Loved every moment - would recommend Hanare to everyone I know (but also want to keep it a secret!)

A unique modern twist to a full on Japanese experience

Just about everything. The attention to small details (the free candies in a specially made box) was incredible. The Japanese breakfast was a standout.

The room was tricky to heat. I never worked out how to work the heat pump. Also the common are was only open between 3pm and 8pm because it was shared with reception.

Exceptional

Wow! The walking tour with Momo was a lovely way to start our visit to Yanaka. She was so delightful and the area is quiet and quaint with a lot of great cafe's restaurants and stores. The humble aesthetic of Hanare is part of it's design and we loved all the thoughtful details and gifts. Hagiso Japanese breakfast was so delicious too! We'll be back.

A little oasis in central Tokyo

+ Welcoming and caring staff who make personalised recommendations + Very cosy wooden tatami room with high ceilings + Super quiet residential area, but still less than 10min from the Yamanote line + Easy bicycle rental and close to great parks + Fantastic breakfast (Japanese and western options, but Japanese is a must-try!) + Large shower room with high quality soaps + Free access to 3 different local bathhouses (sento)

I didn't dislike anything, but some things for others to be aware of: - Need to keep voices and noise very low while in the house - Stairs to upper floor are very steep and not recommended for those with mobility issues

My favourite place to stay in Tokyo!

I have stayed at Hanare before and always try to come back whenever I visit Tokyo. The premises are simplistic, yet beautiful to those with an appreciation for traditional architecture and decor. The staff are communicative and helpful, the breakfast is thoughtful and delicious, and the location is slightly tucked away yet still very accessible. My partner and I really enjoyed staying here, and would do so again in a heartbeat.

Exactly what we were looking for as a local place to stay in Tokyo

Traditional style Japanese rooms with tatami mats and futons, the staff were so friendly and helpful and the local area has a very neighbourhood feel, with lots of little shops and bakeries, and temples.

We loved it, but there is one shower between 5 rooms which you have to book a time slot for, so there is a slight hostel feel to it.

Fantastic guesthouse in a lovely neighbourhood

The staff were incredibly helpful and welcoming. We loved the neighbourhood, and tickets to the local bath houses are included in the price. Breakfast is also great!

There is no sound-proofing in the building, so peace and quiet is dependent on other guests being considerate.

My favorite hotel in Japan, incredibly warm and happy welcome from staff.

If you can get past the idea of sharing a bathroom (which by the way was always perfectly clean) you’ll love this place!

We loved the old charm of the Japanese home and the rooms. Little details of the property like leaving shoes outside and changing into slippers, “booking” shower slots on a magnetic board really brought some mindfulness to being. Momo and Nana are exceptionally hospitable and helpful. All their recommendations were awesome and the town of Taito is very quiet and friendly.

Wish we started here instead of Shibuya but it was a great place to end our stay in Tokyo

Simple clean and quiet with lovely staff. Beautiful old building. Interesting neighborhood- residential but near restaurants Lovely staff - Nana-San was very helpful with our plans to get home

Small steep stairs to room. But Nana-San moved all our luggage ( no small feat!) to our room when it was ready.

I had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The room was incredibly comfortable, super clean, and located in a peaceful neighborhood, though still very convenient thanks to the nearby metro station. The traditional touches throughout the hotel, as well as the delicious breakfast, made my stay even more enjoyable. Additionally, staying in a local area provided a great opportunity to experience daily life and get a glimpse into the local culture. The highlight of my stay, however, was definitely the hosts, Momo and Nana. They were absolutely amazing—extremely friendly, welcoming, and went out of their way to recommend excellent places to eat in the area. Their warmth and hospitality truly made the experience special. I highly recommend this hotel and will definitely stay here again next time I'm in the area!

Great place, lovely staff, very relaxing neighbourhood

Really nice Inn in the very quiet, dare I say bijou, neighburhood of Yanaka. Charming staff who gave us a very personal welcome and introduction to the area. The tearoom (where breakfast is served) is excellent, the rooms are a couple of hundred meters away. The room was comfortable and airy. The futon was very comfortable. Breakfast was lovely. You also get a free ticket to one of the nearby public baths (which was great) About a 10 minute walk to two different stations which give access to the ret of Tokyo. We enjoyed staying here and would recommend it.

Best option in Yanaka, if not all Tokyo

The welcome and consierge service were both exceptional. By far the best out of our 26 days’ stay in Japan. The facility itself is a tasteful mix of tradition and modernity with attention to detail. And the breakfast is a cherry on the cake - I loved the Japanese version, while the kids appreciated the sweet and toast options.

We absolutely loved staying at Hanare and would do so again in a heartbeat. We also loved visiting the nearby sentos.

We loved the Yanaka neighborhood and the friendly and helpful staff and amazing breakfasts!

for quiet days in Tokyo

This ‘ryokan’ is located in the charming, still quite undiscovered neighbourhood of Yanaka... 10 minutes from Nippori Station, where the train from Narita Airport arrives. It probably has one of the best breakfasts in Tokyo and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. Hanare is also very active in engaging the community of the area.

I would completely recommend staying at Hanare and exploring the public bath and Yanaka.

