The Orchid Hotel, Beijing

65 Baochao Hutong, Dongcheng Qu, Beijing Shi, China, 100009 (show on map)

Hidden deep within the winding alleys of Beijing’s historic Gulou neighborhood, The Orchid Hotel is a brilliant reimagining of a traditional Chinese siheyuan (a multi-family courtyard house). It is so tucked away into the residential fabric of the ancient hutongs that cars cannot even reach the front door. Guests navigate the final stretch on foot, immediately trading city noise for old-world charm.

The property was brought to life by its independent owners who chose to lovingly restore a dilapidated, old residential dwelling rather than tear it down. They paired traditional, exposed wooden beams and classic brickwork with clean, modern interiors. Instead of creating a sterile luxury environment, the design prioritizes neighborhood character and architectural preservation, capturing the true spatial logic of old Beijing.

One of its most unique features is the clever use of vertical space. Because courtyard homes are traditionally single-story, the hotel features a beautiful, multi-tiered rooftop terrace. Up here, you can drink wine or eat sourdough from their on-site bakery while looking directly out over a sea of traditional tiled hutong rooftops, old pagodas, and the historic Drum and Bell Towers.

The hotel acts more like a neighborhood collective than a standard lodging choice. It features a popular Middle Eastern restaurant called Toast, a dim sum spot, and separate private residences clustered around a shared co-working space. It is a brilliant example of how ancient architecture can be updated for modern travelers without losing its soul.

Expert reviews

CNN review:

“A laid-back hotel in one of the city’s most vibrant hutong neighborhoods, The Orchid offers a relaxing way to experience local life in old Beijing. From a trio of roof terraces you can catch sight of the famed Drum and Bell Towers looming over tiled rooftops.”

Fodors review:

“A firm favorite among travelers looking for somewhere hip but still down-to-earth, the Orchid is a serene spot in the heart of Beijing’s most vibrant hutong district.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Beijing.

Frommers review:

“A cozy 10-room charmer hidden away in one of Beijing’s up-and-coming hutongs, The Orchid is a favorite with travelers looking for character and comfort at a bargain price.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Beijing.

Telegraph review:

“This 10-room hotel in a traditional courtyard house is made for those seeking old Beijing with a serving of cool, in a hip and gentrified district of the city. It’s as eclectic as the whims of its Tibetan and Canadian owners, offering a hip restaurant, secret gardens and pretty terraces.”

If you want a stay in an authentic section of Beijing, select the Orchid. Good food options on site and very friendly a

It was a comfortable oasis in the middle of a hectic section of Beijing. My room was cozy and the breakfast at the Middle Eastern restaurant on the property was excellent. The staff was very friendly and helpful and spoke English really well.

The most beautiful way to start our trip, simply perfect

Beautiful hotel in the Hutongs. This is the best location to really experience Beijing and wander through the Hutongs and experience how people live. The hotel itself is like a gold nugget hidden away off a little lane way. The food is amazing and the restaurant Toast offers mouth watering food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The staff are so attentive and sitting in the reception area with the lovely Late each afternoon tasting all of the teas is an experience in itself. The two resident cats are delightful. We could not have loved our stay more and are so grateful we came across the Orchid Hotel.

Nothing, it was perfect

very nice stay in the central of the city with attractions closeby

Very nice central place, have their own restaurants and nice rooms

With a small 5 year old child sometimes it's difficult to find food, there is one nice sandwitch place on the spot but was opened for one day before going to renovation.

Loved this unique hotel

The hotel was in the heart of the Baochen hutong and the everyday life of the locals. I was so glad to choose this place as it was a unique find and every member of staff so welcoming and helpful. The breakfast at toast was yummy and the beautiful cats an extra bonus. Room 9 where we stayed had a projector and 100 of movies to watch.

A very minor issue was the noise from the street of just daily life.

Incredible hotel with the best staff in Beijing!

Everything! This is a wonderful hotel where the staff actually cares about its guests. The rooms were nicely decorated and the location in the hutongs was a great way to begin our trip inside historical Beijing. The staff gave ys excellent advice and were extremely helpful with all our questions. I would come back and recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Beijing.

