The Zetter Townhouse Clerkenwell, London

49-50 St John's Square, Islington, London, EC1V 4JJ, United Kingdom (show on map)

The Zetter Townhouse Clerkenwell is a masterclass in eccentric British charm. Located on a historic, cobbled square, this boutique hotel occupies a pair of Georgian townhouses that feel less like a hotel and more like the private home of an imaginative, well-travelled relative. Opened in 2011, it was designed by Russell Sage, who famously rejected modern minimalism in favor of “curated clutter,” filling the space with antiques, curiosities, and Victorian-inspired maximalism.

The design is built around the fictional backstory of “Great Aunt Wilhelmina,” a colorful character whose personality is reflected in the hotel’s quirky decor, taxidermy, and hidden trinkets tucked into drawers and wardrobes. Guests are encouraged to explore the building’s nooks and crannies, where every corner offers a new story or visual surprise.

Beyond the rooms, the property is celebrated for its intimate “Parlour.” This cocktail lounge has long been a destination for locals and travelers alike, known for serving award-winning, expertly curated drinks in a cozy, atmospheric setting that feels like a trip back to a bygone era.

Its location in Clerkenwell places you in one of London’s most creative hubs. You are within easy reach of fascinating landmarks like the Museum of the Order of St John and the ancient St Bartholomew the Great church. For those who enjoy a bit of local flavor, the vibrant Exmouth Market and the historic Smithfield Market are just a short walk away, offering a perfect blend of culture, history, and city life.

Expert reviews

CN Traveler review:

“The maximalist Zetter Townhouse taps a rich vein of Victorian eccentricity to create an urban den with genuine warmth—a theme hotel without the cheese. It’s a lovely, under-the-radar hotel that’s for real London lovers.”

disappointed

no air con! 30degree heat. Horrible little fans that replaced. The hotel didn't notify us before arrival or on arrival. What was supposed to be a relaxing evening in our room was like 12hrs in a sauna. The windows only opened 10cm as well. An awful night and very disappointed. Food was way overpriced. £50 for a 1 drink, a sandwich and chips.

Lovely hotel but left with a bitter taste in my mouth

Beautiful hotel and bar area. Lovely room.

Unfortunately I arrived to check in and there was no record of my booking. Apparently booking.com and zetters system hadn't synced up. Luckily they still had a room so I had to cancel on booking.com and then rebook directly with the hotel and pay again. I was assured I would be refunded the initial payment within 5 working days. They very kindly upgraded us to a larger room and comped breakfast. Unfortunately after 5 days I still hadn't received my refund. After chasing the hotel many many times and having to explain the situation repeatedly to each staff member I was told to call booking.com to see what was going on. I spoke to booking.com who informed me the hotel hadn't responded to their email confirming the cancellation. It finally got sorted but my refund was very late and I had to chase a lot to get it sorted. Not what you want or expect when spending a hefty amount of a hotel room for a special birthday celebration. Unfortunately left with a bitter taste in my mouth. Ho hum.

Overall enjoyed our stay and liked the rustic feel.

Nice rustic feel. Well located. Had nice room overlooking the square. Got bigger room for the second stay which would have been nice for the first one.

Varying quality of staff which made it important that you spoke to the right person. Seemed to be lots of staff rotating through the day and as a result the one hand didn’t know what the other was doing.

Poor nights sleep due to uncomfortable bed, loud street and clicking AC

Location was good Free overnight parking behind it

Single glazing - so it was very loud AC was clicked when on so added to the noise Uncomfortable bed Uncomfortable pillows Staff weren’t rude but also weren’t particularly helpful and gave no information about the hotel.

Good but a little style over substance.

Lots of style. Great location. Friendly staff

It’s a little tried. Some plug sockets didn’t work for example. Small room for the price.

Pleasant but far too expensive for what it is - a small fancy room in a convenient location

The location and the room was very clean

The room and bathroom are both very small. Whilst it was comfortable it is just not worth the money - you are paying for its ‘olde English’ feel but it’s not worth all that extra cost just for colourful wallpaper and old paintings. It is also covered in scaffolding - perhaps they could have offered a discount whilst all that work is going on?

Lovely stay in a beautiful building

Beautiful characterful building, cosy bar area, unique decor.

We stayed here for two nights including our wedding night. We did let the hotel know in advance and they were accommodating but there were no additional touches to make our stay more special, and staff weren’t aware until we informed them. We felt it would have been helpful to have an experienced member of staff in the reception area too.

Otherwise great stay, friendly staff and wonderful location - we love the neighborhood

Nice property though we learned on the spot that now the Zetter is only the townhouse (the other building is being renovated and rebranded)

I did not like that housekeeping is on demand. It’s a hotel not an airbnb

For a boutique hotel which is charging boutique prices - it doesn’t live up to expectations. Poor value for money.

The cosy breakfast room turn bar at night.

