Château Laurier Fairmont Hotel, Ottawa

1 Rideau St, Ottawa, ON K1N 8S7, Canada (show on map)

The Fairmont Château Laurier is a true landmark in Ottawa, often referred to as “the third chamber of Parliament” due to its proximity to government buildings and the many politicians who have frequented its halls. Opened in 1912, the hotel was commissioned by Grand Trunk Railway president Charles Melville Hays. Tragically, Hays perished on the Titanic just weeks before the hotel’s grand opening.

Designed by the Montreal firm Ross and MacFarlane, the building is a masterpiece of French Gothic Revival and Châteauesque architecture. Its limestone exterior, steep copper roofs, and conical turrets were specifically crafted to complement the nearby Parliament Buildings, helping realize Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s vision for the city.

The hotel is packed with history, having hosted royalty, world leaders, and celebrities like the Beatles and Nelson Mandela. For 18 years, the legendary portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh lived and worked in a sixth-floor studio at the hotel. Today, guests can still admire his iconic portraits displayed throughout the property.

Its location is unbeatable for culture seekers. Situated between the historic Rideau Canal—a UNESCO World Heritage site—and the vibrant ByWard Market, it is just steps away from Parliament Hill and the National Gallery of Canada. Whether you are walking through the nearby parklands or exploring Ottawa’s major museums, the Château Laurier remains the city’s most storied address.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“Château Laurier, now run by the Fairmont group, has for more than a century offered luxury accommodations in the heart of the city, just next door to Parliament and the Rideau Canal. Soaring turrets, Tiffany windows and grand ballrooms reflect its heritage as one of Canada’s grand railway hotels.”

Shortlisted in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Ottawa.

Lonely Planet review:

“By the Ottawa Locks, the city’s best-known hotel is a landmark in its own right. Built in 1912 to resemble a 16th-century French château, its 426 rooms and suites are predictably large and luxurious.”

Telegraph review:

“Named after Canada’s seventh prime minister Wilfrid Laurier, Fairmont Château Laurier has dominated the Ottawa skyline since opening in 1912. Its elegant corridors and grand ballrooms witness countless international events and celebrity guests, and the hotel is almost as recognisable as its neighbour, Parliament Hill.”

Nice hotel, for sure, but the hotel didn't track my request for a room with a bathtub

It's obviously a beautiful building, with great facilities like the pool and the cafe with the skylight.

When I booked the Deluxe King Room noted with a complementary upgrade on booking, I made a note/request in booking to the hotel, along with my arrival time, that I have a strong preference for a room with a bathtub, as I'm travelling with a small child. On the pictures of the room, I see a bathtub, so I was expecting that they will make a note of this, and offer me the room with the bathtub. When I arrived, they gave me a room on the fifth floor that was very nice, but it had a standing shower only, no bathtub. That meant I needed to get back down to request a room change. They handled that quickly, with the manager offering keys to another room on a lower floor, this one with a bathtub, but I couldn't help to shake the feeling that it was in all other ways a significantly inferior room, with a small window only, no comparison to the beautiful windows and view of that first room. In this other room, there was also an issue with one of the lamps and the heating that were resolved after a phone call, and the bed was positioned right above a smoke detector light that was blinking in our eyes all night long. It was OK, but the reality of it is that I the hotel failed to track/receive my note about the bathtub, and then they gave me the left-over room that they did have with a bathtub.

Charming and classic.

Generally great location and the cost is affordable.

Best location in Ottawa, close to everywhere.

The facilities are old and outdated, no hair blower, and the bed is not as clean as other 4 star hotels.

No self parking, valet parking is 60 dollars plus tax.

Amazing stay if staff were more familiar with procotols.

Everything but the below.

Check-in. I already paid in full for my booking reservation, which the property could not confirm. They told me all would be fine, and charged my card twice close to midnight for the first night. I was surprised and asked. They were kind to say they could not see the credit from booking.com, but will resolve it the next day. Eventually, it was resolved, but it was around check-out time.

Housekeeping. We found, upon return, that our room was open with the deadbolt jaming the door. Unacceptable and unsafe, if I may.

