Hotel Hoshinoya, Tokyo
Hoshinoya Tokyo is a remarkable “vertical ryokan” that masterfully brings the soul of a traditional Japanese inn into a 17-story skyscraper. Opened in 2016 in the Otemachi financial district, the hotel was designed by Azuma Architect & Associates to offer a serene sanctuary amidst the city’s corporate hustle. From the moment you enter and remove your shoes, you are enveloped in a space where modern architecture meets ancient ritual.
The design is deeply thoughtful, with tatami mats covering almost every surface, including corridors and elevators. Each floor functions as a self-contained ryokan, featuring a private ochanoma lounge where guests can relax, enjoy seasonal snacks, or read. A standout feature is the top-floor onsen, where mineral-rich waters are pumped from 1,500 meters underground, offering an open-air bath experience that feels worlds away from the urban grid below.
Visually, the hotel is distinct due to its exterior “kimono-inspired” aluminium lattice, which mimics traditional patterns and filters natural light into the rooms. The interior is equally mesmerizing, utilizing Japanese cypress, bamboo, and washi paper to create a minimalist, calming environment.
Located in the heart of Tokyo, the hotel is just steps away from the lush, expansive grounds of the Imperial Palace. It is also well-situated for those looking to explore local culture, with the atmospheric second-hand bookstores of Jimbocho and the iconic Tokyo Station nearby, making it a perfect base for blending deep tradition with modern convenience.
