Hotel Peter and Paul, New Orleans

2317 Burgundy Street, New Orleans, LA 70117, United States of America (show on map)

Hotel Peter and Paul in New Orleans is a truly unique destination, occupying a transformed city block that once housed a Catholic church, schoolhouse, rectory, and convent. Meticulously restored over four years by ASH NYC and local firm studioWTA, the hotel preserves the soulful history of these 19th-century buildings while offering a stylish, boutique retreat.

The architecture is a major highlight, with the centerpiece being the magnificent Sts. Peter and Paul church. Designed by the renowned 19th-century architect Henry Howard, the deconsecrated space now serves as a breathtaking venue for community events, yoga, and performances. Every guest room is distinct, featuring a blend of European-inspired antiques, custom furniture, and playful design details—like gingham patterns and trompe l’oeil murals—that honor the property’s storied past.

A favorite among locals and visitors alike is The Elysian Bar, located in the former rectory. It has earned national acclaim for its craft cocktails and intimate, jewel-box atmosphere, serving as the social hub of the campus. The hotel even offers guests the chance to listen to recorded stories from former parishioners, adding a deep, personal layer to the experience of staying there.

Located in the vibrant Faubourg Marigny neighborhood, the hotel is perfectly positioned for explorers. You are just a short walk from the world-famous live music clubs of Frenchmen Street and the historic charm of the French Quarter. Whether you’re wandering the nearby Mississippi riverfront or enjoying the local jazz scene, this hotel provides a peaceful, historic sanctuary in the heart of the city.

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“This lovely hotel has taken over the grounds of the former Sts Peter and Paul Catholic church and school. The rooms are a study in elegant historical understatement, with muted linens, hand-painted tiles, canopied beds and highly individualized touches.”

Telegraph review:

“This evocative and discreet conversion has transformed a church and its buildings into one of the few hotel options in the Marigny neighbourhood. The result is a mix of bucolic and ecclesiastical chic in memorable surroundings, with an impressive food and beverage offering plus tranquil public spaces to boot.”

Would not recommend. Will not return

Furnishings cheap and uncomfortable especially considering the very expensive price point. Decor drab. Staff indifferent and not particularly helpful. Not really a hotel but rather an event venue that happens to rent rooms

Beautiful hotel that didn’t seem private with all of the events they had booked there.

We loved the property and the location and staff.

We were there over a weekend and it seemed like every time we stepped out of the room we were stepping into someone else’s wedding. Never even got to take a peak inside the chapel because it was always occupied. So for such a high priced room rate it didn’t feel private so at all staying there.

A gem, don't delay in booking to stay here

The location and the food in the restaurant were amazing. the staff at the restaurant could not do enough for you.

Lack of storage in the room to put anything away but fine for short trips.

Incredible stay in NOLA!

Loved, loved the history of the property. Gorgeous property. The restaurant and bar was also phenomenal. The location was amazing due to our main objective was to hear good music and watch the sugar bowl. Due to visiting NOLA many times, we didn’t care much about being close to Bourbon Street.

Even though the furniture was pretty well matched to the theme of the property, the seating in our room was not comfortable. The couch was not one to lay around and watch tv. We were there for 4 days, and we wanted to relax in NYE during the day to watch bowl games.

“An unforgettable stay combining comfort, beauty, and thoughtful discussions on resilience and sustainability.”

“Amazing experience! The property was stunning, and the staff, Dixie and Ajumoke, provided insightful feedback on community resilience and sustainability, which added a meaningful layer to my stay.”

“Nothing, everything was perfect.”

Lovely and restful place to stay

Friendly and helpful staff, lovely restaurant with fabulous cocktails and locally inspired menu. The use of space in the room I had was good and although it was small it didn't feel cramped, and was sympathetically done to reflect the history of the buildings.

Slightly further from the city than I realised, but the tram or bus are two blocks away and it's about a 40 minute walk if you like walking (which I do) so that's an observation, not a complaint.

Perfect for a couple!

Absolutely beautiful hotel! Everyone was so helpful and friendly. Our room was very clean, and they even got us into our room a little earlier than our check-in time. The bathroom was really relaxing, and the tub was a perfect way to end the night after being out in the heat all day. The coffee shop and bar are beautiful and the staff were so nice and chill. Get a drink and take walk around the property to explore all the history of the building. Overall amazing experience!

Beautiful luxury boutique hotel - pricey but worth it!