Pet fee. Charged twice for the pet fee.

Overall, it was a beautiful establishment. Staff should be trained around protocols. That said, I understand it is Christmas time and things are busy. For that, I say thank you.

Gorgeous historical hotel and very old money. Just beautiful yet lacks a few updated amenities.

The main / shared areas are lovely and full of history and beauty. The Zoe lounge is gorgeous and the service was fantastic.

The walls between suites as very thin. You can hear every conversation by people in the hallways and if you are talking in your suite passed midnight, you can bet someone will knock on your door and tell you to be quite.

Very pleasant environment in a great location.

Location and friendliness of staff

Check in line was very long due to a bus arriving just before we entered hotel but too few staff available for check-in during that time.

Great staff, room, beautiful property, I wouldn’t bother to eat there again.

Lovely property, most staff were very helpful and service oriented

The restaurant experience was sub par. The walk up bar men were great, the waiter barely took care of us after a long day in the car. We all work in the service industry. We were basically ignored, I had to ask for the bill. Not the kind of service you’d expect from a property like this.

Always a great place to see our capital.

Location, staff, food and room

Food was good, but pricey. Need also a little more variety in the quick shareable meals offerings.

Also, I understand why, the number of homeless and those dealing with addiction made the stay a bit uncomfortable

Comfortable Stay in a Charming Historic Property

The rooms were comfortable and clean.
The property is an old building, which adds a special charm to the hotel.
The staff provided great service—special thanks to Doris, our room attendant. She was very helpful and took great care of us

The fact that the building is old comes to a cost, as few things do not operate 100%: e.g. Showers, some lamps and other small details

Though the food and room made up for a lot, given the cost i would hesitate to stay again due to car

the room was beautiful and spacious, and what a view! the food was also excellent, and most of the staff was really great, in the restaurant and at the concierge service. Very nice indeed.

We had asked the valet to charge the car and they did not, forcing us to stop several times on our way back to Montreal. It ruined our workday entirely. As well, the cleanliness and maintenance of the washrooms near the restaurant was quite subpar with stalls that couldn't lock and taps that didn't work. Additionally we were rushed on checkout and one of the front desk people just left his colleague to do everything alone while he did paperwork, despite the line up.

We went for the Christmas markets in the Ottawa area and the hotel's Christmas theme added to this.

We arrived earlier than the usual check-in time, but they were able to give us our rooms and as requested the rooms were close together. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent as was breakfast. The location was perfect for exploring Ottawa. The Christmas decorations in the lobby were beautiful and the bonus of a visit from St. Nicholas at breakfast on Sunday morning was nice.

When we checked out on Sunday morning it was very busy and we had left our rental car for valet parking. It took over an hour to get the car out and by the time we had the the car there was no time to re-fill the gas tank (we had a train to catch) which ended up costing us extra for the rental car company to re-fill the gas.

Would recommend for the luxury & location.

I was able to check in 4 hours earlier which was amazing! Very comfortable bed. 2 complimentary waters in the room. Porter welcoming you out of taxi & at front door is a wonderful touch. Café in the hotel very handy.

I requested a quiet room & was given an interconnecting room, yes the connecting door is locked but obviously you hear everything so it was the opposite of my request.
For €174 for one night, breakfast should definitely be included. The main light in the room was over the hallway and not over the bed/dresser area which makes no sense, locker lamps aren't the same thing, I had to turn on the torch on my phone. There was water left in the normal kettle, this should be cleaned out+dried before next check in.

Staff is extremely gentle and respectful. The hotel looks amazing.

Comfortable and convenient.

Location and size of room although I prefer to have a bath tub and shower. Only shower in the room and was a room for a wheelchair/disabled person.

Distance of room from elevator was too far. No bath tub. I stay at the Chateau because it has tubs.

good stay but very expensive valet parking service

The location is one of the best in Ottawa — just steps away from Parliament Hill, the ByWard Market, museums, restaurants, and shopping. You can easily walk to all the main attractions without needing a car.