1. No one was was available for me to check in. I had to ask the staff to be attended and wait for to be checked in. 2. I was asked whether I wanted the room to be cleaned. Said yes but no one came. 3. A card in the room said to ask for milk or milk alternative to make coffee or tea. I went down to ask for and none was available. Thankfully though a staff found some and delivered. Surprising that this wasn’t available at first instance. 4. the safe was not working and needed new batteries. I had to call to get it fixed. I didn’t want to be disturbed so decided not to use it/told technician to do it after o checked out. 5. I asked to deposit my bag after checking out. When I asked for a receipt or acknowledgment I was told I couldn’t get one. Also that if things were lost it was my responsibility as I had already checked out. Later when I came to collect my belongings I was asked by someone else for a receipt or a ticket. Doesn’t make sense to me.

Quirky boutique hotel, super comfortable beds, small rooms but in historic house in great area

One of the nicest breakfast buffets for a small hotel but not included with price of our room. Decor is over the top fun filled w antiques and interesting fabrics. Bar area is lively and cozy. Beds are very comfortable and room was cleaned beautifully.

Not really organized front desk. Seemed like a young, lightly trained staff. But all were very nice. The rooms are tight which is common in London. Not a lot of food options in hotel if you arrive late or on weekend. It's just a quirky small boutique experience so don't expect services you'd get elsewhere. We stayed 5 nights and it grew on us.

I hope to return to this hotel. Right vibe for us. Great location, nice people. Little, quirky gem.

Unique decor and vibe, and hospitable, helpful staff. Location worked well.

Slightly weird to have no dedicated hotel desk on ground floor. It’s an eating and drinking establishment with a hotel upstairs. You sometimes have to hunt for hotel support.

Pleasant

Old-fashioned decor of the property. Good bathroom and nice bathroom products.

There was no lounge area specifically for hotel guests. The bar is advertised quite separately to the hotel, to bring in outside patrons, with seating in all the downstairs area able to be reserved by people who just want bar service. There was live music on two nights we stayed. It would be good to have a quiet area where you could sit and relax after a day in town and The Zetter doesn't provide this. The armchair in our room needed respringing - you honestly couldn't sit in it. Breakfast was expensive.

The staff were friendly and helpful and the bed was comfortable, I will probably book here again.

This is a quirky hotel with a lot of character. It is in a relatively quiet location in central London.

Because it is almost primarily a cocktail bar and café, as a hotel guest, you are not always given priority when being seated etc. and there is no lounge or other space exclusively for hotel guests.

Extremely bad service

The location was great for my sons wedding, we had three rooms

All three of our rooms were not serviced on the Saturday. We had breakfast in our room and left do not disturb on the doors whilst we got ready for the wedding, we left at 12.50am, removing all 3 do not disturbs. When we got back in the early hours of the morning, none of the rooms had been serviced. I rang downstairs and was told u have to put a card outside to say you want it done, what card?? Back to our 3 rooms with not drinking water, wet towels from Friday night and Saturday morning!! When checking out on the Saturday I was told cost of breakfast would be removed! Ok but I’d rather have had the rooms serviced than a free breakfast. I asked why they hadn’t done and she said you have to put a card out saying you want it done in case they forget to do it but she forgot to tell us. Unbelievable,

Location, Comfort and Charm

I booked the deluxe double room for a three night holiday at the Zetter Clerkenwell. The charming room was located on the top floor with a nice view through two large windows. The property is set back from the busy street and I was able to sleep with the windows open undisturbed. I enjoyed the fresh coffee and French press the hotel provided. The bathroom had plenty of nice linens and toiletries. The bed and bedding were very comfortable. There is a wardrobe where you can hang and place your clothes. The wifi was good. You do have to walk through the very busy pub in the evening to get back and forth to your room but not an issue. The property is located a short walk from Farringdon transit, which I used several times along with the bus service on Clerkenwell Road. I also walked to Covent Garden (about twenty five minutes). I felt rested and was comfortable during my stay and I love the Clerkenwell location. I will stay at the Zetter Clerkenwell again.

I loved everything about the property.

Nice place, shame about the guest experience. I wouldn’t return.

The location of the Zetter is great. It’s a quirky hotel that fits its environment perfectly.

The hotel was exceptionally unhelpful about a booking error. They gave conflicting information and were rude with a clear message that maximising spend was more important than a happy guest. Felt like dealing with a shabby market trader.

Very good

Quirky decor and good location

Cocktail bar stopped serving cocktails at 11pm but would serve wine, beer or spirits yet a lot of their marketing is focused on their cocktails. We were disappointed as were looking forward to an Espresso Martini in their lovely lounge bar.

Fabulous. We will be back.

Super location and absolutely lovely place to stay. We were sorry we only had the one night. Loved how much character it had, so much nicer than other city hotels.we loved the shower.

Sadly we stayed on the Monday and couldn't sample the cocktail bar.

Over charged and the food and drinks stopped at 11 o’clock

The view from the bedroom window

I was over charged on every transaction compared to prices in the menu. There was no mini bar or Coffee cups or ironing facilities, although the booking confirmation listed it.
