Great Northern Hotel, London

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“With an air of history and quick access to the Underground, this stylish hotel provides a great base for exploring London. The theme of rail travel is present in the hotel’s stylish décor: ‘Do not disturb’ signs bear antique illustrations of railway signals, and ‘Couchette’ rooms, with built-in beds, take their design cues from sleeper cars.”

Telegraph review:

“The slick regeneration of King’s Cross is encapsulated in the beautifully refurbished Great Northern Hotel. Juxtaposed between the clean lines of the station’s contemporary architecture and the grande dame grandeur of the Renaissance Hotel, the Grade II-listed building serves to fuse the two with understated elegance.”

Great location and luxury decor but was expecting more.

Upon arrival we were informed our suite had been upgraded, which was a lovely surprise and the staff were very welcoming. The decor in the hotel was beautiful, particularly in the bar and restaurant. The history of the hotel was partly why we booked it. We had access to a pantry with some cakes and hot drink making facilities, which was a nice touch. The views from our floor and our room were wonderful and the location was very central. The room itself was comfortable, with a good mattress and the addition of bathrobes and slippers. The small decorative touches in the room were in keeping with the overall aesthetic of the hotel. ordered room service during our stay which was efficient.

There was a slight wait for the room although we did inform the hotel of the time we would be checking in. Others have mentioned the lack of tea making facilities in the room and the size of the room was a little on the small size for what I was expecting and the price. The water pressure in the room wasn't great but we were on the top floor. The breakfast was nice but felt overpriced (£70 for two without cereal) though some of the price may be due to the surroundings which were beautiful. Unfortunately the stay was impacted by a particularly unfortunate interaction with a staff member when returning to the hotel in the evening after an event we attended. He was leaving the hotel as I was scanning my card to enter and blocked the door, not allowing us entry and questioned me, wanting to see proof we were staying at the hotel. Even though I showed him my room card he said he wouldn't hold the door for me and closed it on me. I pointed out that I would've let myself in if he hadn't been coming out at that moment. I wonder if my appearance had been different if he would have held the door for me. I've never had this type of interaction at any other hotel I've stayed, luxury or otherwise so it was upsetting. Needless to say we didn't have breakfast in the hotel the following morning. The staff during the rest of the stay were perfectly friendly so this was a sad end to an otherwise nice two night stay.

Conforatable and luxurious

A comfy room, curteous service and perfect location for headsing to Europe. The breakfast takeaway pack on the last day was excellent and gave me a great early start.

Cereal selection was poor for breakfast - on the second day there were no cornflakes and I was releagted to Bran Flakes. Cereal & Juice is also by waiter service, whereas my preference for these item is buffet selection.

Great location for 1 night stay for access to St Pancras, not great if stay is longer

The extra touches, slippers and dressing gown

Room so small, no tea making facilities in room, pillows far too soft. Trying hard to maximise space but made of feel far less luxurious. Surprised at star rating

Rooms are a bit small but all in all good hotel

Good vibe, nicely fitted out, clean deco look, good service, good breakfast and extra kitchen to get basics yourself e.g. coffee

The basic room is very small, although nicely completed there's not much space for 2 people

Very comfortable with a few areas lacking.

Very clean. Very efficiently run. The room was clean and bed was comfortable.

Like nearly all hotels we’ve stayed in there was a lack of table area so one suitcase stayed on floor. Also bathroom although extremely nice had no areas to put your own spongebags and toiletries. Also clean clothes after your shower had to be dropped on the floor as there was nowhere to store them actually in the bathroom.

Classy boutique hotel with great design

Nice little touches in the bedroom - good bedside lighting. Fluffy towels and good robes. Water provided

Coffee machine but no tea making options. Reception is tight and reception staff a bit clueless. Need to be sharper and less ‘vacant’ .

Perfect spot for unexpected overnight stay in KX!

Perfect location - comfortable, well appointed rooms, even the smallest ones. Bottles of water in the room and replenished daily.

No tea or kettle in the rooms, just a coffee machine and coffee - I don’t drink coffee!

Fit for purpose but expensive stay - selected for proximity to St. Pancras International Station.

location excellent for taking an early Eurostar to France The 'Pantry' on each corridor was a Plus with a coffee machine, chocolate brownies and fruit available foc.

Bathroom was cold - the electric towel heater was not on and I could not find any way to put it on. The heating system was very noisy. The room was tiny but adequate for the purpose. I would have liked to use the Nespresso machine in the cupboard in my room but I could not make it work and there were no instructions.
