Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“The Gran Hotel flaunts the French art nouveau style of the pre-revolution era. Crowned by a stained-glass canopy crafted by Tiffany in 1908, the atrium is a fin de siècle fantasy of curved balconies, wrought-iron elevators and chirping birds in giant cages. Rooms do not disappoint in comparison.”

What guests liked

All you need to know

Gran Hotel Ciudad de México offers a modern and elegant stay along with breathtaking views of the main plaza to the guests. This 5-star hotel is located in the heart of the city, close to many famous attractions. Once you step into the hotel, you’ll be surprised to see the beautiful historic architecture that is aesthetically pleasing combined with the world-class service. You can book a room or a suite depending on your liking and budget. All the rooms feature air conditioning, free WiFi, a TV, a desk, and an attached bathroom with a panoramic mirror.

The building was originally built in 1526 as a residence of the Royal Accountant. In 1895, it was turned into a shopping center – the first ever in Mexico. Finally, in 1968, it was inaugurated as a hotel representing a unique cultural heritage that is worth exploring. One major highlight of the hotel is its Tiffany-style stained glass window, which is said to be one of the four largest windows in the world.

The hotel also houses one of the best restaurants in Mexico City, La Terraza Restaurant, located on the 5th floor. This restaurant offers finger-licking good cuisine through their exclusive a la carte menus. The Metropolitan Cathedral and the Presidential Palace are located within walking distance of the hotel. The spectacular Castillo de Chapultepec gardens are also located nearby – just a short drive away. While you admire the interior of the hotel and its services, don’t miss capturing the breathtaking views of Zócalo Plaza from the rooftop.

Lovely Hotel

We were very happy with the Gran Hotel Ciudad de México. The room size was perfect and very clean, The staff were friendly and especially Mario who was very personable and helpful. It is located in an extremely busy area with lots of activity on the Historic square. The area has lots of places to eat and tons of stores. Highly recommend!

The restaurant was not impressive. Our first night the food was just okay, but the service was terrible. We stopped for brunch one morning again, the food was just okay, but the service was much better.

Fabulous

Loved the room and the zocalo view. I was lucky enough to see the President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum give a speech from the balcony in my room. Very surreal experience! There is a lounge for guests which has free coffee, tea, canned sodas, apples, cookies, and nuts. They have water stations so you could refill your bottle which reduces waste. The area is very crowded, I was there around Christmas but I never felt unsafe at all. There is plenty of security since The President literally lives across the zocalo! You are greeted with the zocalo, Templo Mayor, and the cathedrals when you step outside. Very easy to walk down Madero street to go to Palacio de Bellas Arts, Palacio Postal, MUNAL, Casa de los Azulejos. The turi bus is right by the cathedrals I highly recommend the night tour which takes you to all the main landmarks without hopping off. Just wear a jacket because it gets chilly!

The zocalo is noisy 24/7 and the windows are not soundproof so it is hard to fall asleep but it is definitely a once in a lifetime experience. The second sink had water that wouldn't go away it's an older facility that needs more maintanance.

We enjoyed our stay and if we are ever back in Mexico City we will book again

Loved the location! From our balcony you faced the Zócalo, in the evening for a night cap we went rooftop and enjoyed the view.

Beds were not very comfortable, way too hard and same with the pillows. I thought breakfast was included (esp for the price)

Amazing hotel, amazing location and would highly recommended!

The hotel interior was breathtaking and the view from the hotel restaurant over the main square was amazing. I always really like that there was a private lounge for guests to access where you could get free none alcoholic drinks, snacks and also play games such as air hockey and table football. Also, a special mention to Miguel and Alejandro who worked in the lobby. Always there to help, remembered my name and what I was doing each day and Alejandro even helped me at the pharmacy. They both made me feel so welcome. Amazing assets to an amazing hotel!

The service at the restaurant wasn’t always as friendly as the hotel, but it was very busy.

A grand hotel in the center of it all!

