Malmaison Hotel, Glasgow

278 W George St, Glasgow G2 4LL, Scotland (show on map)

The Malmaison Glasgow is a striking boutique hotel that occupies a former Greek Orthodox Church, originally designed by architect John Stephen in 1838. Located in the city’s prestigious Georgian West End, the building has transitioned through several identities—from its religious roots as St Jude’s Episcopal Church to professional offices—before its 1994 transformation into the stylish hotel it is today.

Blending history with modern luxury, the hotel retains unique architectural elements of the old church. Guests can dine in the “Chez Mal” Brasserie, which is intriguingly situated in the building’s original crypt. The decor throughout the 72 rooms and suites offers a sharp, contemporary contrast to the historic stone exterior, featuring bold graphic prints, sophisticated textures, and sleek, modern furnishings.

The hotel’s personality is defined by its playful, “lifestyle-first” approach, where professional service meets a relaxed atmosphere. The “Duplex Suites” are particularly noteworthy, offering split-level living with mezzanine bedrooms and skylights that frame the Glasgow skyline, providing a distinct perspective of the city from within the historic structure.

Its central location makes it a perfect starting point for exploring Glasgow’s cultural heart. You are just steps away from the lush greenery of Blythswood Square and within easy reach of the city’s world-class museums, such as the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Whether you are heading to the vibrant shopping streets or visiting the nearby historic Tenement House, the hotel’s position in the city centre ensures you are perfectly placed for an urban adventure.

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“This former church is a longtime favourite for its decadent decor and plush lines. Stylish rooms with mood lighting have a dark, brooding tone and opulent furnishings.”

Telegraph review:

“Nothing orthodox about this former Greek Orthodox Church, transformed into a stylish modern boutique hotel in a city centre location. There’s a lively lounge bar, excellent brasserie dining and a casual bar.”

Quite a good hotel.

It has a nice feel about the it in the rooms overall when on a higher floor.

Samina on reception looked at us as though we were something on her shoe when we arrived. She clearly thinks she is a little bit too good to be a hotel receptionist. On the other hand, the lovely young man who was on the desk when we came back after was the entire opposite - pleasant and respectful.

Good value hotel for a short stay

Staff were great - very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Decor good. Location very convenient, and room comfortable.

Room was a little on the small side, and no aircon so in summer I'd imagine it would be very hot. No light to work by - could have done with one light that allowed you to work, or see to put make up on. Finally, I'd not stay in the room I had this time again as there was quite a loud underlying hum as if from some sort of industrial fan which woke me up very early.

Good location for overnight stay

Good location for station, downhill 10 walk. Quiet location in the city. Bed was very comfy.

The room was fine for an overnight stay, just not my taste in decor, very black and grey, corporate. Only left one towel but I’m sure we could have asked for another. We were in a ground floor standard room.

Satisfactory and comfortable business stay!

The staff was polite and helpful and the room was very clean. The room was at par with any 5 star property minus the frills like slippers and skincare products. The breakfast was delicious and the location is excellent if you have work in central Glasgow. The hotel also has a well equipped patio to sit outdoors. Overall a positive experience!

The hotel can add small amenities like slippers and skincare in the room, especially considering the location is in the business district.

Reasonably priced hotel in a good location with friendly staff.

The staff were very friendly. The hotel was in a good location.

We were in a twin room and I found the bed rather narrow and the mattress not terribly comfortable.

A lovely city centre hotel, a cut above the rest, gorgeous breakfast, would

Best hotel breakfast, bed was really comfy, lovely toiletries

Room colour was a bit industrial. Was expecting to have a lovely shower as it was a rainfall shower but sadly it was not powerful. Sink didn’t drain well

The hotel was nice but I was surprised when it fell short in the areas I've mentioned.

Nice large room, clean, good tea and coffee facilities.

There were no plug sockets by the bed. We had to go looking for the second bath towel in the wardrobe. The large bed was two beds pushed together and you could feel the gap.

