Expert reviews

CN Traveler review:

“Palacete Severo was built by architect Ricardo Severo in 1904, displaying different stylistic elements from all over Portugal, making it something of a museum of details. Today the yellow-walled house has been immaculately restored by designer Paulo Lobo to offer 20 rooms in the main house as well as a new building across the garden.”

Telegraph review:

“This small, saffron-yellow palace stands in a residential part of Porto and is surrounded by ancient camellia trees. Built by noted architect Ricardo Severo in 1904, the building has been beautifully preserved with original stained glass, hand-painted tiles and stuccoed ceilings. An outdoor saltwater pool and fine-dining restaurant add to the appeal.”

All you need to know

If you’re wandering through the creative neighbourhood of Cedofeita in Porto and stumble upon the yellow-facaded building at Rua de Ricardo Severo 21, you’ve found Palacete Severo. A gorgeous mix of heritage house and boutique hotel.

Originally designed by the multi-talented Ricardo Severo early in the 1900s for his Brazilian wife, this spot preserves ornate details like stained-glass windows, mosaic floors and wood-panelled loggias.

After a period of neglect, the building has been lovingly restored into a 20-room retreat that honours its past while offering modern luxury.

Inside, the vibe is relaxed but refined: a calm garden hiding away from city noise, a pool, tranquil spa rooms, and an art gallery tucked into the hotel that gives it more of a “living home” feel rather than a standard hotel.

The restaurant, run by Michelin-starred chef Tiago Bonito, plays with Mediterranean flavours and local Portuguese ingredients. Perfect if you want to dine somewhere that feels special without being overly formal.