Nothing.

Would stay here again next time I come to Beijing :)

Amazing location - would stay here again for sure, stunning hotel, really clean !
The staff were super helpful, offered to arrange tickets for tiananmen square/forbidden city, let us keep our suitcases while we went to the great wall. Would recommend Mr Shi's dumplings down the road

i liked everything, maybe the breakfast could be a bit more exciting?

Friendly and helpful people!

The place is lovely but with too many stairs and narrow paths ways, it’s a bit harder for older guests (70,80’s). The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful! Overall, we had a pleasant time!

A luxurious and accommodating stay in a cultural hub.

The staff went above and beyond making my stay enjoyable and accommodating any requests. I had to make a sudden change to my itinerary and add an extra nights stay in Beijing, which they quickly be happily accommodated. The room and amenities were also absolutely gorgeous. Overall, I absolutely recommend! This hotel was one of the highlights of my trip.

Perfect stay perfect location

What can i say? We absolutely loved our stay here. We were sad to leave Beijing and wish we booked longer. The location was exactly what i wanted from China. Lots of vibes and authenticity.
The staff spoke english well and nothing was too much of a problem.
The bed was firm but we like firm.
Good facilities including breakfast (with lots of choice). We had a couple of days with and early start so they made us a take away bag.
Washing was done for us which was appreciated and cost 100.
Tea and fruit and water in the room
Tele with english movies and shows to relax in the evening (we don’t tend to do much at night as generally do early mornings).
I loved this stay 100% recommend.

Refreshing weekend stay

The owners transformed the space beautifully and the kind hosts offered many tips on attractions and local activities. Well-utilized creatively designed rooms, fantastic location, central, and the beds are the comfiest. Bonus for breakfast options - western or oriental dim sum, and in-the-hotel tea ceremony. Would recommend in a heartbeat and will happily return to the Orchid once in Beijing.

Beautiful & peaceful hotel in the hutong of Beijing!

It was such a beautiful and charming hotel within a hutong in Beijing. We felt so at home here. It was peaceful and quiet. The staff were so lovely and helpful. We appreciated the map and small gift at check out. The staff recommended us a restaurant for Peking duck and helped us book a DiDi- the duck was incredible! We missed out on breakfast a few times due to early tours but my husband had the French toast on our last morning and said it was the best he has ever had. I highly recommend this hotel ❤️

Only one tiny point- our hotel room (garden room) didn’t have a key per se but a metal lock for the external wooden door. We expected a key to lock the sliding door within the garden patio which gave us direct access to our room. It took a while for my husband to relax about it but to be honest Beijing was so incredibly safe that we ended up forgetting about it by the second day!

My stay was too short

It seemed a lovely hotel in a hutong near the drum tower. A quiet street but really near the hustle and bustle of Beijing. We were not really there very long so can’t really comment about the hotel facilities but the room was great and the staff really helpful

A wonderful charm hidden in a Beijing Hutong

Fantastic location close to amazing shops. Loved that the staff supplied us with a map of the area and recommendations. The room was so cosy and neatly designed. The attached restaurants were excellent. Loooved coming in and smelling freshly baked bread in the morning. And the two cats were an extra treat! The room was quiet and warm (it was winter) and had good luggage storage under the stairs as well as hanging place for coats.

The only minor inconvenience I had was that the mattress type caused a bit of an issue since my partner is much heavier than I am so it would sink lower if he slept too close to me and I would roll towards him heh but it was absolutely fine if we slept a little further apart.

Hidden gem with delicious breakfast and perfect location.

Hidden gem in the old town, staff go out of their way to advise you and help you have a great experience in Beijing. Cats made it very homely.

Needs a little bit of maintenance but nothing to distract you from the lovely rooms.

Genuinely local experience, premier service

A little “hideout” place perfectly located in the center of the most happening area in Beijing. Offers a very different experience from the typical hotel suites. A chance to blend in with the locals, explore the hidden jewels (I.e. Puzzle, Beef noodles house nearby), and play with the hotel cats. Breakfast and coffee lovers are in luck, food is delicious.

