Auberge de la Fontaine, Montreal

1301 Rue Rachel E, Montréal, QC H2J 2K1, Canada (show on map)

Auberge de la Fontaine is a delightful, family-run boutique hotel nestled in the heart of Montreal’s trendy Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood. With over 35 years of history, the property is uniquely composed of two beautifully renovated historic townhouses, offering an intimate and authentic experience that feels far more personal than a standard city hotel.

The hotel’s standout feature is its prime location directly facing Parc La Fontaine, the city’s third-largest park. This green sanctuary offers guests immediate access to walking paths, serene lakes, and, in the winter, a charming outdoor skating rink. The lobby itself is designed to showcase these surroundings, featuring large windows that provide calming views of the park’s lush scenery.

Inside, the inn houses 21 individually decorated rooms that emphasize comfort and classic style. While it retains the charm of a historic stone house, the interiors have been updated to include modern amenities, such as air-conditioning and soundproofed windows. Some of the most sought-after suites even include private balconies or whirlpool tubs, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.

The Plateau district is famous for its creative spirit and local culture. Guests are within a short walk of bustling streets like Mont-Royal Avenue and Saint Denis, which are packed with independent boutiques, theaters, and some of the city’s most beloved restaurants.

For those wanting to venture further, the hotel serves as an excellent base for visiting major cultural landmarks, including the nearby Quartier des Spectacles and the various museums found in the downtown core.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“Situated in the hip Plateau neighborhood, the 21-room Auberge de la Fontaine lies across the street from leafy Parc La Fontaine — home to an outdoor skating rink — and down the street from Lab cocktail bar. Certain rooms have whirlpool baths.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Montreal.

Telegraph review:

“The Auberge de La Fontaine is uphill from downtown on the Plateau, with its fun restaurants, shops and an 86-acre park. The 21 rooms in two adjoining 19th-century buildings are comfy, clean and attractively furnished. Even better, the very reasonable prices include a fulsome breakfast.”

We will be back!

We love the location on the park, and that there are many restaurants , shops and cafés close by. It is only a moderate walk to Mount Royal. Our bed which was a king suite was incredibly comfortable.. The room is clean, plenty of towels and having a refrigerator and coffee maker was helpful. The staff was very helpful and available when needed. We were lucky to end up securing a parking spot behind the building. If that is not available, they offer you parking passes on the street. We stay here every time we come to Montreal and we’ve stayed in different areas. They all have their own character, but for us the plateau is good for us.

They do need an update to their shower situation. It functions well lots of hot water, but there is a lot of caulking that seems to be hiding cracks and deteriorating seals, and the shower curtain has a hard time staying in place and can cause leaking. The bathroom itself ,the sink and toilet and the floor are just fine.

Feels like a cosy writer’s hole to hide from the world

Beautiful architecture. Close to La Fontaine park. In a posh area where it’s safe to walk in the evening, with a few choice stores and eateries within walking distance. Friendly, courteous, professional, charismatic staff who make this feel almost like a scene out of some old novels. Compact rooms, everything you need. Breakfast was a great deal better than I expected, a pleasant surprise. Quiet, despite the many rooms. Good tea selection. Easy check-in and check-out. Good hygiene. Corner room facing the streets on both sides — great view.

Can’t make hot water in room. While you CAN collect hot water from the communal cafe, would still be a lot easier to have water-boiling machine in room.

The stairs are REAL. Do talk with the staff first if you have a lot of luggage. Ground floor cannot always be arranged.

Laundry.

No power sockets near the bed.

It was a treat!

Room was quiet, clean, comfortable, attractive & big. Lounge areas were attractive & welcoming. Staff was welcoming & made checking in & out easy. Emails in advance of stay were informative. Very good value for money. Lovely neighbourhood within walking distance of downtown and Mile End

Tiny detail! Wanted to use the shampoo, conditioner & body wash but couldn’t get the fluids to flow out of bottle. Strange

Cozy auberge on the park in Le Plateau neighbourhood.

