The Jaffa Hotel, Tel Aviv

2 Louis Pasteur, Tel Aviv, 6803602, Israel (show on map)

The Jaffa Hotel is a masterclass in architectural preservation, located in the heart of ancient Jaffa. Housed within a beautifully restored 19th-century neo-Roman building that once served as the French Hospital, the hotel blends solemn historical grandeur with modern minimalism. Acclaimed British architect John Pawson and Israeli architect Rami Gil led the ten-year renovation, ensuring the structure’s sacred essence remained intact while adding a sleek, contemporary wing.

The property is a unique dialogue between eras. Guests can choose between the heritage wing, defined by soaring ceilings, arched windows, and original stained glass, or the modern wing, which offers a serene, minimalist aesthetic. One of the most striking features is the lobby, which incorporates remnants of a 13th-century Crusader bastion wall discovered during excavation, set against modern art pieces by Damien Hirst.

At the center of the hotel lies a lush, secluded courtyard, providing a quiet oasis from the bustling city. The hotel also pays homage to local culture through details like bespoke backgammon tables in the Sheshbesh lounge and the use of traditional Masharabiya patterned screens.

Its location is perfect for history lovers and explorers alike. You are steps away from the iconic Jaffa Clock Tower and the winding, narrow alleys of the Old City. The famous Jaffa Flea Market, known for its eclectic antiques and vibrant atmosphere, is right on your doorstep, while the Mediterranean coastline offers a stunning backdrop for a sunset stroll along the historic port.

Expert reviews

CN Traveler review:

“The historic Jaffa neighborhood has become a cachet of Tel Aviv cool, loaded with designer boutiques, cocktail bars, and creative locals inside its 4,000-year-old walls. It’s appropriate, then, that the hotel that shares its name should act as a microcosm of the area. Star architect John Pawson and his team spent 10 years creating an aesthetic within this former convent-turned-hospital that played to Jaffa’s old/new dichotomy.”

A beautiful hotel in an interesting and historic building. Just sad that the pool area closed at 6pm

Beautiful building, bedroom and pool area, most of the staff were amazing and made us feel special and welcome. Overall a great experience.

Thrown out of the pool area aggressively at 6pm sharp, we were relaxing and there was no where to go. The hotel loses the sun around 5.30pm. This seemed unnecessary. A member of pool food/drink staff unhelpful but the food and beverage manager was wonderful and made up for the 2 bad experiences magnificently. No evening meals in the hotel which we would have enjoyed but we subsequently learnt that the chef had left as the hotel has been closed due to the war. New staff apparently joining soon

A very good looking hotel, chill pool. Rooms can be improved and parking status is handled badly.

The hotel is amazingly designed, the rooms with the ocean view are breath taking, the hotel is really clean.

The walls of our rooms were so thin we could hear a normal conversation in the room next door, this got us waking up at 06:00 AM.

They tell you the parking costs money only at the end of the stay, the receptionist said it’s 80 nis per night, when we got to the exit the amount shown was 130 nis (we stayed for 1 night).

Saunas are separated.

Nice hotel, good location, very poor service

Location is great and the rooms are nice

We had a very poor experience following our stay. My wife forgot one dress shoe in the room when we left. We called the hotel asking about it within 3 hours but what followed were a few days of us chasing the hotel staff at all levels, not getting any answers, not having our calls returns and eventually being told that housekeeping three it away “not thinking anyone would want it”!

I also found the swimming pool to be crowded and there was no space to sit in the sun/found the room terms design an

Lovely building

The entrance gate to drive into the property is closed and when we a car pulls in they cannot drive in so the traffic behind builds up and the hooting from cars behind is extremely loud and unbearable - this happened a lot.

Nothing

Basically, if you want to pay a lot of money and get your wedding anniversary or any other important holiday ruined-come to this place.

Another beautiful week-end at the gorgeous Jaffa Hotel

The hotel itself is beautiful and a veritable landmark in Jaffa's Old City. It has been renovated mindfully and with style. The rooms are very spacious for Israeli standards nd beautifully furnished. The staff is absolutely wonderful, everywhere you go. From reception to the pool, they run around all day to make you feel at home. We were offered both an early check-in as well as a late check-out. Even when the security alarm went off at 2 am, there is a personal message to your hotel room and someone roaming the floors to make sure everyone is safe.

