The Inn At The Roman Forum, Rome

Via degli Ibernesi, 30, 00184 Roma RM, Italy (show on map)

The Inn at the Roman Forum is easily one of the most unique places to stay in Rome. Located on a quiet side street, this boutique hotel is built directly into a private palazzo that houses a 2,000-year-old subterranean ruin. Guests can actually explore these ancient remnants, which include a gallery of stone inscriptions, right beneath the hotel’s lobby.

The building itself is a fascinating blend of architectural eras. While the structure is centuries old, the interiors have been carefully curated to feel like a sophisticated, private residence. It is one of the only hotels in the city that offers such an intimate connection to the Roman Empire, as some suites overlook the actual Forum ruins, making breakfast on the rooftop terrace feel like stepping back in time.

Location-wise, it is unbeatable for history buffs. You are essentially steps away from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, meaning you can beat the massive tourist crowds by starting your sightseeing the moment you walk out the front door. It is also a short walk to the Capitoline Museums and the bustling Monti district.

Despite its ancient surroundings, the hotel doesn’t skimp on modern comforts. It offers a refined, peaceful sanctuary after a long day of navigating the Eternal City’s busy streets. With its combination of private luxury and genuine historical significance, staying here feels less like checking into a standard hotel and more like being a guest in a well-kept secret of Rome.

Expert reviews

Frommers review:

“The name doesn’t lie. This small hotel is tucked down a medieval lane, on the edge of Monti and with the forums of several Roman emperors as neighbors. Its midsized rooms are sumptuously decorated.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Rome.

Lonely Planet review:

“Hidden behind a discreet entrance in a quiet street near the Imperial Forums, this chic boutique hotel is pure gold. From the friendly welcome to the contemporary-styled rooms and panoramic roof terrace, it hits the jackpot.”

Great location, slightly dated small hotel set on a back street.

Amazing staff. Couldn’t be more helpful. Perfect location close to the Coliseum.

A bit dated. We had a spa bath that looked like it hadn’t worked in years - change it!! Shame because the room was very comfortable but in need of a little modernising.

Nice rooms but jacuzzi leaked on the floor.

No view from the window

It was wonderful and we would stay again and recommend it others.

A few things but the highlights are:

Rooms were so quaint and the bed/pillows were very comfortable

The rooftop was wonderful. We had breakfast every morning and the staff were professional, friendly. Great hospitality!

I can only think of one thing. Perhaps a slightly large sign with hotel name and address.

We walked past it three times when we arrived.

Excellent accommodations and great service at a reasonable price.

Great location. Clean. Jacuzzi tub worked great and was welcome at the end of long days. Breakfast was a full meal, very nice, served on the patio with a view by Rose and Hajib, both very friendly.

No complaints.

Gorgeous location in the heart of old Rome

Loved the location, could not have been more convenient.
We did not have breakfast at the property as a la carte put us off.

There an in the bathroom or window so it got very steamy very quickly with shower on. Probably really hard to manage in an old property though.

Lovely inn close to the Colosseum

Charming place to stay and close to the Forum and the Colosseum. The staff was very responsive--they helped with a reservation months in advance to our stay. We especially enjoyed Darius (sp) who served us drinks on the 4th floor terrace.

Electricity went off early one morning. I think I only got one warm/hot shower. It's a very old hotel so things like this are to be expected. It was also very warm so a cool shower felt very nice.

Staff was extremely helpful from recommendations for dinner to helping us secure last minute reservations to the coliseu

The rooftop and the hidden forum within!

We didn’t like our bathroom but it’s very European and part of the experience!

One of a kind boutique hotel near the Forum and Colloseum.

Beautiful and comfortable boutique hotel in an excellent location. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The underground ruins forming part of the hotel is a unique feature. I loved simply walking to the forum and the Colloseum.

Cute apartment in great location

Location was great. Room was part of an apartment separate from the lobby. Management responded immediately to a shower repair needed.

Not many facilities. Air conditioning was not very strong. Mattress was extremely uncomfortable, collapsed at the sides like it was very old.

A very enjoyable two nights! Felt truly pampered!!

Gorgeous off the beaten track hotel but right next to The forum and a few minutes walk to Colleseum. They upgraded us without us even asking into the Garden suite. Excellent air conditioning, jacuzzi tub and huge comfortable bed. Even had a high quality Bluetooth speaker for tunes in the room. Staff was exceptional! The hotel was built on some ruins which guests have access to and can have a cocktail in or a complimentary tiramisu. A very cold water fountain directly outside for refilling water bottles. Can’t say enough good things about it! Oh yeah, the staff was 🔥!!
