Established in 1755, Hotel d’Angleterre is Copenhagen’s ultimate grande dame. The hotel’s legendary history actually began as a romantic love story between Jean Marchal, a French servant of the court, and Maria Coppy, the daughter of the royal chef. They fell in love and opened a modest restaurant that eventually evolved into Denmark’s most prestigious luxury address.
The hotel’s striking white neoclassical façade, which anchors the city’s largest public square, was famously shaped by renowned Danish architect Vilhelm Dahlerup in the 1870s. More recently, a massive restoration by the acclaimed architecture firm C.F. Møller beautifully balanced that imperial, Victorian majesty with sleek, plush Nordic design. Beyond its jaw-dropping Palm Court ballroom, a highly unique feature is its subterranean “Amazing Space” spa, which boasts the only indoor swimming pool in downtown Copenhagen.
The culinary legacy of the founding couple lives on at Marchal, the hotel’s celebrated Michelin-starred restaurant fusing French and Nordic flavours. Right next door, you can grab a drink at Balthazar, which made history as Denmark’s very first champagne bar, serving bubbles from more than 42 different champagne houses.
Location-wise, you are right on Kongens Nytorv (The King’s New Square), giving you a front-row seat to the city. Step outside and you are seconds away from the colorful, iconic 17th-century canal district of Nyhavn, the Royal Danish Theatre, and Strøget, one of Europe’s longest pedestrian shopping streets.
