Mama Shelter Hotel, Los Angeles

Mama’s Shelter was in a perfect location, within walking distance of the conference I was attending. The staff were very polite and friendly. They heard my request for a quiet room and I was completely satisfied. I would’ve liked to have stayed longer.

It was a bit expensive. The Bar was noisy, but it was happy hour, so I guess that’s to be expected. I would have also appreciated a few other options for breakfast. I paid on the last day to have yogurt over my choices of eggs and bacon or pancakes.

The rooms were eclectic and fun with bright cheerful decor, unusual posters, frames and lamp shades. The bed was large and comfortable. The bathroom was large and clean, but the basin was a strange shape and water messed easily on to the floor. Our room was on the 5th floor which we were happy about considering the ground floor/lobby/restaurant area transforms into a nightclub and bar area from 9pm. luckily, the noise stopped just after 1am. The hotel has a lovely rooftop bar area with good views of Hollywood and comfortable chairs to relax in.

Unfortunately during our check out at the front desk at 5am, the staff member assisting us was rude, arrogant and wouldn't allow us to finish a sentence. We had arranged with another staff member the previous evening to effect a refund on our account, which was not reflecting. The staff member refused to acknowledge our information and kept saying that we needed to pay in full. When we tried to explain to her what had happened, she stood up and walked away and then spent 20 minutes telling the security man how badly she had been treated and that she would not deal with customers like us. we left upset and will not return or recommend the hotel.

Do not recommend if you are a bit older and dont want loud music singing you to sleep, but if u do this is the place for u, party all night !!!

great bed, ok price/value for LA, good roof top bar and 3-4 bars/resturants in house - didnt try this time.

if a drink is 16.- but you end paying 23.- without tips... thats just not OK. I feel the US pricing system is non transparent. I dont care how much tax the owner pays - i just wanna know how much I am paying.

The room was a decent size. It was affordable for the night we needed a hotel for an event.

Location was convenient for my purposes and the air conditioning was strong, which was great during a particularly hot August visit. The room was a good size for one traveler, and despite being right under the bar, it was not excessively loud.

The bathroom was lacking — minimal products came with the place, which seems off for what is marketed as a luxury hotel. Similarly, no room service was available, which was difficult after a long day of work commitments. Also, there were creepy superhero masks used as lampshades near the bed which was not great for me.

Great hotel. Very friendly staff, comfortable room (though we would have liked to be able to turn off the LED lights). The rooftop bar/restaurant was fun. Again, the staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive.

The location was a bit seedy. Probably a different story if you had a car. Public transport not desirable and the cost of Ubers is definitely something to consider. Also, after 3 weeks in the USA, this was the first hotel that didn't offer toiletries in the bathroom, or even glasses in the room to have a drink of water, let alone tea or coffee.

Rooms decorated nicely in music and movie themes, comfy bed, ample power outlets in bathroom and near bed, plenty of table/shelf space (no drawers or much hanging space though), good breakfast options and big rooftop bar.

Popular rooftop bar so quite often you were battling queues of bar customers to get to the lifts in the small reception area. Close to transport and tourist attractions but Hollywood location can be sketchy sometimes.

Good location. We knew it was going to be super noisy from the previous review so that wasn’t an issue.

There was a light in our room that was placed real silly and we kept hitting our heads on it.

The bathroom was very strange without a tub or shower door. Never seen anything like it. Very caught off guard and confused by it.

Centrally located which makes going into work super easy! The staff were SO so good, they always remembered me and everyone was so kind.

The carpets- guys, you have GOT to get the stains sorted, it’s gross.

hotel has a roof and we decided to have some drink at our last night bu we learned that there was a private party that night and we are not allowed to go up😡our last night was terrible so we stayed at oyr room all night😬how is it possible!!!!!!!so do not advertise that hotel has a roof and roof bar if we are not able to use.last night was bed.I do not know how was is and whether they had parties on the other nights becouse I was nıt at tha hotel.so I used no facilities at the hotel.

Helpful & courteous staff, walking distance to The Hollywood Walk of Fame & The Sunset Boulevard. Great eating options nearby. Clean room and an overall relaxed atmosphere in the Hotel.

Rooms are a little small as are the bathrooms.

Clean spacious rooms and the beds were really very good. The restaurant on the ground floor is nice, good options, all very fresh, good healthy choices.

Later in the day they had this weird thing going on where they had someone basically blocking the access to the elevator to go to your room. I think it's because they try to control the access to the rooftop, but the way they handle it towards guests that stay in the hotel could be more friendly. We had a room on the top floor and there is a lot (!) of noise from the rooftop and it goes on quite late. There does not seem to be any noise canceling insulation in that building. I would stay again, but definitely demand a room away from that rooftop.

A great little funky hotel in downtown LA! The room was clean, comfortable and had fun, quirky touches. Despite booking one of the cheaper 'mountain view' rooms, we found ourselves with glimpses of the Hollywood sign. The bar on the roof was awesome, with fantastic views and great cocktails (and the Boujee fries were delish!). The staff were without fail, friendly, professional and welcoming and the breakfast was one of the best we'd had in our five week stay in the US.

There was a bit of noise from the rooftop bar (we were on the fifth floor, so just underneath) but the bed was so comfy we fell asleep quickly anyway.

The room was excellent and the restaurant was great. really enjoyed my breakfast each day and the staff were very cool and friendly.