Room was warm and cozy, and quiet. Great location in Le Plateau neighbourhood - all that we wanted to do was so walkable, so we left our car parked the whole time. Friendly accommodating staff and cozy reception lounge. We'd stay again, for sure.

We had a lovely time. Would have absolutely stayed longer if we could have.

We were pleasantly surprised at how great our room was. It was very affordable and exactly what we needed as we were only in town for less than 24 hours. The room was very clean and the decor was quite charming.

Parking in the neigbourhood was a bit difficult. But we got lucky finding a spot.

It was very clean, welcoming and convenient. They allowed me to store my luggage for the day after I’d checked out. The

It allowed me to check in after a late flight in the middle of the night.

Stairs were a bit much for me, since I’m a senior. I recommend letting people know.

A lovely weekend in trendy Montreal

The location is incredible; it’s in the bougie neighborhood of Montreal but far away from commercial hotels. The bed was super comfortable and the decor was really tasteful and tidy; everything about the place made our stay relaxing.

We were lucky to get one of the free parking spots, but it could be stressful in these residential neighborhoods to try and figure out parking.

Great accommodation and staff, with the most serene park right opposite. Totally recommend.

Pantry, amazing staff, and best of all it is beside Parc de la Fontaine

Heating in the bathroom was sporadic on one of the days

Perfect location, nice room, friendly staff.

Location, location, location. Overlooking Parc Lafontaine, we could walk to brunch or along all the neighborhood streets. Love the area. Nice room! Tiny but it had everything we needed.

Not the hotel's fault at all but at the moment there's massive construction right outside. It shook the whole room.
The window's are the old wooden mechanism - they could use a bit of maintenance so they can open and close easily.

The location was excellent. Walking distance to parks, restaurants, shops and easy access to bus. The room and property were clean and comfortable.

The TV is all wifi…took us a while to figure it out.

A delightful stay in Montreal.

The location was excellent for our purpose, the suite was very quiet, there were many good and varied breakfast options and the staff were, without exception, charming and helpful. Will be back next time we visit Montreal.

Can't think of anything.

Lovely, no hassle and quaint.

The staff was great. I loved the location because it was in a neighborhood as opposed to the touristy Old Town. We were able to walk to restaurants and shops. There is a beautiful park across the street that we did not walk through, but would love to the next time that we visit. The hotel is small and clean. It reminds me of hotels where I have stayed when traveling through Europe.

The front room was a little noisy the first night that we were there. Because we were on the top floor, it was a bit stuffy and when we opened the windows you could hear passersby and traffic. However, when the windows remained closed, it was super quiet.

Very restful and comfortable and clean.

Very quiet, hospitable. Lively neighborhood. Clear and very comfortable. Jacuzzi.

Some might prefer a more central location, but adjacency to a beautiful park and not far from a wide-range of small shops and restaurants was a bonus

Charming hotel stay.

Comfortable bed, friendly staff who were able to accommodate our early check in. Good and extensive breakfast. Location was good. They had parking behind the hotel. The hotel has a nice charm.

Our room was on the third floor which meant a lot of stair climbing as there is no elevator. If mobility is an issue ask for a room on a lower floor.

Wonderful staff, great location, active neighborhood, many eating places.

The staff, and the super helpful receptionist, were very welcoming. The room was very clean and comfortable.

The narrow stairs to the too floor can be challenging for some with large luggage. It was fine fir my small roller case.

Characteristic and unique auberge parkside in the city

Unique urban neighborhood auberge, much more interesting than staying in a chain hotel. Room and bed are comfortable. Lots of places to dine, and staff offer recommendations. Parc Lafontaine across the street is lovely.

Even understanding that there are no elevators, the turns and half-steps on stairs are difficult for older or infirm travelers. Constant construction (though this is true in much of Montréal) makes street access a bit difficult.
