The Hoxton, Portland

15 NW 4TH Avenue, Portland, OR 97209, United States of America. (show on map)

The Hoxton, Portland, is a stylish urban retreat located in the heart of the historic Old Town. The building itself is a survivor with a rich backstory; originally constructed in 1906 as the Hotel Philip, it has served many roles over the decades, including a theatre and a single-room occupancy hotel known as The Grove. Today, it has been beautifully reimagined by the London-based studio Fettle, blending the building’s raw, industrial bones with a warm, welcoming aesthetic.

The hotel’s interiors draw deep inspiration from the Northwest Modernism movement of the 1960s. Inside, you will find a thoughtful mix of exposed concrete, reclaimed timber floors, and rich walnut paneling. Each of the 119 rooms is filled with local character, featuring ceramics by the Portland-based studio Clay Factor and artwork curated by local gallerist Upfor. It is designed to feel like a community hub, with a lobby that encourages both locals and visitors to hang out by the large central fireplace.

Dining is a major highlight, with three distinct spots within the hotel. You can grab a coffee at the lobby bar, enjoy casual Mexican-inspired fare at La Neta, or head to the rooftop for tacos and mezcal cocktails at Tope, which offers sweeping views of the city. For a more discreet experience, there is even a moody basement bar perfect for a late-night cocktail.

The location puts you steps away from the city’s best culture, including the iconic Powell’s City of Books and the beautiful Lan Su Chinese Garden. Whether you are exploring the local streetwear shops or taking a short trip to Forest Park, it serves as an excellent home base for your Portland adventures.

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“From London-based Hoxton hoteliers comes this US outpost, right inside the Chinatown Gateway. An airy, Northwestern modernist aesthetic – clean lines, natural materials and mid-century accents – features throughout expansive communal areas and the 119 rooms, ranging in usual Hoxton sizes.”

Telegraph review:

“The Hoxton group has opened up in the hipster hot spot that is Portland, Oregon, to winning effect. Expect plenty of stylish communal areas for co-working and playing, and the group’s signature approach to living like a local while away. The Mexican restaurant and rooftop bar are both worth a visit in their own rights.”

Loved our stay & would definitely come back!

Cute vibe! Employees were very welcoming! The bed was incredibly comfortable!

The shower could have been cleaner. The hallways also feel just a bit…. musty. That being said, the room was great!

Everything! This property is clean, comfy, and has great staff (Especially Lloyd the night time front desk guy) he went above and beyond for us.

Nothing negative to say.

Clean, lovely staff, and comfortable rooms.

Welcoming and kind staff. Exceptional service. They helped me enormously considering I was on crutches. Super accommodating and kind.

Would have liked room service to be more fully functional, and to have breakfast with room service. The hotel seemed to be operating with a skeleton staff, which is understandable these days. Coffee service in the room was fine as a holdover. Nevertheless the restaurants were both excellent, and the service was very good.

I would stay again, I’ve heard the Hoxton in Vienna is quite lovely

It was warm and welcoming, great lighting. The room size was great for a solo traveler.

Room was not as clean as imagined at first, kept finding smudges on tables, water marks from cups, dust.

Comfortable, quiet, amazing staff, and excellent bang for the buck.

This is excellent for solo travelers. The room was very nice and looked like it been updated recently. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was modern and spotless, and I liked that they included not just coffee but tea and bottled waters in the fridge for free where a lot of hotels charge for those items. Staff was fantastic. I also loved that you could buy an extra hour or two on your check out time for $10/hour. I would absolutely stay here again.

I didn't mind this at all, but I could see some people wishing the room was bigger. Might've been a little cramped in there with two people and a lot of luggage, but as a solo traveler I had no issue with it.

Quaint, in historic Portland, clean, comfortable, friendly staff.

Neighborhood still recovering from COVID shutdown

Overall a great place to stay but don’t have times throughout the day when nothing is open for food and drink.

It was a lovely hotel in terms of rooms and staff. In particular the staff were friendly and helpful. The beds were very comfortable.

I found that the coffee shop and the restaurant/bars were not always open. I got back from a long walk at just after 14.00. The ground floor restaurant was closed for service and the only thing available were snacks such as potato chips from reception until about 18.00 when the roof top restaurant opened.

A wonderful find for a business trip

A lovely boutique hotel with two restaurants, including a rooftop. The staff was fantastic and friendly. The smallish rooms were perfect with everything that you need.

It's a nice facility that is in a bad location

I didn't eat there, but we loved the complimentary water. Hotel had a nice atmosphere, clean, and staff was very friendlly

We were in a snug room which was tiny for 2 people and a dog so we changed rooms for the 2nd night we had room 212 and the ends of the bed are sticking out and we kept running into them. Really liked the hotel but being downtown there was to many homeless so we won't stay there again.

Comfortable and convenient

The staff was VERY accommodating in changing our rooms from very bad rooms to very good rooms quickly and without additional charges (see below). The rooms we had in the end were very comfortable, clean and quiet. The hotel was generally quite nice--seemed like it had been recently remodeled. The location was good in terms of proximity to all the best places to visit.

We were initially booked into very bad rooms that were super small and VERY noisy--not sure how they could fix that--maybe they could be more clear about the choices we were making when we booked. But a big part of the problem is the location of the hotel in the clubbing neighborhood, which is very loud on the weekends. The location is also problematic because there are so many homeless camped out around the hotel, which is quite unpleasant when coming and going, but they can't really fix that.

Very cute I would probably stay again.

The front desk staff was amazing. I love all the restaurants and how beautifully decorated it is, very clean inside. The rooms were very creative and cute although they were minimal.

Obviously, the outside is very loud. Valet is very expensive.

A bit mixed experience due to the over charged valet fees.

The staff were very professional and friendly and the facility was clean although the room was on the smaller side. :)

We stayed 2 different nights at this hotel (a week apart, one night each) and used the valet service for our car. They charged the correct fee on the first stay; however, they double-charged on the second stay and haven’t refunded the overcharged portion. Make sure they charge the correct amount!

Nice enough hotel. But enough lacking that I won’t be staying here again.

Good central location that is now not a good neighborhood to walk around in.

Most of the staff was great. As the saying goes, a bad apple will spoil the bunch. One employee was so unpleasant that it was enough for me to mention here. Only time I saw them smile was when they could answer “no” to a question I had.

Good hotel overall. Great food.

Delicious tacos, cocktails and good company from. Very friendly and interesting bar tender.

Downtown felt a little sketchy. I was particularly miffed about having to pay 60 bucks a day for parking as had chosen the hotel based on ‘parking’ being a facility. A bit more transparency would have been nice.

Lovely place to stay in a bubble…

Quiet and not a lot of people traffic or trouble

I was so surprised when we walked
Into the room cause it’s so small
That it feels clasterfobic and like being trapped ..

Great Hoxton city hotel.

Very nice typical Hoxton style and charm with great decor good stag and an excellent rooftop bar.

The location is a little shady, felt safe enough but maybe not for walking around at night.

Good hotel stay for exploring Portland.

I really like the historic features of the building with the modern decor and amenities. The buildings location was great for walking around even though there was an issue with homeless people surrounding the block it’s located on. The hotel did have security that let me in with my late arrival so that was reassuring.

The homeless people all around making it somewhat uneasy when wanting to walk around the neighborhood.

Great Hotel Stay Near Arcade and Restaurants

Great location, close to a lot of food options and Ground Kontrol arcade is one block away. Also the rooftop view is very nice at the hotel, not many places offer this.

Can't complain, selected a smaller room and it worked great for a single person traveling.
