Belmond Cadogan Hotel, London
The Belmond Cadogan Hotel, located on the border of Chelsea and Knightsbridge, is a legendary London landmark that opened in 1887. Housed within five interconnected Queen Anne-style townhouses, the property is famous for its literary and social history. It was once a favourite retreat for playwright Oscar Wilde—who was famously arrested in room 118—and socialite Lillie Langtry, who lived there for seven years.
The hotel’s design, revitalised by Blair Associates and GA Design International, perfectly balances its storied past with modern British luxury. Guests will find over 400 original artworks throughout the halls, alongside quirky touches like bronze-cast books in the lift and mini libraries in every room. A particularly exclusive perk is the private access provided to the residents-only Cadogan Place Gardens, which include tennis courts.
Dining at the hotel is anchored by “The LaLee,” a café-restaurant that pays tribute to Lillie Langtry’s European travels. The menu reflects a sophisticated, seasonal approach to British cuisine, making it a popular spot for both locals and travelers seeking a refined atmosphere.
Its location is ideal for those wanting to soak up London’s culture. You are within easy walking distance of world-class institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Natural History Museum. For luxury shoppers, the iconic department store Harrods and the boutiques of Sloane Street are practically on your doorstep, making it a perfect base for exploring the city’s most elegant neighbourhoods.
Expert reviews
“Following Belmond’s four-year renovation of the five adjoining Queen Anne townhouses—one the old home of socialite Lillie Langtry—now the vibe is understated, marbled elegance but with Saatchi-worthy art and a crystal-encrusted peacock.”
“The Cadogan Hotel, which first opened in 1887, stands on Sloane Street midway between Chelsea and Knightsbridge. Its multi-million pound reincarnation combines the glossiness of Knightsbridge with the artistic vibe of Chelsea and does not forget its two most famous past residents, Oscar Wilde and Lillie Langtry.”
