The Hoxton, Portland
Expert reviews
“From London-based Hoxton hoteliers comes this US outpost, right inside the Chinatown Gateway. An airy, Northwestern modernist aesthetic – clean lines, natural materials and mid-century accents – features throughout expansive communal areas and the 119 rooms, ranging in usual Hoxton sizes.”
“The Hoxton group has opened up in the hipster hot spot that is Portland, Oregon, to winning effect. Expect plenty of stylish communal areas for co-working and playing, and the group’s signature approach to living like a local while away. The Mexican restaurant and rooftop bar are both worth a visit in their own rights.”

All you need to know
While the term “hipster” may stir up debates, it’s undeniable that Shoreditch, the London neighborhood housing the original Hoxton hotel, shares some similarities with Portland, the heartland of non-mainstream culture in the Pacific Northwest.
The Hoxton, Portland, situated marginally beyond the Chinatown Gateway, adapts its traditional post-industrial style to fit a century-old edifice. However, it’s not a mere imitation of the London version.
Instead, the Hoxton group’s internal design team drew their creative ideas from the Northwest modernist movement of the 1960s and 1970s.
The rooms in this location stick to the brand’s straightforward naming convention, escalating from Shoebox and Snug to Cosy and Roomy. This honest approach sets up guests for a pleasant shock at how chic and sophisticated the rooms are, featuring dark wood decor and large, warehouse-like windows.
Additional luxury elements like Roberts radios, unique pieces of art, and comfortable beds further enhance the overall experience.

Classy, but loud...
The bed was comfy and I loved all the small details...
Well...to be honest it is loud...earplugs and the radio playing classical music were helpful, but I found myself wondering why they didn't invest in double pane windows...I have stayed in plenty of loud urban spaces in Europe in much less luxurious hotels that insulated their rooms from the noise much better...

A quiet and comfortable space to stay.
Stylish, very comfortable, with really helpful staff.
It can’t be helped, but the location felt a little unsafe.

It could have been better for the price that was paid. The room was definitely not worth the price. For such a small roo
Rooftop bar
Small room with no space for much of anything, the check in host was extremely unpleasant and made us feel like we were wrong for asking if room service was available at a certain time. The area was not very pleasant. No available parking other than having to pay per two hours, or a high rate for valet, or go to a lot to pay per day.

Fabulous
I just loved it! The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean, cozy and comfortable. The interior design of the hotel was generally very cool. Would definitely come back!
I could hear the traffic at night, but that's just how it is in city hotels I guess.

Fabulous
The gorgeous midcentury design of the common areas and the beautiful touches of design in the rooms, including a quiet radio playing when we checked in.

Overall, very charming hotel with great staff centrally located to a lot of great attractions.
Staff went above and beyond! Super informative and helpful and even made arrangements to keep our leftover food that didn’t fit in our room fridge in their fridge downstairs. Very delightful.
The photos on the website made the room look a little bigger then it was (and a little nicer) but it was still a very nice room for our needs. The main issue was the shower door situation. I know looks aesthetically pleasing to have no door but it just made for a messing shower experience and the floor mat was soaking wet after each shower.

Nice facility, kinda noisy bring ear plugs
The concierge was very nice and helpful, I liked that the beds for comfortable with modern touches and the bathroom shower had good water pressure
The location could be better, lots of dodgy people, also it’s quite noisy, the ac made this buzzing sound and some outside noise, room was a tad tight but I was solo, could be tight for a couple

Loved the decor, friendly staff, and vibe of the Hoxton.
We loved the decor, friendly staff, the roof top restaurant, and the breakfast bag option.
The location was close to the homeless area of the city. We are experienced city dwellers, so this was not too much of a problem for us.

Pleasant
Great decor/trendy design and coffee shop on-site. Central location.
Felt a bit overpriced. Received an accessibility room which didn’t really provide the full Hoxton experience I am used to.

Very good
Very nice hip hotel in downtown. Room was clean and comfortable and well appointed. Great shower and soft beds. Coffee shop was very good downstairs. Didn’t get to try the bar or restaurant.
Some swarms of flies were in the lobby around the bar for the two days we were there. Seemed they could have been removed but weren’t by the staff.

Smart and friendly hotel with some nice but underused spaces.
Good interior design, very friendly staff, always ready to help. Good bed and duvet, well designed bathroom. We were not told that room service is only performed by request and received a nice apology for this and a free beer. The speak easy bar in the basement was good and served excellent cocktails. But it would have been good if there had been access directly from the hotel, at least for hotel guests.
The most annoying issue was that windows, in a room with a view, had to remain closed as all the noisy air conditioners stood just outside on the roof of the older part of the hotel. The restaurant on the 9th floor was very accommodating when we arrived late and the food and service was good and friendly. But to use such a great location to house a restaurant “only serving” what I would describe as Mexican street food is a waste of good space. In a hotel of this standard one expects a much more interesting restaurant, French Bistro, Pacific Rim or even a high end steak house and in Oregon, as well a proper wine list. We had expected much more life in the cool lobby and bar area. It was unfortunately rather dead. With big windows to the street, it could have been a different experience- with the right crowd of course. Given what we saw late night in the streets around, maybe a difficult task? The interior definitely invites to more life and a good atmosphere.

We had a great time in Portland!
The Lobby as well the rooftop bar (this view!) were really impressive. It's a short walk to the train station and close to the river.
The hotel is pretty close to Chinatown.

Short convenient stay
Helpful and friendly staff. Liked overall vibe and decor. Shout out to Steven (front desk) was really helpful.
Not too crazy about the location. So many homeless in tents on the street made me nervous to walk around the neighborhood but this is nothing the hotel itself can change. First time in Portland, I realized it is a city wide problem.

it was cool

Cool Portland hotel
The Hoxton is a cool hotel with a few bars and a restaurant. The rooms are small but functional. The first room was really too small and right on the street so they quickly moved me to a different room that was much better.
The location is not amazing and parking is in a city lot a block away.

Nice hotel, small room
The room was clean, and all the services worked as promised. The shower was probably the best I have seen in a lot of time. Complementary canned water. The location was great, very close to the subway/tram lines and all the major attractions in Downtown Portland.
The room was quite small, far more than what I had expected. The area around the hotel feels less safe than what I had expected, since they are many homeless in the area around it, in the city center.

Gorgeous hotel with wonderful staff.
The Hoxton is a lovely hotel, with wonderful staff who are consistently kind, considerate and helpful [with a special shout out to the Manager who really put the hours in] and beautiful, stylish rooms and interiors.
Location is great, with lots of things in walking distance, however, Portland has a bad drugs problem at the moment and it made me wary to walk too far in Portland. It is, however, in easy distance to lots of great places and you are safe. Staff and security on the door also very vilgilent. Fruit on the breakfast menu would have been appreciated.,

location, way too noisy, busy streets.

Pleasant
It was a very comfortable stay with the best shower ever! Good view and good value.
I think it would be a great idea to have a water station for guests to fill up their water bottles - having to give my water bottle to an employee to walk out of sight to refill it is really just a hassle for both people involved! Having a water station would definitely solve that.

Fabulous
The team and staff were extremely nice and made sure we were treated well. It was my birthday and everyone from the door handlers, to the front desk and kitchen crew were respectful and kind!

Excellent hotel, sketchy location
The staff were friendly and provide any assistance requested, the room and linen were clean, the bed was more comfortable than expected, the shower worked well, the rooftop taqueria was excellent.
Currently Portland Chinatown has no street life and the streets are taken over by homeless and dirt, the only thing around seem to be strip clubs. Its not the hotel's fault, thought. Having said that, I didn't experience any scary situation.