The location is at the corner of Zócalo square and many, many other major sightseeing destinations are walkable from the front door. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful and the hotel is kept in top condition, despite its age. The cleaning staff were thorough and also very friendly and outgoing and helpful. The ceiling in the atrium of the lobby is a wonder to behold and the stairways are likewise a piece of art, unlike most hotels where they are hidden. The metal work and supports as well. Spend time exploring the architecture. The hotel seems to be very inviting of tourists who come in the see the atrium as an important CDMX site on its own. Only guests of the hotel are allowed on guest room floors, and access is restricted and security is thorough. There is no doubt why this is rated number 1 on many travel sites.

We had no complaints. The front steps are a bit of a chore with full suitcases, but the bellhops are both strong and friendly!

Exceptional

It is located right at the corner of historic center of Mexico City. Close to metro and major attractions and you can see the view of plaza from its terrace restaurant. Colorful glass ceiling looks stunning under the sun. It was decorated with lighting for Christmas and an old-fashioned elevator to room when checking in which I only saw in Europe. The room is spacious and comfortable with classic furniture. The bed is soft and comfy. The bathroom is big and has the best shower I had in Mexico City, hot and strong. The lounge at 1st floor offers snacks and drinks and I was told it opens 24 hrs. The staff is nice and attentive.

Great central hotel

We chose the hotel because of its central location and it certainly delivered on that. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable with a huge bed and all the usual facilities.

It was a bit expensive but I guess that’s the location.

Beautiful historic hotel in the heart of Mexico City

Our stay at Gran Hotel Ciudad de México was exceptional. The building itself is stunning, full of history and character, and the Zócalo view is absolutely incredible. Waking up to the main square and being right in the heart of the city was an unforgettable experience. The staff was very professional, attentive, and welcoming throughout our stay. The hotel was clean, comfortable, and beautifully maintained. The location is unbeatable and perfect for walking to major attractions, restaurants, and historic sites. We truly enjoyed our stay and would absolutely return. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Mexico City.

There was nothing we didn’t like.

Beautiful inside and out!

This hotel is absolutely beautiful. We arranged taxi transportation through the hotel, which made everything very easy and stress-free. The hotel is located on a lively, vibrant street, and the presence of guards outside made us feel very safe at all times. We had booked a food tour, so unfortunately we couldn’t enjoy breakfast the next morning. Instead, we had dinner on the terrace, which was a wonderful experience. The following day, we went on a tour to Tolantongo, and the amazing staff were kind enough to lend us towels—something we truly appreciated. We were also able to leave our luggage at the hotel and returned around 8 p.m. Despite heavy traffic and several street closures due to a show, the staff helped direct us to a street where Ubers were allowed. One of the guards even walked all the way to the taxi with us, which made us feel incredibly safe. Overall, it was a great experience. Thank you to the wonderful team at Gran Hotel Ciudad de México! You got a 10 from us. Keep the good work! You are very appreciated!!

If I need to find something I didn’t like is only that the The window in my room had nothing to look at. However this is the hotel structure I suppose.

Beautiful historic hotel, and the heart of the city.

We really appreciate the location and staff.

There was times we couldn’t really come in to hotel because there’s a lot of non-guests that want to take photographs of the main hall. So that got a little busy and annoying.

Iconic fabulous grand hotel on grand plaza with impeccable service

Icon 1899 hotel with exquisite interior and exterior on the grand plaza of Mexico City. This hotel is so icon that people who are not staying there come in to view the lobby. Impeccable staff. Breakfast buffet in on the top of the hotel overlooking the historic plaza, and the buffet was a good quality. The view from the excellent room was truly splendid. If you are into history and gilded age elegance, this is the place to stay. Also hotel arranged for a driver to airport.

There is zero downside except to say one could spend a little less, staying at some other place. I recommend you spend the extra. It will be worth it.