My family loved the concept and the experince of Hanare. The options for breakfast were very delicious - I especially liked the curated Japanese breakfast (with explanations about the provenance of the food); the tickets for the nearby public baths were a sensational added touch.

The rooms were a little on the small side but that was not really a downside since we knew the hotel was going to be in an old/restored traditional building.

Unforgettable

Great atmosphere of the place. Great concept. Very friendly, calm hotel staff who set you up for a great time on vacation. Very comfortable. The streets of this area are also very special, with a unique atmosphere. The breakfast is excellent and filling.

There are light signs of wear. The walls need to be lightly painted in the rooms and the tatami mats need to be cleaned or replaced. There are no more minuses.

Hanare is definitely a hidden gem, and the town it's nestled in is such a dream!

Beautiful traditional rooms, super comfy bed rolls, exceptionally clean private toilet and communal shower. The traditional breakfast at the Hagiso Cafe was delicious and such a nice addition! Hanare puts such thought into the entire experience, and this town is absolutely lovely.

There are multiple rooms in the building, so sometimes the other visitors would be a little loud upstairs. That noise was minimal overall though. We definitely would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Simply amazing! Everything you want Tokyo to be.

I cannot stop recommending this place! I booked Hanare for my very first stay in Japan. And I am sooo happy I did so! Th atmosphere of the place is very calm and relaxing. There are meditative sounds in the hallway and the place smells like wood! Perfect to wind down after a 20 h flight! I also don’t know what they put in the water but my hair and skin looked so healthy after the shower. The staff, both Momo and Nana are extremely friendly and helpful. I had a technical issue with booking and they resolved it all so quick and kind for me. Thank you once more for this!! Also they contacted me for a forgotten item which I picked up upon my later return to Tokyo. The neighbourhood is also simply amazing for a first introduction into the city and country. Momo recommended me a great sushi place where I ate the first evening. It felt like I was in a movie! I loved it so much I also came back after 3 weeks travelling Japan and had once again one of the best dinners of my stay! If I ever have the chance to come back I definitely want to book this again.

Little bit small to unpack your bags or reorganise.

Hanare is an interesting and lovely experiment in being embedded in a neighborhood. The staff are wonderful and friendly, and I'd like to give a shout-out to Momo-san and Nana-san for helping to make our stay very memorable. When we told Momo-san we could not make it for the (free) breakfast the next day, they provided us to iced coffee and scones to go as a just-in-case, which was very thoughtful. The rooms are small but clean and light-filled and although the toilet is outside the room, it is exclusively for one room's use. The shared bath was also clean and comfortable. The location is the best part of the accommodation as you get to explore not only Yanaka Ginza, but also the local sentos and the dining and coffee places. There are two train stations, both of which are short walks of less than 10 minutes, and one of them has the Skyliner to the airport. I would very much like to stay here again when I come back to Tokyo!

This was one of our favourite stays in Japan! The neighbourhood is such a gem and we loved the concept of making all of it our hotel, everything felt incredibly thoughtful and authentic. Anni and Momo were the warmest and sweetest staff ever, and we loved going to the sento before making our way back to our cozy and comfortable room. We stayed for one amazing night, and loved the location as well because it is away from the chaos of Tokyo but still easily accessible via the metro. Also breakfast is amazing.

There is a bit of a lingering smell in the rooms, which just comes with being in an old building. We kept our windows open for most of our stay. Also if you have a lot of things, navigating the smaller rooms can be tricky.

An escape from the busy parts of the city

Tranquil part of the city and great getaway after the exploring the busy parts of Tokyo. The village has everything you need and is a great base to explore. We received great help and advise from Momo and team, great traditional breakfast. The bedroom is very traditional and quite small but was really comfortable and overall an amazing experience for our first time in Tokyo.

Hospitality at its finest

From the moment we set foot into the charming enclave of Hanare in Nippori, Japan, it was clear we were in for an experience unlike any other. This isn't just a place to stay; it's a journey into the heart of Japanese hospitality, masterfully curated by the hotel and its remarkable manager, Momo. Momo is the personification of warmth and kindness. Her gentle demeanor and thoughtful approach to hospitality transform a simple stay into a heartfelt encounter. Upon arrival, we were greeted not just as guests, but as friends, invited to sit down for a relaxing session of tea and biscuits. It was a precursor to what would become a series of delightful experiences. One of the highlights of our stay was the neighborhood walking tour offered by Momo. This isn't just a tour; it's an immersion into the local culture and community, something I would recommend without hesitation. The ethos of Hanare, where the community becomes your hotel, is not only commendable but genuinely enriching. It offers a unique lens through which to experience Nippori, making the stay at Hanare unforgettable. While our room was cozy, especially with our suitcases, it was beautifully and thoughtfully designed. The attention to detail was evident, from the exceptional bathroom amenities to the comprehensive explanation provided by Momo on everything the hotel offers. From shower schedules to heater usage, to the thoughtful gift cards for local onsens and the delightful Hanare merchandise like pencils and notebooks, every aspect was designed to enhance our stay. The communal notebook for sharing neighborhood experiences was a beautiful touch, fostering a sense of community among guests. Momo's organization of breakfast reservations and orders for the joint cafe the next morning added a seamless charm to our experience, making it not just a stay but a story worth telling.
