Freehand Hotel, New York

I did like the location a lot. It’s well situated to the subway and from there it’s just a train or two away to whatever I wanted to see. The staff were really responsive to my request to move rooms after the first night and the new room was much better. The cafe on the first floor was delightful for breakfast and the staff there were as friendly as the hotel employees.

I had requested a quiet room when I made the booking. The first night I stayed in a room that was above a bar and the noise/music from the bar was so loud I couldn’t get to sleep until after 2:00 a.m. The room was also tiny with almost no room to put my suitcase anywhere. I get it’s Manhattan and this building used to house students, so maybe it was just my expectations that were misplaced.

The location was fabulous, the roof top bar was lovely and the room was very comfortable - oh and free water

Lack of detail when it came to cleaning - we ran out of tissues and it took two days for it to be replenished, our towels were taken away once without being replaced and when I called for towels they never arrived

Amazing location, spacious bathroom, kind staff, iron/steamer in the room, rooftop bar.

Outlet plugs next to one bed were not working. Could use more lights in the room.

a/c in room didn’t work, they attempted to fix but didn’t. brought in a wall unit but still didn’t really make it comfortable. have stayed before and the wear and tear is really starting to show. loose outlets, dust beside the beds. window blinds broken/hanging by a thread. mattresses and pillows are manageable but tough for 4+ day stays.

Love the decor especially the big room upstairs from the lobby. Perfect to lounge with a coffee and catch up on the news.

The location is fantastic. The common areas of the hotel are cute. Room was okay. Several elevators so usually no wait (only exception was during check out-- three elevators were so full we took stairs.) Room was quiet from both street noise and neighbors.

Some occasional awful smells from the bathroom -- maybe an issue with plumbing? Lots of tour groups using hotel. Hotel used to be an SRO and it still has that vibe.

Staff is so friendly and welcoming. Location is really good, you have everything you might need within 10-min of walk and for attractions, you have the metro within 3-4min walk to the hotel. The hotel has a nice ambience overall but too dark in the bathrooms.

The bed was not really comfortable, as the mattress wasn't even and it was old as you could feel the springs of the matress Street noises but you'd be good to go with a pair of earplugs The sink in the bathroom always changes for hot and cold, one day right sink gets you hot and the next day the left one..

The rooms are small but clean and comfortable. The community spaces (bars, lobby, sitting areas) are really nice and comfortable and fun to hang out in. Most of the people at the front desk were friendly and helpful.

The decor was interesting and funky. Very coherent design behind the interiors (all mid-century modern with old elements - very nice). All of the bars and restaurants were great. The staff were also very helpful and capable.

The bathroom in our room as not terribly functional and comfortable. It was small, that was not the real issue. There was no place to hang a hand towel. No place for your robe. A tiny shelf not big enough for an overnight bag. The toilet paper (NO spare roll in the room) was behind and above the toilet where it wasn't reachable. There was a vent in the shower - and no way to turn it on. The room temperature also was stubbornly unchangeable - the room badly needed a fan as a result. It's a cute and generally nice room, but there were some holes in the comfort for guests.

The hotel staff were really friendly and helpful. The hotel is located right near subway lines and not far from Empire State. Perfect base for our trip. The quirky bunk bed o we the main bed was also good!

There wasn’t anything not to like. The bathroom wasn’t the biggest, but what do you actually need for a city break!!

Staff was friendly, amenities including Comodo restaurant and various bars were fun, and the location is great.

The bathroom and especially the bathroom sink in the smaller rooms are way too small compared to other larger rooms.

The overall decor is great. However the lighting is so dim that I couldn’t see well enough in either the bathroom mirror or the full length which is hidden behind the bathroom door away from any light. My previous stay here didn’t have these issues

Loved the interior design and ambience in particular the lobby and mezzanine, it felt very authentic with a contemporary feel. The location was perfect and room arrangement cosy. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

No coffee in the room and breakfast options at the cafe were limited or running low by the time we got there. The music from roof top bar was a bit too loud for us.

Okay location but not ideal for the tourist attractions. Staff were great in person but I had a query before arrival and could never get a hold of anyone over the phone or on the online chat. Fantastic price made it worth it.

Street noises due to lack of soundproofing

The shower was great! Location also really good! About 20 min away from all the main points.