The only downside was the crazy number of people by the pool on Saturday, possibly outside-guests who pay a day's fee. So it gets pretty crowded on Shabbat.

Very beautiful hotel, located on a good area, good breakfast, too expensive.

Beautiful place, nice room with pool view, good breakfast.

Not a very good value for the price, we expected more from this kind of hotel.
Bed was old and not comfortable, we celebrated birthday and had ‘halwa’ as present - other hotels send at list battle of wine.
No Netflix on t.v.

If you can afford it, don't even hesitate to stay here, it's worth it!

The hotel’s design seamlessly blends modern elements with the charm of the historic building, creating a truly unique atmosphere. Both the indoor and outdoor facilities were impeccable, offering everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The sea view from our balcony was breathtaking, and we cherished every moment watching the sunset in the evening. It was a perfect setting for a relaxing getaway.

While the overall experience was excellent, we did have one issue with the valet service. It seems that the joystick controlling the mirrors was damaged when our car was returned to us, but unfortunately, we noticed it too late when arrived home. I recommend being cautious and thoroughly checking your car when retrieving it from valet.

Nice hotel - extremely low value for money

We had a terrible experience at the Jaffa hotel - from room functions that didn’t work and no one answered at front desk to help, through hotel staff who snuck in a bunch of their friends who completely ruined the swimming pool atmosphere with yelling and inappropriate language, with breakfast in which main dishes were not served and no one checked why although we asked, and of course - until a long email we wrote about our experience to which no one bothered to answer. I would have never paid the prices they charge if I knew I should expect a service level of a motel.

Irresponsible workers, very noisy. Totally overpriced and overrated!

Breakfast, location

1) Rude workers, especially vallet parking - laziest person I ever saw, waited for the car after check-out for 30 minutes and got 0 help with luggage.
2) Top management also so unprofessional, instead of simple “sorry” for an issue with technical worker , who carried out repairs with a drill early in the morning - first said it was not their staff. Oh yea, some guest of hotel decided to make renovation by 7am in the morning on Sunday? Zero responsibility, again.
3) Cheap rooms, zero noise reduction. Impossible to sleep if neighbour decide to watch TV. For sure your sleep will be interrupted in the morning by a vacuum cleaner cleaning the hallway.

Totally overpriced and overrated hotel. Was there twice (first time it was so loud marriage party
Inside hotel until late night, but I got discount for the stay and decided to gave the second chance for this hotel - it was a mistake), will never come again for sure.

Disappointed. Expected much more

The property is beautiful but I was very disappointed with alot of things that should’ve happened

First of all I stated beforehand that It was a birthday trip and asked for the room to be set up with a nice birthday welcome, i hot an email back stating that there is no problem and that they will set up something nice for us, that didn’t happen. In addition it took almost 2 hours for our luggage to get from the valet to our room, so we waited and asked again and again only to be dismissed by the staff. Disappointing, we lost time for us to be in the pool. In addition the outlet in the vanity room was not working so we had to do our hair with no mirror infront of us. The hot water in the room was not working in the shower, only in the tub. For the price we paid we expected everything to be outstanding. We left disappointed

It was amazing we had a great time and felt on a vacation even while being close to home.

I liked that it was not self service and there were a few options and not just one type of breakfast. It was a very traditional Israeli breakfast.

We didn't have good weather so it would have been nice if there were more options of things to do indoors, wine tasting maybe.

Great hotel, beautiful atmosphere, great service and amazing food

Great hotel, beautiful atmosphere, great service and amazing food. Before we arrived we already had quite some help from the concierge (Aviad) and during our stay from Ariela. They were very helpful with arranging transportation, booking padel courses and restaurants. The last night we had dinner at the Jaffe, which was really tasteful, maybe the best food we had in Tel Aviv that week.

Relatively expensive, but worth it
