The Celestine, New Orleans
The Celestine is a stunning boutique hotel nestled in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter. Housed in a historic building dating back to 1791, the property served as the former residence of Antoine Amédée Peychaud, the visionary pharmacist who created Peychaud’s Bitters. The hotel pays homage to this local legend through its onsite cocktail bar, Peychaud’s, where guests can enjoy classic drinks in a lush, verdant courtyard.
Designed by Sara Ruffin Costello, the interiors masterfully blend French, Spanish, and Afro-Caribbean influences with 1950s glamour. With only 14 uniquely appointed rooms, the hotel feels like an intimate, curated home. Many of these rooms feature four-poster beds, custom linens, and balconies overlooking the vibrant Toulouse Street or the hotel’s tranquil inner courtyard, which is said to have inspired writers like Tennessee Williams.
A unique feature for cocktail enthusiasts is the personalized, in-room wet bar. Each is equipped with the tools and ingredients needed to craft your own signature drink, inspired by the city’s rich mixology heritage. The space balances a sense of seclusion with the city’s high energy, acting as a peaceful oasis despite being just steps from the revelry of Bourbon Street.
Beyond the hotel, you are perfectly positioned to explore the city’s soul. Iconic landmarks like Jackson Square and the historic Preservation Hall are just a short walk away. Whether you are wandering through the nearby French Market or soaking in the local jazz scene, The Celestine offers a sophisticated base for experiencing the authentic magic of New Orleans.
Expert reviews
“A bona fide local experience, The Celestine feels like sleeping at an old friend’s house—complete with great art, intimate service and the colorful personality you’d expect from a 1791 dwelling.”
“No two rooms are the same in this building, which inherited some inevitable quirkiness of a French Quarter townhouse (uneven floors, window units instead of central air) but exudes sophistication and elegance.”
“When playwright Tennessee Williams was writing his Pulitzer Award–winning play A Streetcar Named Desire, he was swept up in the setting of New Orleans’ French Quarters, often penning those famous words from a courtyard on Toulouse Street. Now that exact building is reinventing itself as a delightful 10-room boutique hotel, The Celestine.”
