Audubon Cottages, New Orleans
The Audubon Cottages are a rare, historic treasure tucked away on Dauphine Street in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter. Built shortly after the great fires of the late 18th century, these seven standalone cottages offer an intimate, private escape from the city’s usual hustle. They are best known for once being the residence of famed naturalist John James Audubon, who lived in Cottage One during the winter of 1821 and used Cottage Seven as his studio while working on his masterpiece, Birds of America.
The property is a masterclass in atmospheric charm, featuring lush, secluded courtyards and what is widely considered the oldest hotel pool in the French Quarter. The heated saltwater pool serves as the centerpiece for the cottages, surrounded by greenery and wrought-iron loungers. Guests are treated to personalized butler service and nature-inspired décor, with each suite honoring Audubon’s legacy through limited-edition prints of his iconic bird illustrations.
Beyond its physical beauty, the hotel is steeped in local lore, with many guests reporting friendly ghostly encounters—most notably a soldier often seen humming in Cottage Four. The cottages have also long been a favorite hideaway for celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor, who reportedly stayed in Cottage Three on numerous visits.
Location-wise, you are perfectly positioned. While you are just one block from the famous bars and jazz clubs of Bourbon Street, you are also steps away from the historic beauty of Jackson Square and the iconic St. Louis Cathedral.
Expert reviews
“At the Audubon Cottages, you get to sleep in one of seven immaculately restored historical buildings, ranging from two-bedroom suites with private courtyards and walk-in showers to a former storage shed once used as a studio by John James Audubon. You’ll have your own saltwater pool, attentive staff and the satisfaction of having privacy and quiet within the Quarter.”
“An unmarked gate and leaf-canopied pathway lead to seven ultra-private one- and two-bedroom cottages with a large courtyard (some private, some shared). Each is gracefully but not overly antiqued amid gorgeous brick walls and gleaming hardwood floors.”

Beautiful property and excellent staff experience in the heart of the French Quarter.
The location was phenomenal and the staff couldn't have been nicer. Loved the historic atmosphere and tranquil setting in the middle of it all. Would love to come back when it's a little warmer/greener.
The only thing that could have been better is that we had to take super short showers because we ran out of hot water quickly.

This was a perfect New Orleans cottage with character.
This property was a like a secret garden hidden behind a plain, but pretty facade in the French Quarter. The location was great. The room was beautiful, unique, and very clean. The staff was friendly and wonderful. I will definitely come back next time I'm in NOLA.
The shower had no door, so it was hard not to get water on the floor.

An absolute gem.
The location was amazing. It is right in the middle of the quarter, yet away from the noise of Bourbon Street (which was still nearby!). Close to many restaurants and museums and the trolley leading out to the Garden District, and easy to get to from the airport. The room was immaculate and the cottage property was charming. I cannot see us staying anywhere else in the Quarter from now on.
Nothing. Everything was great.

Refuge from Bourbon Street
This was our third time to stay at the cottages so clearly it has become our go-to place in the French Quarter. Highly recommend.. It is a refuge from the craziness of Bourbon Street.
Pool was out of commission for a day but they got it fixed. Pillows are a little firm and would appreciate some softer options.

Beautiful oasis in busy French quarter
The location was amazing. Close to all French quarter activities but in a small oasis that felt a world away from the craziness. Anthony, the butler was so awesome and helpful and the housekeeping staff was so sweet.
On the Saturday night, it was very loud. The cars and music kept me up at night. The bass and mufflers were the worst.

The perfect hidden oasis.
It’s super challenging not to gate keep this hidden gem! The oldest pool in NOLA with gorgeous masonry and salt water, was the highlight. I swam for hrs!
Perhaps the one downside is the ability to hear the mayhem of the French Quarter. With this being so close to Bourbon Street. If traveling with children, bring a sound machine and it will be fine! The other thing I didn’t love was having to park offsite. But it is very close. And when I saw this gorgeous property, it was completely redeemed. Worth mentioning, so you can prepare.