The overall location is a bit down at heel. The area is a little sketchy and needs some attention but I guess that’s not the fault of the Hotel. The rooms are not very well sound proofed, given that the rooftop bar sort of operates as a club. It’s cool on the nights you want to do that but if you’re a bit jet lagged and need some sleep, there is a bit of a loud noise situation.

There seems to be a trend in hotels with not having any storage (drawers) for clothes. I don’t get it. Even if staying a just a few days, it’s nice to be able to unpack. Feels like form over function.

Loved the decor of the entire hotel, so fun and vibrant. The room, although kind of small, had everything we needed and was really cool. The only complaint I think we would have and it's not that big of a deal is the bathroom sink situation. It is long and sticks out and would have been better for the small room to have been horizontal with the wall rather than vertical. But it was fine none the less. Everyone that we came across was so friendly and helpful. We used the valet a lot and they were great too. Wish we could have enjoyed the rooftop patio, we did go look at it in the morning but it wasn't open, would have been a great place for breakfast/brunch because it is really pretty and has great views. Cool touch of adding the Darth Vader masks on the lights for May the 4th. We will stay again, we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Just the sink situation and if you would get rid of the amenity fee....not sure what amenities that covers.

Nice location when you want to visit the city, close to everything. Room was clean and comfortable.

The hotel is also a bar and has a rooftop open to the public -this results in a lot of noise at night especially for rooms closer to the rooftop. We paid for breakfast included but actually they give you a card to choose 1 option every day (out of 3 which are always the same - either a plate with eggs and bacon/bread OR a burrito OR pancakes + black coffe). If you want any other type of coffee besides black coffee or juice or fruit or anything else is all paid - we wish we had known this before we booked it since for us it made more sense to go outside and have more choice. In 5 days it becomes very repetitive. When we arrived to do check in no one explained the basic things of the hotel (time for breakfast, how did it worked, opening hours etc). Overall we felt the service was not really good especially for a 4 star hotel which was not that cheap.

The staff were amazing. Friendly and welcoming. The roof top bar is a gem and the old school hollywood vibe of the property made you feel like you were in Hollywood as opposed to a generic chain hotel. I enjoyed the movies scripts in the room, nice touch there/

The building is older so the elevator is slow....like really slow. But we were able to take the stairs so not a deal breaker.

Fun and funky hotel with a really nice vibe. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Parking is not on-site but is very close by (one block away). The room was great with plenty of space. The bed was super comfortable.

It was a little too close to the clubs and wasn’t exactly appropriate for families. The restaurant seemed a bit overpriced, particularly in the evening. The inbuilt 18% tip took away from the quality of the service.

Loved the location, super close to alot of high-end restaraunts and great overall vibe at the hotel and very clean. Great point for checking our all the touristy things on and near Hollywood boulevard and super close proximity to universal studios. They let us keep our luggage at the front desk after check out as we had a super late night flight that day and the food and cocktails are great! Definitely not a cheap spot though if you are looking at travelling on a budget but definitley a couples friendly hotel.

Only down was on the first night the fire alarm went off and 3 fire trucks arrived. It was quickly resolved however as a false alarm. We certainly didn't mind as we loved the liveliness but do be aware they have live music some nights which can be quite loud. Overall no serious complaints and very happy being stationed here as our last stop on our USA trip.

The rooftop was very noisy all night, until around 2am. This wasn't just on weekends.

Fun vibes and decor. Great if you’re looking for a high-energy place. Very sweet and accommodating staff. The rooftop was epic with great views, drinks, and food. I very much appreciated late-night brunch at the ground floor restaurant (12AM - 4AM). I stayed on a Sunday and was upgraded to a corner room on the 2nd floor and was actually pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t as loud at night as I thought it would be.

The whole place could definitely use a refresher, especially the elevators and carpet. Reminded me of a slightly nicer Selina hostel but for mid-age adults. Definitely not 4 stars on the luxury and quality scale. I would say it’s closer to 3. Rain shower head didn’t work. Location was central but like most places in Hollywood, it didn’t feel super safe at night. Parking was $35 and was in a normal uncovered public lot.

No storage units / drawers for clothing - there was one small rail with a few coat hangers which meant we were living out of a suitcase for 9 nights!

Staff was great. Every single one of them!! The rooms very clean and comfortable beds. There’s also a mini fridge very convenient if you want to have some cold food or beverages.

The location is very convenient but it’s a bit unsafe for females at night. Also, if ur facing the back, there’s a restaurant that will “smoke” ur room with the fumes with the kitchen.

I like the lively vibe, the roof bar, the breakfast was tasty. Staff were generally really friendly and helpful. Especially the security guys and the reception staff

It was our honeymoon so I was disappointed with the lack of view. We stayed 4 years ago and loved it but this time the room felt a bit tired and drab with a poor view. Also our room wasn’t ready at 3pm, we had to wait til 4.30pm. It wasn’t a big deal but not the best welcome

The room was nice and comfortable, especially the bed! The location was good, but still a bit longer of a walk than I had anticipated. The staff was nice. The decor was cool throughout the hotel!

I was on the 2nd floor so the lobby bar music was really loud until they closed at 1am. I should have asked for a bit higher up. Housekeeping was a little spotty and missed my room one day.

Loved the location and the area. Locked in between Sunset Blvd and Hollywood Blvd. Great access to the metro and everything LA. Highly recommend.