Beautiful stay at El Zocalo

Beautiful! The most beautiful hotel I’ve ever visited. For being a historic/ old hotel, the facilities were well maintained. Everything functioning. Everything beautiful. Our suite was immaculate clean. We had the junior suite with a balcony facing the zocalo. 10/10. I would stay here again. The buffet breakfast on the terrace was lovely. All staff were friendly and also spoke English. There was a nice room in the lobby for refreshments/snacks/coffee. Fast internet. And the gym was a nice bonus

Traffic. Since it’s the city center, there is traffic everywhere. No escaping it.

Fabulous

good location, excellent view of zócalo plaza at 5th floor Terraza when having breakfast and dinner, the fantastic decorations of the hotel atrract lot of tourists visiting the hotel, while the management is excellent, say we are not impacted by the visitors.

Since the entrance of the hotel is very close to the zocalo plaza, the car can’t park in front of the hotel, you may take off the car at the street around 100 meters besides the hotel. Another thing, since the hotel is very beautiful, my friend took photos for me and my friends inside the hotel at 4th floor, a male manager asked us for a charge on taking photos. We are surprised we are the guest of the hotel staying for 7 nights, why we are asked to pay for just taking photos inside the hotel.

Massive city to navigate never pay a taxi with credit card. . .

Grand hotel that was originally a department store and converted to a hotel for the 1968 Olympics! Great staff and sterling location but my stay was interrupted by planed demonstrations, hotel is on the Zócalo, so had to cut short last night of my stay and took a hotel by airport that worked out just fine. I had paid on arrival instead of keeping my account open so was unable to have credit for the one night I moved to airport hotel. I was under the impression that I had booked a room with a Zócalo view but that was not the case. I didn’t care for the room I was given and the manager kindly moved me to a wonderful room with the Zócalo view where I had nightly observation of the construction of blocks of barricades around the cathedral and government buildings preparing for 3 days of demonstrations. Truly an amazing experience. . .

An impressive experience, love the beauty of architecture of the hotel, and the perfect location.

Location is perfect, the building itself with art Nouveau and Tiffany stained colourful glass ceiling are unforgettable beautiful.

The hotel needs more maintenance... some stuff are not professionally friendly, gave an example: in the corridor met a woman clerk, she turned head away instead of a simple greeting or just a smile.

Incredible legar cette hôtel est fantastique , Io non vado a nessun altro, shabarashi , Americans see how Mexico isn’t

Where do I start We had check in a hostel for crime disguised as a hotel so we ran to the grand hotel hoping for a last minute room and they did get us a room last minute by Alfredo helping us 1st Jose Luis worked so hard to please us with the best accommodations Yael moved our stuff to our room and had been with us moving us to the second room I had for the next day. Miguel let us in and yet protected the door specially after the last place where we probably would have been mugged and kidnapped had we staid. On the back Cynthia makes sure all goes smooth. We had time to get into our day of the dead costumes Sandra took like 30 pictures of us and were very good. She’s talented. With a camera. Finally Pamela checked us out with a warm good bye. I could talk about the physical hotel if self but I don’t want to. The people made the difference of delight. Regardless of the hotel. That’s the magic of this place. The people.

I really can’t think of much

This hotel is a one of a kind experience, with the amazing stained glass roof and the excellent view

There could not be a better location in Mexico City, with the incredible view of the Zocolo from the Gran Hotel's rooftop restaurant! An absolutely magnificent and exceptional place. The Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico is a true gem in the heart of Mexico City. From the moment you walk in, you are mesmerized by its beauty - the stunning Art Nouveau stained glass ceiling, the original iron elevator, and the elegant architecture by Adamo Boari. Every detail reflects history, charm, and timeless elegance. The service is impeccable, the rooms are beautifully decorated, and the rooftop view is breathtaking. A historic and architectural treasure not to be missed when visiting Mexico City.

Felt like James Bond

The location is amazing and you really feel like you are enjoying a piece of history. The staff are brilliant

You can’t get Ubers/car pick up from outside the hotel. You need to walk to the end of the street. Not an issue but good to know. Also, on a weekend, the restaurant only does buffet food. Not a great selection for non meat eaters and it would be nice to be able to order from the menu.
