Minos Beach Art Hotel, Crete

Akti Ilia Sotirchou, Agios Nikolaos, 72100, Greece. (show on map)

Along the edge of Mirabello Bay, Minos Beach Art Hotel is legendary as Crete’s very first luxury resort, opening back in 1963. Visionary hotelier Eleni Nakou teamed up with architect Elias Sotirochos to design something groundbreaking for the era: instead of a towering block, they created a low-lying, whitewashed layout mimicking a traditional Cretan fishing village. It immediately drew the 1960s bohemian jet-set, hosting glamorous icons like Jeanne Moreau and even Walt Disney.

What makes the resort truly distinct today is its identity as a living, breathing open-air museum. In 1988, the Mamidakis family transformed the grounds into a striking sculpture garden. It now hosts over 55 site-specific contemporary art installations scattered along 2.5 kilometers of rugged coastline, allowing you to stumble upon brilliant Greek and international artwork right beside the Aegean Sea.

The accommodations are all about minimalist, indoor-outdoor living, featuring earthy stone tones, raw concrete, and exposed wood beams. If you grab one of the iconic waterfront bungalows, you get your own private sun terrace with stone steps that lead directly down into the crystal-clear water.

For a taste of the real Crete, you can wander over to Adeste, the hotel’s traditional village *kafenio* (coffee shop) where locals drop in to chat and play traditional music over glasses of raki. The restaurants also lean heavily into the community, sourcing over 90% of their ingredients and local wines from the immediate area.

The hotel sits just a fifteen-minute stroll from the elegant coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. While exploring, you can check out Lake Voulismeni—a stunning, red-cliffed body of water where, according to ancient Greek mythology, the goddesses Athena and Artemis used to bathe.

Telegraph review:

“From Katia Roka’s striking Ariadne’s Thread near the glass-walled reception, to the works of some of Greece’s best contemporary artists studding the grounds, this hip haven fronting the wide mirrored curve of Mirabello Bay offers a big slice of Greek culture – with lashings of creature comforts.”

Lonely Planet review:

“Privacy, luxury and tranquillity are taken very seriously in this sprawling resort in a superb waterfront location just north of town. Gardens dotted with conversation-sparking art lead to white-cube bungalows and villas kitted out in comfy but minimalist style.”