Room is a bit small but very compact. Nothing unexpected.

Beautiful courtyard house in a perfect quiet central location with very friendly and helpful staff

We had a really wonderful stay at the Orchid. The hotel is beautiful - a stylishly restored courtyard house. What really made the stay special was 1) the incredibly helpful staff who were always there to assist with booking attractions and travel and to advise on how to get the most out of Beijing; and 2) the hotel's location in the quiet hutongs near the Drum tower, within walking distance of the Shichahai lakes, with lots of restaurants and shops nearby. Both the Western and Chinese breakfast options were excellent, and we really appreciated little touches like the welcome tea, the map with (excellent!) recommendations for restaurants nearby which was very useful, and the little gift on check out. We hope to visit Beijing again and would definitely stay at the Orchid.

An oasis of calm in Beijing

In a city that can occasionally be confusing, chaotic and contradictory, the Orchid shines out as an oasis of calm, set in the middle of the Hutong district. The staff were exceptional, the breakfasts were delicious and the sense of order and tranquility were greatly appreciated.

Staying at The Orchid made my first trip to Beijing a very special experience!

Loved the location in the old part of Beijing. This was a very different experience from being in a modern high rise hotel that one could experience in any large city. Walking through the narrow streets and alleyways was a walk back into history but also showed a way of life for the residents who live there today. The Orchid has upgraded it’s accommodations for guests while still retaining the feel of being in the hutong. The staff was personable, welcoming and very accommodating. Thank you to all! I loved my stay at The Orchid and hope to return!

Great. Will go back!

Breakfast options were excellent, totally enjoyed our 4 day breakfast! The rooms were clean and watch out for the 2 house cats + 1 neighbour cat trying to get into your room whenever they have a chance!

Location is great but it's on a vehicle restricted street. That means we had to alight at an adjacent street and push our luggage to the hotel. A small consideration if you are travelling with young children or elderly

The Essence of Elegance

Staying at The Orchid Hotel was an absolute delight. From the moment we stepped inside, we were captivated by the hotel's stunning ambiance. The Chinese-inspired decor is executed with an unparalleled elegance and refined style, making every corner feel like a curated art piece. The attention to minute details—from the delicate porcelain accents to the exquisite silk textiles—is truly remarkable.
Beyond the aesthetics, the standards of cleanliness were impeccable throughout the entire property. What truly sets this establishment apart, however, is the staff. Their incomparable kindness and genuine warmth made us feel valued and well-cared for, anticipating our needs before we even voiced them. This is more than a hotel; it is a serene, luxurious experience.

Great hotel for a first time stay in China

The hotel is set back down a little alleyway and has a welcoming entrance area. Our stay started off with a tea ceremony which was lovely. The room was spacious and comfortable. The staff were incredible. Great English, personable and helped us with the many questions we had. We organised a Great Wall trip with them to Jinshanling and had an incredible time.

Just do it & E N J O Y !

After an intense business trip of a week this pleasant and mindful place on a human scale was all I needed to get down to earth. You really end op in an oasis of peace and at the same time you are staying in a vibrant neighbourhood.
Very friendly, understanding and empathetic staff!
For the record: my business partner could unexpectedly not get his visa to travel to China and I had to cancel his room last minute, but just after the free cancellation time: they arranged a free cancellation however. Which I appreciate very much!
Nice clean 'make you feel home' rooms.
By the way, their restaurant Furongji serves delicious Cantonese dimsum!
Conclusion: I left for home with my batteries charged! I'll be back!

Excellent Hutong hotel

The staff was absolutely amazing! Helpful and super friendly 🫶
The hotel is beautiful and the room was large and comfy.
The location has a very old Beijing vibe - gorgeous!

The only thing the room was lacking was a place to hang your clothes. There was a closet, but the space was really low - anything longer than a sweater would touch the bottom and thus get wrinkled.
