The Raeburn, Edinburgh

112 Raeburn Place, Edinburgh, EH4 1HG, United Kingdom. (show on map)

The Raeburn is a stunning boutique hotel located in the heart of Stockbridge, one of Edinburgh’s most charming and affluent neighborhoods. Originally built in 1832 as an elegant Georgian family home, the building was meticulously restored by owner Ross Maclean and his family. Their goal was to preserve the house’s period character while integrating modern luxury, resulting in a beautiful B-listed property that balances history with contemporary comfort.

The hotel features ten unique, individually designed bedrooms, many of which offer a touch of indulgence with freestanding roll-top baths and marble-finished rainforest showers. One of its most distinctive interior features is the “Library Snug,” which includes a hidden door and 3D-effect book spines. The property also boasts an expansive outdoor terrace—the only one of its kind in the immediate area—which overlooks the historic rugby grounds of Raeburn Place.

Dining and socialising are central to the hotel’s appeal, with a popular bar featuring wood panelling inspired by traditional whisky barrel bands. The restaurant and bar areas are thoughtfully designed with a mix of bespoke oak tables and rustic décor to distinguish the different spaces. The attention to detail extends to the lighting and furnishings, which combine antique-style elements with modern functionality.

Its location in Stockbridge is perfect for those who want to experience a more local side of Edinburgh. The famous Stockbridge Sunday Market is just around the corner, and the lush Royal Botanic Garden is only a short walk away. While it offers a peaceful retreat, you are still within easy reach of the city’s major landmarks, including the historic Edinburgh Castle and the bustling streets of the New Town.

Expert reviews

Telegraph review:

“No expense was spared in creating this popular bar/restaurant with boutique rooms in a great neighbourhood. Expect a moody modern look with heritage touches, luxurious bathrooms, delicious cocktails and upmarket extras in the rooms, from GHD straighteners to espresso machines.”

A comfortable stay in a high quality room

Great location and a nice, comfortable room. Very ample space. A lively pub downstairs but we couldn't hear any noise in the room, and the vibe downstairs seemed fun. It was a very relaxing stay. The location in Stockbridge is lovely, and it's an easy (uphill) walk to the centre of town.

The price was quite steep. This was probably because it was over the winter holiday period, but it did feel like a lot for what it was.

A magical stay in this beautiful boutique hote, bar and restaurant with wonderful service. and

Our stay at the Raeburn was incredible. The friendly and attentive service, provided by Lyndsey, Jackie and Hannah in particular made the experience so much more impressive. The stylish interiors, atmosphere, festive decor and our glorious room were also a highlight. We had a delicious breakfast and lunch and enjoyed drinks in the beautiful bar. Highly recommend!

Nothing- all good!

We had a great time staying here.

Breakfast was fantastic, as was the service.

The bar and drinks on offer are extensive, and very good.

Location is fantastic, ideal if you want to escape the more touristy area's.

Nothing! All was fantastic.

Everything was faultless - the staff, the room, the food (best breakfast menu ever), the location. We can't wait to go back!

There wasn't anything to dislike.

Really enjoyed staying in Stockbridge and will definitely be back at The Raeburn.

The deluxe room was lovely and spacious enough for our two year old to run around in which he thoroughly enjoyed. The staff were all extremely friendly throughout our stay. My favourite part about the Raeburn is that you have the bar and restaurant downstairs which is ideal when meeting friends but might need a quick escape with a toddler.

Nice place to stay.

Great room, excellent breakfast, fantastic service

We were at the front of the hotel which meant we had to endure piped music played for those who were drinking outside at the front. Would ask for a room at the back if we stayed there again.

Wonderful location and fabulous staff!

Wonderful location! Staff was uniformly attentive and helpful! Felt like being a guest in a friend’s city mansion!

Lack of air-conditioning is rarely an issue in Scotland, but it made the night uncomfortable

Luxury rooms but ...

We booked The Raeburn based on reviews and overall we were happy with our decision. It was a good 20 minute walk into the Edinburgh tourist area but we did know that prior. The rooms are stunning and so comfortable with lovely big bathrooms. The rooms were sound proof which was important given the very busy pub underneath

We didn't realise how popular the pub and restaurant underneath the rooms was. It was bit of a shock arriving on a busy afternoon and having to push through the crowds to get to the desk for checkin. The one downside which would probably cause us to look elsewhere was that there is no communal space for guests to sit away from the pub crowd. The "library" and other spaces were being used for other functions or events the whole time we were there and there was nowhere quiet we could sit as a family of 7 to catch up with each other. The walk to the main tourist area also meant it wasn't easy to just pop out to do an activity

The hotel made our trip. On arrival they got us a parking space which meant the car stayed there for the weekend! Lovely

Lovely room, great bar and restaurant - and in a quieter location but within walking distance of the city.

Not many parking spaces!

A great location for an Edinburgh base

The staff could not be more friendly and helpful. The executive room we had was well appointed with a large bathroom. Comfortable beds and classy decor

The room was a little warm and with the front window open the sound of pub patrons was audible to 1am

Fabulous, luxurious stay

So central in the heart of Stockbridge. The rooms were amazing. Large and beautifully designed and decorated but also extremely comfortable. We loved the walk in dressing room which was designed to look like a wardrobe! Great attention to detail in the room with thoughtful extras. The staff were so attentive and friendly. The bar was busy but a great atmosphere. The breakfast was really great. We really enjoyed this night away here and will return.

Nothing. Our room looked on to the outside steps leading to a balcony area however we were not disturbed at all.

Amazing, will be staying here again :)

The room was very beautiful, lots of amenities like teas, Nespresso coffee machine, ghd hair straighteners and offered to provide champagne and chocolate covered strawberries upon arrival. The room was a bit hot but a Dyson fan is provided

The standard double bed was a bit hard and was two beds connected in the middle I think so there was a crack down the middle that wasn’t ideal. Not awful by any means though we still got decent enough sleep

Super clean, friendly pub stay

Great food and the staff are really friendly. The room was extremely clean and spacious.

The place is essentially a pub with rooms and the website suggested it was much more of a hotel, so that was a bit disappointing as it was so busy in the evening with people in the pub section. The front had a covering so you couldn't actually see the facade, which creates a hotel feel on the website that wasn't in reality. Also, the library was closed for a private function, although there wasn't anyone in there during my stay.