The rooms were relatively old and very small. Thus, I had some issues with my first room were the window was not closing and the noise was very uncomfortable. The mattress in my opinion should be changed as its was kind of uneven.

Amazing value for travelers who spend a lot of time exploring the city and less time sitting at the hotel. The location was perfect, we were able to access several metro stations or walk down a scenic avenue to reach our destination. The room was small but very clean and decorated nicely, for a short trip it was great. When we wanted to lounge at the hotel, the second floor common area was available and cute restaurants attached. The TV was nice for those few instances when we did want to relax in the room. The staff were really helpful and allowed us to store our bags with them before and after check out.

Bathroom was bordering too small, there was very little space to set anything down when getting ready. The door to the bathroom was a sliding pocket door which did not stay shut, so we opted to use the lobby bathroom instead on a few instances for more privacy. One of the elevators was broken when we visited, so around check-in times it was very busy. We found ourselves waiting with many other guests to use the elevator.

Room was well thought out and comfortable. It was clean. Liked that the windows let in fresh air. The shower was nice with beautiful tile work done well and the waterfall shower. Water heat and pressure was good too. Towels clean and lofty. The room was an efficient space, all around. Bed was comfortable and linens and pillows good quality. Decor was uplifting and of artistic design, clever. All needs met in the room and bathroom. It was a good space for two of us. The elevators ran very well. We never had to wait, even with all of the activity in the hotel. We had an event to attend, but we wish we could have eaten in the restaurant, Comodo; it was inviting. The hotel had a nice vibe. A little sixties like. The staff was attentive, accommodating, and they were well staffed.

Nothing that you can change really, but I think I expected a little more space in the room. I couldn’t wash my face in the sink due to design; better to just take a shower to wash my face. Still, it was a clean and attractive bathroom. All needs met there. Note that there’s probably always a line in the cafe. Don’t know really, but it was packed when we looked in and changed our minds due wait. So was the gallery and sitting areas. These aren’t bad things but just to be aware for ease of access or needs. I didn’t mind all of the company and activity. It’s great for the hotel, but we found it necessary to navigate a little.

The rooms are quite small. I was traveling alone, so this was fine. I would not go there if I needed to stay in the room with anyone else. Also, there are several basic amenities that just weren’t there. There wasn’t even a glass in the room. It was no closet, no drawers only a set of hooks to hang up clothes.

The hotel is located close to the UN HQ and the city center. The room was ok but tiny (TINY), ok for a 3 days work trip, definitely not if I would have been visit NY for a longer time as there was barely enough space to open my carry on! The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, Brandon at the desk was super nice and the big guy outside of the hotel never failed to catch me a cab and check on the driver before letting me get inside. Overall it was a good experience. The surrounding are are safe and well served, Starbucks is in front and there is a Bubba tea place just a block up so so good, subway close by and safe to walk back in the evening. Overall I would go back as a solo travel for a short work trip (or upgrade to a larger room if more than 1).

Dust under the bed - the hotel is clean overall but not spotless

The room was not clean when I arrived, I found shoes in the room from the last guest, the shower and toilet were not clean, the bottle of water in the fridge was open.

Really nice building and room - the room had big and very comfortable bed (if you like soft beds), and there was everything we needed (we were also given kettle on request and water too).

The AC sometimes smelled with some food from kitchen or something else (we were on 16th floor).

Liked the look of the hotel, the lobby, rooms and the bar were great.

Didn't like the fabric shower curtain. Staff weren't particularly friendly or helpful. Very noisy with lots of banging, particularly in the morning. Our room was next to a room named 'private' - assumed this was for staff and cleaners - from early morning there was banging of this door - no attempt to shut it without it slamming. The blinds were okay but the one next to the bed was slightly broken and let a lot of light in. These things combined meant that it was not possible to sleep in past 8-8.30am.

The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and we were not bothered by any street noise. The location is perfect.

The room was microscopically small. They failed to provide some basic necessities such as a cup in the bathroom for brushing your teeth or a box of tissues. The doors at the front entrance are very heavy and difficult to open, especially when you have luggage; the hotel ought to provide a staff person to open the doors or install doors that open automatically. Without those features, I'm not sure they comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
