The Union Station Nashville Yards
The Union Station Nashville Yards is an architectural crown jewel, originally built in 1900 as a grand train terminal. Designed by engineer Richard Montfort, this Richardsonian-Romanesque masterpiece features soaring turrets, heavy stone masonry, and a 65-foot-high barrel-vaulted lobby ceiling adorned with gold-leaf medallions and original stained glass. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains one of Nashville’s most iconic landmarks.
The hotel is steeped in unique history, from the bas-relief angels of commerce to the legendary ghost of “Abigail,” who is said to inhabit room 711. Interestingly, the lobby once featured ponds that housed alligators, and the clock tower is capped by a statue of Mercury, the Roman god of travel. During its transformation from a transit hub to a luxury boutique hotel in 1986, workers even discovered remnants of original ticket office floor tiles, which have been preserved as a nod to the building’s railway past.
Location-wise, the property is perfectly positioned for exploring Music City. It sits steps away from the legendary entertainment of Lower Broadway and the Ryman Auditorium. Guests are also within easy walking distance of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Frist Art Museum, which is housed in another beautifully repurposed historic landmark.
Today, the hotel offers a stunning contrast between its 19th-century limestone exterior and the modern glass towers of the surrounding Nashville Yards. It stands as a sophisticated retreat that preserves the grandeur of the railroad era while anchoring itself in the heart of contemporary Nashville.
Expert reviews
“Formerly a 19th-century train station, the downtown Union Station Hotel was built in 1900 and was updated with $16 million worth of upgrades in 2007. The hotel is Southern, traditional and opulent, but with contemporary amenities and close to everything downtown.”

“Since 1900 this striking building has been a Nashville landmark. Today the barrel-vaulted, historic train station offers a unique lodging experience, combining the lure of the American railroad past with modern amenities.”

Great building & location. Comfortable rooms. The Old Town Trolley Tours have a stop near the hotel & that was handy.

Night desk clerk should be fired for her rudeness.

Never will stay here again! LOUD! Smallest room ever! Untrained staff and uber expensive!
The hotel itself is beautiful. A step back in time to this spectacular structure makes you appreciate the older architecture.
After 8pm the noise (and I wasnt facing Broadway and was on the 7th floor) was insanely loud. ALL NIGHT LONG! There was a train every night (overnight) that went by and made so much noise… never again!

Stunning hotel really close to broadway with really well styled rooms however they could elevate the guest experience a
The location was brilliant, the hotel is stunning and the room is beautiful. The food we ate both in the restaurant and in the bar was really good! The live music was always fantastic and the reception staff were always really helpful. The housekeeping staff were also really polite and helpful.
This could’ve been the best place I’ve ever stayed and it should’ve been for how much we spent! We felt disappointed with a few things such as there was only one robe in the bedroom when we arrived even though I’d stated to them when booking it was our honeymoon. Our shower had a big clump of hair that hadn’t been removed from the drain when we arrived and the air con was really loud in the room meaning we couldn’t really leave it on overnight. It is an old hotel so I understand that one might be difficult to do!

Visit the lobby, stay elsewhere
Magnificent public spaces. Re-purposed train station in downtown Nashville.
The room. Overlooking a parking lot, with the smallest bathroom I’ve ever the misfortune to endure. And, grossly overpriced.

I wasn’t advised that the hotel is under construction. If I had known that I would have booked another hotel.