Nice Hotel, but No Parking

Room was very comfortable and roomy. Nice little sitting area with a love seat. Good bathroom.

Unfortunately, our arrival was a bit chaotic and that put everything off. We booked here because booking.com said they had on-site parking. They don't, which they warned me about in their confirmation letter. But they did offer us bag drop off at check-in, and then instructions on where to park off-site. Problem is, there isn't a loading zone at the hotel. It's illegal to park in front, so either you find street parking, pay for it and unload from a few blocks away, or park illegally and scramble to unload your bags. Then, the instructions to pay in advance for a car park 6 blocks away were confusing, and the front desk clerk was a "soft talker" so getting settled with our car was unsettling, and those first 10 minutes sadly set the tone for our first day in Glasgow. And for that reason, we gave a low "location" rating. ADDITION: The hotel recommended we "pre-book" our parking, which we did for 2:00pm. But we arrived 12 minutes early. So even though we stayed in the garage for less than 24 hours, the garage billed us an additional GBP 3.00 for arriving outside our booked time. Not the hotel's fault, but they should warn patrons of this before encouraging that we pre-book.

Brilliant stylish stay in a great location.

Location, style of hotel and friendly staff. Super comfy bed. Liked the nice designer soap in the bathroom, and bottle of chilled water in the fridge 👍

Parking is a bit of a trek, but it is a city centre location.

First time staying in a Mal Maison would definitely look to stay in another

the bar had a lovely vibe in the evening when we came back from the city, Breakfast had a fantastic range and was great quality. The room was great and the facilities. The staff on reception were very helpful.

The bed - we had an awful sleep, the mattress was poor, it dipped in the middle and we both had a restless sleep as a result and woke with a bad back as we kept rolling into the middle.

Comfy, quiet, good value but not super exceptional either,

Room was good, lacked AC but the cost/value was still good, bed was comfy. En suite was massive,

The en suite shower glass had a massive crack in it. The bar was frankly just overpriced, not just expensive but almost offensive. It's not central London, there are 20 bars 2 mins away at half the price. It was bad to the point where I went to tesco and bought drinks back to the room out of sheer stubbornness.

Not much daylight coming through the windows, all a bit dark but I realise that’s Malmaisons thing. One decent light would be good to be able to initially see.

Nice place loads of potentially but I likely won’t return.

Good location, nice comfy bed.

The bar staff in the hotel provided a really poor level of service. I was one of the few people in the bar and it appeared like they deliberately avoided eye contact with me to prevent having to serve me. Eventually when I grabbed one of their attention she asked “what do you want?” And I nearly walked out, really poor service and a bit annoying.

Malmaison Glasgow lets the standards of the chain down

The breakfast was very good. Good selection and very tasty.

The welcome we received when we arrived was not what we’ve received at other hotels in the Malmaison chain. It felt like the gentleman at reception thought we had wondered in off the street without a booking and changed his attitude slightly when we explained we had a booking. We are in the hospitality and tourism industry ourselves and train our staff to always exceed expectations not just meet them. Unfortunately, on this occasion our expectations weren’t even met. The hotel itself looked shabby in places and the cleaning standards weren’t the best.

Pleasant

It is a cool building and the beds were very comfortable.

The easily visible elevator broke and no one made sure guests clearly knew that there was another evevator down the hall. Also, when we checked in, there was a systems/internet issue so the staff refused to allow us in our rooms (although they were ready) until they could scan our credit cards. That lead to a time period where we just had to sit around and wait for what turned out to be some hours. No manager addressed us to apologize or make other arrangements. I felt like the front desk staff were left hanging with a customer service issue they had no control over. Because of there not being any outlets in the bathroom, there should be a mirror by the outlets in the main room.

Friendly hotel in a convenient location

Really friendly atmosphere from the time we entered till the time we checked out! Enjoyed both the bar and the restaurant. Staff at the reception were particularly helpful.

With all the scaffolding it was a little difficult to locate the hotel in the dark but that’s not a criticism!
