safe haven for merchant sailors docked in London. Today, it has been beautifully restored into a top-rated hostel, preserving its historic Victorian brickwork while adding stylish, contemporary comforts.

The design, led by Mulroy Architects, masterfully marries the building’s past with an “upmarket backpacker” aesthetic. You’ll find unique touches like exposed Victorian columns, restored brick vaults in the common areas, and a legendary bar counter crafted from 500-year-old reclaimed oak. The decor is intentionally creative, featuring patterned fabrics inspired by London’s iconic Tube seating to give it a distinctly local feel without relying on tired tourist cliches.

Beyond the architecture, the hostel is designed as a social hub. Its WomBAR and WomCAFÉ are popular spots for travelers to connect, often hosting events like free concerts and pub quizzes. For those seeking a bit of solitude, the private rooms and dorms are high-quality, and some upper-floor spaces even boast views of the city skyline.

Its location is unbeatable for sightseeing. You are just a short walk from the iconic Tower Bridge and the historic Tower of London. If you want to explore further, the vibrant markets of Spitalfields and the artistic energy of Shoreditch and Brick Lane are practically on your doorstep, making it a perfect base for your London adventure.

Very good

Cheap and cheerful, clean, and friendly

While I understand it's an hostal, the mattresses on the beds are not good for someone on the large size, needs more support and the coffee in the cafe, while good is at Costa prices a concession for guests would be good

Alot to see, too little time.

Wombat's by every measure is superior to every other hostel I've stayed at in London. Booked a double room with bathroom that was situated on the third floor at the rear of the building. Even thought we were there over the record breaking heat wave in May the room was cool using only a fan, the court yard below is closed at 10:00pm so the room was also quiet in the evening. The building and rooms are very well kept. Wombat's felt very secure with someone at reception 24/7, the area is well traveled, a 10 minute walk brings you to the Tower Hill Underground stop (District, Circle & DLR). Nice bar/pub in the basement, though we missed some of the scheduled events offered in the evening. Kitchen well maintained. Can't comment on the laundry as we had no need for it.

Personally didn't find £8.50 for the breakfast to be a good value but there is a Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local, Buy Foods Supermarket and La Dolce Vita Cafe all within a few minutes walk. The mattress was a little softer than I prefer.

Nice stay

Very helpful staff. 6 bed dorm was spacious. Shower and the toilet are separated, which is practical. Two plugs by the bed made things really easy. Fans in each pod were love.

Fans were loud :| My first room was a regular one, which was super loud because of the train tracks, like literally every 2 minutes a train. Then the lovely staff moved me to the quiet dorm, which was in the end also loud due to some ventilation system outside.

Very good

Nice hostel and good bunks. My dorm had an AC which was a lifesaver in a heatwave. Safe to keep your stuff next to your bed.

Dorm toilet did not have soap to wash your hands with nor anything to dry your hands. Dorm toilet was smelly. Communal spaces were SUPER hot. No ac.

A decent place to sleep with good shared facilities

We had a dorm for a group of 8. Lockers in the room were good, and the beds were decent. Good location, not a bad price for central London. Nice shared facilities and bar downstairs. Decent brekkie.

It was very hot during our stay and some of the fans didn’t work, and no aircon. (Small) extra charge for towels. No places to sit in the room.

Greast hostel for solo travellers.

One of the best hostels I’ve stayed at. The rooms are good overall (great value for money), and the beds with curtains add a bit of much-needed privacy. The bathrooms were always clean. There were also always plenty of activities going on at the hostel bar (located on floor -1) until around 1:30 am. The location of the bar was actually perfect: it created a great social atmosphere, while the noise never really reached the rooms, so you could still rest peacefully.

The location wasn’t ideal, since the hostel is located in the City of London (near Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, etc.), which makes it a bit far from Westminster, Piccadilly, Soho, and other central areas. Still, there are plenty of public transport options within walking distance.

Fabulous

The rooms were very clean and housekeeping did an excellent job. Rooms were self sufficient with bunk beds and lockers.

Bathrooms do not have exhaust fans and you need to give some time for the odors to disperse after use.

Reliable hostel

I’ve stayed here quite a few times and this visit the desk staff were friendlier and there had been clear updates to upgrade things. The lift had also been fixed and was less freaky. The rooms were as usual had lots of privacy, easy to use lockers and very clean.

If you’re on the 6th floor and rely on a lift, it can take more than 10 minutes for it to reach the floor during busy periods. It doesn’t automatically go all the way up. As I couldn’t take the stairs, it was a bit frustrating waiting that long.

Lovely place to stay and meet people

The location

Go on a second level bed could be hard with those tiny metal ladders. One of my roommates was so noisy with a hair dryer at 6 in the morning. Hostel should be controlling a bit more how to respect others.

Good one night stay

The rooms were comfortable with a lot of storage. Great showers which was surprising for a hostel. Good location near public transport. Handy that there was a café on site and other facilities were great.

One of the staff members really could not be bothered. He told everyone the incorrect information and gave one worded responses when we tried to ask for help. Luckily his colleagues made up for his lousy attitude. You had to make your bedsheets.

A perfect mix of great location, social atmosphere, and genuinely helpful staff, easily one of the best hostel experienc

Had the best time in London this hostel is literally 10/10. It’s close to two stations on great lines, and you can even walk to Tower Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral. The staff were outstanding: very welcoming, efficient, and helpful. I had a problem with my bed locker and key card, and they solved it instantly. If you rent a towel, you can get a fresh one whenever you want, which was great. The bar is super nice too, and they had a few events that were worth checking out even if that’s not usually your vibe. The rooms are spacious with plenty of room, and the cleaners come by often. I also really liked that you can choose your bed depending on the available spots in the room. I didn’t use the kitchen, but it’s nice to have one available as well.

Very good

staff were very friendly and helpful, there were hairdryers for rent as well as a laundry and luggage storage. luggage and laundry are paid, but the luggage lock felt very safe and secure and i had good peace of mind. room and lockers inside the room are all accessed with one card, so it was very convenient!

the room was loud since it was quite close to the train tracks. i didnt manage to sleep through all that well but at least i got to start my day a bit earlier. i also wish there was a table or more chairs or something in the room for convenience

Would come back

- following hygiene guidelines, metal beds, sealed mattresses, white sheets that you have to put yourself, I was not worried about bed bugs - USB charging port - lockers, no need to bring your own lock - comfortable beds, great kitchen and garden with table, pub downstairs

- you have to pay extra if you want a towel - uncomfortable to carry your bedsheets to reception upon departure - female only rooms are more expensive

Pleasant stay

The hostel itself is clean, modern, and well-maintained. The rooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable, with secure lockers available for storing personal belongings. One of the highlights of my stay was the shared kitchen, which is really wonderful. It’s spacious, well-equipped, and kept very clean, making it easy to cook your own meals and save money. It also creates a nice opportunity to interact with other guests in a relaxed environment. Another great feature is the common area and bar downstairs, which is perfect for meeting fellow travelers. The atmosphere is social but not overwhelming. The staff were friendly and helpful, always willing to give recommendations or assist with any questions.

I was a bit disappointed with the breakfast. Considering the price of £8.50, I expected a wider variety of options, including items like croissants or other fresh pastries. While it was decent, it didn’t quite match the value for money.