Utterly beautiful hotel. Comfortable, peaceful. Easy walking distances. Excellent staff who were always happy to help.

There was a boil advisory for the water in New Orleans while we were there (ie couldn’t drink the tap water), but the staff were able to supply plenty of safe bottled water at no extra cost whenever we asked.

Beautiful renovated church in a great part of the city!

The property is beautiful and well maintained, the staff was all super friendly and helpful. We’ll definitely be staying here again next time we come to town. Loved that there was private parking and the onsite cafe and restaurant were wonderful.

Amazing experience that is not to be missed. So good it was holy smokes.

Amazing generous staff. Very attentive to my pet and understanding. Great location in Marigny and beautiful neighborhood with excellent food and bar options nearby. My room was stunning.

Housekeeping knocking on the door at 9 am and especially on my checkout day when the checkout time is 11 am. When people are on vacation, they want rest. In NOLA, people are up late. It's not cool to have a housekeeping check at 9 am in this particular city but maybe ever. Housekeeping should be given a list of those rooms checking out and not knock on that room until the front desk informs them that the guest has checked out. I used to work in a hotel and know that can be done. :)

A beautiful building in a perfect location.

Beautiful hotel in historic building. Great location. Very elegant.

Lack of accessible social area- you have to ‘find’ a place to sit rather than be welcomed by a friendly space.

Delightful, beautiful, and kind

The beautiful interiors, fabrics, furniture, tiles, and immense attention to detail. I loved the water fountain for drinking water too.

We would like room service (especially for breakfast!) and a safe in the room.

Wonderful stay - the place to be in NOLA!

Great location, with the cutest decor. Loved everything about this hotel and would recommend to anyone staying in New Orleans. Beautiful, comfortable, unique, with great attention to detail.
Also had a couple of meals at the Elysian bar, which was again super stylish and inviting.

Just wish the robes were more affordable - would have bought some!

Like staying at a spa without the water!

we liked the overall ambience- there was a feeling of calm. it was a stones throw to everything. walking to Canal Street took a little longer but w e we’re just interested in the older part of New Orleans.

We thought there should have been tea and a kettle available for non-American visitors. We don’t drink coffee but essentially that is a first world problem!

We had a great time overall and just went out to eat including breakfast

Beautiful place . Very clean and comfortable .

Apart from the tiny takeaway coffee place downstairs there isn't any breakfast available and you can't really sit around downstairs relaxing or whatever without ordering food as it's a restaurant

Warm, inviting, and attention to detail.

Beautiful, attentive, and unique - never have seen the level of detail down to the ice bucket and room key to stay within the aesthetic. Truly an experience worth having.

A ceiling fan (can be cute)

Reflects New Orleans perfectly...Hotel Peter and Paul has history, charm and personality

A peaceful retreat in the madness of New Orleans. The room was very well decorated, well equipped (they had thought of everything down too relevant reading materiall) and the bed was very comfortable. The staff were both welcoming and helpful.

There was nothing not to like

The entire hotel concept is executed so incredibly well—from the graphics and typeface chosen for the arrival pamphlets

The aesthetic choices throughout are charming and sophisticated, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. It’s so close to great restaurants and vibey Frenchman street.

There is not fitness center on the premises (even though they do offer offsite options)

A great stay in New Orleans. I hope that one day we will return.

The hotel was elegant and peaceful. Everything we needed was provided in our comfortable room. The hotel decor was beautiful and calming. The hotel was designed in a well thought out and beautiful way. Polite, helpful unobtrusive staff. We felt like we had found a home away from home.

I have been to New Orleans many times,I would definitely stay here again.

Breakfast is available on the premises. The cappacinos were served topped with a heart design and a rose design. The eggs benedict was flavorful and fulfilling. The area was very quiet, our balcony faced the rear of the Convent. Parking was next to the hotel which made trips to the car quick and easy. A restaurant on the corner, Who Dat Coffee shop had a creative selections of drinks and excellent menu selection. The Hotel was a short walk to the Jazz clubs, like the Spotted Cat which was also convenient, eventhough Ubering everywhere was easy and inexpensive. All of the staff were attentive and friendly. I arrived late and they called me to verify my arrival time and instructed me on where to go to check in.

The perfume aroma was a bit intense for me in the room as the housecleaning staff were overzealous with making the room smell nice. It was a pleasant smell, just a bit strong and the hotel service manager said they would address it with the staff so the aroma is less intense.
