Hotel Number Sixteen, London
Hotel Number Sixteen is a beautifully converted mid-Victorian townhouse located in the heart of South Kensington. Part of the Firmdale Hotels group, the property is a masterclass in interior design by the legendary Kit Kemp. She has filled the space with an eclectic, joyful mix of bold patterns, whimsical antiques, and vibrant contemporary art, making it feel more like an elegant private home than a traditional hotel.
The building’s signature feature is its hidden, leafy English garden. Whether you are enjoying breakfast among the mulberry trees or sipping an evening cocktail in the tranquil conservatory—known as The Orangery—it provides a peaceful sanctuary away from the city’s hustle. Each of the 41 rooms is individually styled, blending modern luxury with classic comfort and playful, imaginative touches.
For culture lovers, the location is unbeatable. You are just a short stroll away from London’s “Museum Quarter,” including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Science Museum. If you fancy a bit of luxury shopping, the high-end boutiques of Knightsbridge and the iconic Harrods department store are also within easy reach.
After exploring the nearby Royal Albert Hall or taking a wander through the expansive greenery of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, the hotel offers a perfect landing spot. Its combination of historic white stucco architecture and fresh, creative design makes it a truly unique gem for anyone visiting London.
Expert reviews
“The Firmdale Hotels group mostly operates boldfaced-name hotels in the West End—the kinds of places where scenesters swill designer gin and fashion magazines shoot. Here, though, husband/wife designers/owners Tim and Kit Kemp create one of the loveliest B&B experiences in the city.”
Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in London.
“A reflection of the well-heeled neighborhood it calls home, the beautiful Number 16 hotel is a charming Victorian stucco terrace townhouse a few minutes from South Kensington Tube.”
Featured as Fodor’s Choice in London.
“Every room in this townhouse hotel is bursting with colour and effervescent charm, thanks to splashy Chelsea textiles and characterful artwork hand-picked by design director Kit Kemp. It’s close to Kensington’s major museums, high-end shops and restaurants. The afternoon tea, at £22 per person, offers great value.”

Excellent service, beautiful surroundings, and wonderful breakfast. Just a terrific hotel and lovely experience. Cannot
The decor was beautiful and very unique. The location in Kensington was terrific, very near a tube station and a short walk to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

I would rather have one night’s stay here than two nights in a lesser hotel. A delightful stay.
Stylish and efficient. Splendid Reception staff and service, very helpful and permitted drop off of luggage in the morning. Exciting and inspiring decor.
the hotel might like to consider groups of staff gathering and talking/ joking in the lounge where the drinks are made. It conveys the impression of over staffing and poor professionalism.

Exceptional care taken to provide every comfort
Everything was perfect

A little disappointing.
It's beautifully decorated and the bed is really comfortable. Excellent location.
Sadly for this price point the service was lacking. Most hotels would change out dirty glasses every day. Also the restaurant was seriously over priced.

A real gem of a deluxe hotel providing calm and a really good night's sleep, beautifully designed.
Outstanding hotel in every way. Cosy, incredibly clean, quiet and so pretty.
Nothing.

An Oasis of charm in South Kensington
It is a charming hotel dressed in the designer’s signature colorful and quirky palette that creates a cheery environment. Breakfast is delicious, the location is wonderful, and the garden is a peaceful oasis.
The tub/ shower combo was a little slippery and hazardous for us seniors.

Expensive, small room and service needs to be more engaging. More out going. Happy. More inviting.
The garden
No counter space. Really sucks. Make up on the floor.

Some building work going on which was bit noisy but cannot be helped I’m sure. Did not spoil our stay

Favourite hotel to stay in London. Stylish, comfortable, quiet luxury in the best location.
The room decor and comfort, the staff, the breakfast and location - all perfect.
Number Sixteen is a wonderfully discrete hotel in a central location, 2 minutes walk from the tube but on a quiet street with all amenities needed, close by. The staff were superlative and the room was fantastic. We really appreciated Kit Kemp's classic styling with the most comfortable of beds, and an airy and bright room on the ground floor without a sound from the street outside.
The garden at the rear is stunning and the most beautiful refuge from the busyness of London. Breakfast was topnotch and a joy sitting watching the carp splash about in the water feature.
We'll be back!
Nothing at all. But if we were to have to say something, the bath was a little slippery!

A Nice Compact Boutique Hotel
It’s a nice hotel in an excellent location near the Museums (V&A, Natural History), Albert Hall, Kensington House, etc. it’s on the Circle/District/Piccadilly lines with good connection to Heathrow/Central London and even Wimbledon.
It has really nice staff who went the extra mile and was nice and quiet. The staff were on hand and made us tea when we wanted it. The bar is a honesty bar.
The lounges had nice sofas.
They did supply a gluten free (coeliac) breakfast.
The rooms sizes are adequate and very nicely furnished but not massive. It is London and it is much better than many I’ve stayed in so I was happy.
If you have mobility issues do tell them. We had a beautiful marble bathroom with double sink but it was down 2 quite steep steps. I could envisage it being an issue for people my parents age. I’m 60’s and it was fine for me but a surprise. They said they try not to give these to people who have mobility issues.

I would definitely stay here again! Wonderful staff.
Great location, clean, little extras were so nice, staff great, beautifully decorated. Comfortable bed. Offered airport pickup too which was a plus.
Room was a little small. I’d upgrade to a bigger room.

Sophisticated, elegant, and delightfully comfortable.
This is my fourth stay at this hotel and each time it has been a true pleasure. The location is perfect, the facilities are delightful - it's like being enveloped in supreme comfort with a smart eye on design. Fabulous!

Very nice hotel! Recommended 100%.
The hotel is very cosy, clean, located in calm street. Very tasty breakfast. Helpful staff.
Very convenient location if come as a tourist as main museums are just few minutes walk away, and nearby busses bring you straight to the center if you go for sightseeing in the central London.

Excellent hotel in an excellent location.
Excellent shower, big choice for breakfast and a few minutes walk from South Kensington tube station with a direct line to Kings Cross, Picadilly Circus and Embankment. Also a few minutes walk to the V & A museum and natural history museum. There was a little gift for me in my room.

Our stay was wonderful! Excellent service and location!
Inclusive breakfast was great.
The entire staff was accommodating and wonderful.
The computer system was down, so we did not know what we owed. The front desk person was not as attentive or helpful as the rest of the staff.

Lovely boutique hotel
Fabulous decor and ambience
Checkout wasn't Firmdales' usual high standard. Took about 10 minutes as they have to refund any extras money not used in person.

Beautifully quaint hotel. Excellent breakfast and sweetly decorated furnishings. Great location.
I booked the hotel knowing my family would need 24 hour room service and it was listed as an amenity. There was NOT room service available when we needed it ( late night check in and early morning departure). Also the front desk staff was very nice but not very helpful with concierge requests for dinner bookings.
