Hotel du Vin, Edinburgh

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“This boutique hotel in the city center is just a few minutes’ walk from nearly every tourist site. Each room has a custom-made sleigh bed and a hand-sprung mattress, but the hotel’s best feature might be the ultra-cozy, tartan-carpeted whiskey “snug,” a cozy room, all too tempting on a gray Scottish day.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Edinburgh.

Fodors review:

“Leave it to one of the U.K.’s most forward-thinking chains to convert a Victorian-era asylum into this understated luxury property that feels steeped in history and lore despite its contemporary decor and trappings, like the fairy-lit archway you enter through.”

Telegraph review:

“This hotel has all the hallmarks that make the Hotel du Vin brand so popular, with a big emphasis on wine and bistro dining, while still giving a sense of place with touches of tartan and exposed brick. The railway station, major tourist attractions and festival venues are all within convenient reach.”

A Gem in Edinburgh.

Amazing location with a beautiful hotel. Rooms were quiet and comfortable. Staff went above and beyond with assistance. Restaurant had great food and wine. Will stay again.

No on site parking. It was only a 5 min walk but you will pay £25/day no hotel validation.

Effortless and unaffected elegance

The staff at Hotel Du Vin is exceptional - the room was lovely and the location sheer perfection. I only ate one meal at the restaurant - breakfast one day - but was treated with such kindness and care. I selected this hotel based on reviews and was not in the least disappointed.

I can’t think of anything.

Fabulous hotel

Fantastic location to see all the main tourist sites. Lovely ambiance in the hotel. Staff were really welcoming, helpful and professional. Our room was stunning, beautifully appointed and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, great choice of hot food and a superb spread of buffet options. Loved the porridge!

Exceptional

Excellent location, but also nice and quiet. Beautifully presented hotel and our bedroom was lovely,. We had a great night sleep and the breakfast was great, especially as we're vegetarian which can sometimes be problematic. Staff are first class and it will be my go to hotel next time we're in Edinburgh

Tiny issue - providing toothpaste would be helpful

Splendiferous

I booked this for my son and his girlfriend. They told me it was the nicest hotel they had ever stayed at. They loved the room, the food, the location and were blown away by the attention to detail. Now I need to go!

Not one fault was found. You can’t go wrong with this level of excellence

Our room was nicely updated in an old building. We walked everywhere and were close to everything in the Old Town. The

The hotel was located walking distance to everything we wanted to see.

The rooms are named after wineries…no room numbers. It was difficult to find our room since there are many hallways and staircases and no logical order to the room names.

You will be lucky to discover this jewel amidst a large city.

A very lovely stay in a particularly good location. We found everything clean and comfortable and the staff was particularly pleasant and helpful. The only reason for less than a perfect score was they were understaffed and for me, something important, the coffee was terrible.

The Receptionist when we checked in was super nice. Forget his name but I think he's from Spain.

The dinner menu, the tub and Nespresso in the room,, and the location was perfect. The upgrade for for a fee was a masterstroke.

The barman was super busy and drinks took too much time.

Loved it!

A very beautiful property and old Edinborough with indoor and outdoor seating a library, and indoor bar, private space , it was very, very elegant hotel. I would definitely stay there again. Additionally, the bed was very comfortable. I loved it.

Wish the price could’ve been a little cheaper, but it was expensive, but I loved it

A nice place to stay

Staff attitude and helpfulnesswas exceptional. A interesting building in a very good location-- close to restaurants and within walking distance to the Royal Mile and other attractions. The room was comfortable, and we enjoyed a nice dinner at the restaurant. There is a courtyard/patio area that is a pleasant place to sit in the evening with a glass of wine.

The breakfast buffet was overpriced (19 GB pounds, and 25 GB pounds with inclusion of hot made to order items). The buffet items lean too much towards "sweet" everything-- even the fruit cups tasted sweetened (no fresh cut fruit selection). There was bread for toast. I did not see any plain yoghurt-- the granola yoghurt (?) cups were too sweet. The cheese and meat charcuterie that was listed on the buffet menu were no where to be seen. I asked -- and was told that it was available on request. Not knowing what was available and not wanting a lot of stuff I was not going to use, I asked for a couple of slices of cheese (I really would rather see and pick what I want). The waitress brought out a large plate covered in cheese slices (of which I ate two). The buffet should have everything included out and available so one can select what they want. It needs work and more variety, especially for the price. For a hotel with a wine oriented name and bistro, I thought there would be a larger wine list and more variety by the glass. I would like to have seen more offerings of English wines, which I was curious about and wanted to find and taste. There were two on the wine list. One was a sparkling wine which was available by the glass. It was very good! I always seek out local wines when I travel and I would have enjoyed having the opportunity to taste more wines from Great Britain.

This was a solo trip for me, and I felt very comfortable throughout my stay.

The hotel is very close to all the main sites but far enough away to leave the crowds behind at the end of the day. The staff were kind and helpful. I loved how quiet and cozy my room was.

I can’t think of anything that disappointed.

Lovely hotel and lovely location

The receptionists were very helpful. The spaces to sit and relax were comfortable as was the room. The coffee in our room was high quality.

The door to our en suite bathroom made it a bit of a squeeze to get in there when it was open.

Beautiful, comfortable hotel with a great location

We loved the hotel and the location! The little bar is cozy. We found the rooms to be very comfortable. The location was perfect - only a few minutes from the Royal Mile, but just far enough to be away from the center of the chaos!

The hotel felt extraordinarily expensive, but that may be a circumstance of timing. We did visit during the busiest travel month.

It was expensive but a worthy stay.

Excellent bicycle storage in a small garage; we had a junior suite on the top floor so tub was great (although hot water ran out if we didn’t watch it), very good breakfast and the bistro dinner we had was very good. Good service all round. Really like the location across from the Univ. of Edinburgh which was a bit out of the fray of touristy Edinburgh.

Our suite was at the top of the building and the lift only goes part way- when we arrived the manager took our gear up (very nice) but we had to lug it down on checking out.

As above

Breakfast good, located excellent

We felt the extra charges ie service charges were not made clear. Even passing a whisky from bar to our table incurred a service charge. We were presented with an a4 page of charges, service charges. Plus an extra item on our bill for somebody else's breakfast item. We emailed you and to date you've not had the decency to reply Even.

Magical hotel in magical Edinburgh

Du vin is located in the center of old town easily walkable to all attractions. The staff were amazing and super helpful. The star of the show was the breakfast every morning. It was a great window into Edinburgh and I highly recommend staying there.

We were traveling with our 10 year old son and There was no enclosure to the bath area which was fully in view. It’s not suitable for families but other than this minor inconvenience everything was perfect
