Hotel du Vin, Edinburgh

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“This boutique hotel in the city center is just a few minutes’ walk from nearly every tourist site. Each room has a custom-made sleigh bed and a hand-sprung mattress, but the hotel’s best feature might be the ultra-cozy, tartan-carpeted whiskey “snug,” a cozy room, all too tempting on a gray Scottish day.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Edinburgh.

Fodors review:

“Leave it to one of the U.K.’s most forward-thinking chains to convert a Victorian-era asylum into this understated luxury property that feels steeped in history and lore despite its contemporary decor and trappings, like the fairy-lit archway you enter through.”

Telegraph review:

“This hotel has all the hallmarks that make the Hotel du Vin brand so popular, with a big emphasis on wine and bistro dining, while still giving a sense of place with touches of tartan and exposed brick. The railway station, major tourist attractions and festival venues are all within convenient reach.”

Very good hotel , staff excellent , breakfast really good, room comfortable but as with most hotels now seem to lack man

Location, staff , breakfast

Was a little noisy with our room facing the courtyard and noise from rooms above , but somewhat understandable due to age of building with old timber floors. Could be more in room amenities rather than those bottles used for soap etc

Perfect location, historic gem of a hotel with renovated interior.

Hotel du Vin had an overall old school charm that I loved, it felt like they renovated into the original space. The staff was over the top friendly and helpful. The menus were exceptional!

Great location and fantastic value for premium b&b

Superb upgraded room and great value bed and breakfast rate. I particularly liked the common areas with sofas, fire etc - very cozy. Cooked breakfast was superb.

Our room looked out onto a busy road and therefore we couldn’t really open window for fresh air- otherwise all great

Wonderful Boutique Hotel, but Restaurant Service Needs Leadership

The only aspect that fell short during our stay was the restaurant. While the space itself is beautiful and cozy, it lacks consistent service and clear direction. It seems to be missing someone truly in charge — a guiding presence to ensure that the experience is as polished and attentive as the rest of the hotel. At times, service felt disorganized or inattentive, which detracts from what could easily be a standout dining experience. That said, everything else about the hotel was simply wonderful. The rooms were charming and comfortable, the atmosphere throughout the property was warm and inviting, and the staff in all other areas were exceptional. With just a bit more attention to the restaurant side, this boutique gem could be perfect.

Comfortable

Clean rooms, close to local attractions

Due to the age of the building, sound does travel through the building into rooms. But not a major problem

Phenomenal location!

Loved the location and it was a beautiful hotel. Maze style layout of rooms given odd names and no numbers. Made for some entertaining walks to find our room. Our room had a slanted ceiling that even was low for a short person like me. The window faced the street and it got hot at night, but people yelling below made it difficult to sleep with the windows open. The bartender handled all of the restaurant drink orders and the bar by himself! Not good when you are waiting for drinks. Felt sorry for him. The location was phenomenal and the outdoor seating was very pleasant. Definitely worth coming back, I think!

Beautiful hotel, great location with the friendliest staff

The room was lovely - bed huge and comfy. Staff were fantastic.

Room could get very warm but figured out the thermometer - might be good to have instructions somewhere! Also - very 1st world problem, but the coffee spoons are too short for the cups provided 😂

Would definitely recommend this hotel for visiting Edinburgh

Staff were very friendly and helpful, made us feel very welcome. Building is very quirky and old but very well presented, clean and comfortable. Lovely and peaceful stay.

Shower could have been a little hotter and heating system was very noisy, but we didn’t need it at night so switched it off.

The usual high standard HDV hotel in a good location.

Breakfast the usual excellent HDV standard, lovely dining room. Bedroom lovely, bed superb, interesting city street view. Very helpful reception staff. Good location for strolling to interesting locations. Car park five minutes walk away but could drop off luggage before checking in. Appreciated discount on parking costs.

We do not understand the thinking behind having a bath in the bedroom, where I would not be a pretty sight fully exposed in the morning. But having the shower in the room, as here, just seemed weird.

Stay for the comfort of the room not for the restaurant or the exterior ambiance.

The location was very convenient. Once you get inside, the property is very nice with a sleek and clean interior. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were very clean.

Google Maps took us to the back entrance so we couldn’t get in but it looked very nice. Seeing the front entrance was disappointing with closed up buildings and graffiti. We also tried the restaurant. The service was very slow. They didn’t have Sauvignon Blanc and the waitress wasn’t sure they had any vodka. It was a disappointment.

Classic comfortable hotel du vin within 15 minutes of central Edinburgh.

Lovely old building with lots of character. We had one of the suites and it was great - lots of space, sofa, lovely bath and nice big shower. Extremely comfy bed with crisp bed linen. Nice teas, shampoos etc

Breakfast was mediocre and expensive.

An excellent hotel in a beautiful city.

The location was outstanding, just a short walk to the castle and main city attractions, a little further for the normal shopping etc. The building is lovely and well thought through.

Late arrival due to delayed flight, arrived at 1.30am the night porter welcomed us in and with out any fuss showed us to our super room (suite ) Restaurant… excellent food & service accompanied by fantastic staff, nothing was a problem, all served with a big smile. (Sam & Helen) Lounge and bar area’s very comfortable, soft lighting with excellent period sofa’s and arm chairs . Location is also perfect. Overall we had a fabulous three night stay, if we go back to Edinburgh again, we will most definitely stay at the Hotel du vin.

Quiet, comfortable and welcoming.

We had the suite which was excellent. Clean, comfortable and huge! The breakfast was great, the evening meals delicious and the staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. A ten minute walk to the royal mile, the castle, fabulous independent coffee shops, the station and bus services made it a great location.

There wasn’t much not to like!

Lovely cosy hotel with super friendly staff. The breakfast was excellent!

The cooked breakfast was absolutely spot on. I had avocado and poached eggs. Very friendly staff and cosy atmosphere to the hotel. Comfortable bed, lovely sheets.

Didn’t love the bath and shower being in the main room as we were two friends who didn’t wish to see each other shower. Also, separating the loo from the sink would have been preferable. Would have loved to have a mirror by the window to use the daylight since there was no window in the bathroom.
