voco Grand Central, Glasgow
The voco Grand Central is an iconic fixture in Glasgow’s cityscape. First opened in 1883, the building was designed by the celebrated Scottish architect Sir Rowand Anderson, who also crafted the National Portrait Gallery. Attached directly to the bustling Glasgow Central Station, the hotel has long served as a gateway to the city, standing tall through two World Wars and witnessing over a century of social history.
The hotel’s past is nothing short of legendary. It has hosted royalty, political icons like Winston Churchill and JFK, and even The Beatles. A particularly fascinating historical footnote is that in 1927, the world’s first long-distance television transmission was conducted from its fourth floor by John Logie Baird. Today, you can even explore a “Wall of Fame” within the hotel featuring portraits of these famous former guests.
Inside, the property masterfully balances Victorian grandeur with modern comfort. High ceilings and intricate wood paneling remain, yet the rooms have been updated with contemporary boutique flair. A standout feature is the Champagne Central bar, which overlooks the station’s main concourse—it’s a perfect spot to watch the world go by.
Location-wise, you couldn’t be more central. You are steps away from the “Style Mile” for shopping and a short walk from George Square’s historic monuments. With the subway nearby, it’s also an incredibly easy base for reaching the OVO Hydro or the vibrant West End, making it an excellent starting point for exploring everything Glasgow has to offer.
Expert reviews
“One of Europe’s great Victorian hotels built when train travel was a luxury, this hotel located within Glasgow’s historic train station deserves its name, as everything about it, from the magnificent marble-floor Champagne bar to the ballroom fully restored to its original glory, is grand.”
“This handsome Victorian hotel is part of the Central station: some rooms overlook the platforms. High ceilings, vast corridors stretching into the distance and a fabulous ballroom are highlights of this throwback to rail’s golden age.”
“A generally stylish hotel with direct access to Glasgow Central Station, making it a great base for short stays in this culturally rich city. The lobby is great for people-watching; sink into a deep, comfy armchair and watch guests going to and from the station, just next door.”

Great overnight stay in ideal location
Polite, helpful, friendly staff. Large, comfy room and bed. Relaxing and atmospheric bar. Wonderful breakfast with gluten free options.
It's not a major thing but when looking out of our window there was rubbish and plastic bags on exterior windowsills and the area could do with a general clean up to make it even more pleasant.

A grand hotel in name and nature
Despite the noisy location. the hotel was quiet, roomy, clean. The furniture in most older hotels tend to be a little "battle-worn". - this hotel was quite the opposite.

Beautiful big hotel. We had a twin deluxe and the room was so big with a sofa and table.
Breakfast was exceptional, plenty of choice.
We got in just before it was busy but possibly not much room when busy for moving about the food area.

Amazing. Loved it. Depressed it’s over already! Desperate to return now! Excellent staff.
Location, luxury feeling, amenities, friendliness and accommodating staff (early check-in and late check out and complimentary bar vouchers). Faultless service .
Unexpectedly noisy due to being attached to Central Station so heard either music or announcements during our stay but this lessened during the night and when windows/shutters were closed over.

Great stay in central Glasgow
Breakfast was great, location as well. The room was very quiet, delighted with the early check in as we arrived from the US early and didn’t sleep on the flight. Staff really friendly too. Overall everything was superb. 10/10 definitely be back soon.
All great, nothing to complain about.
