Decent stay. As for location, its very close to the station and since there are lots of guests, you do feel somewhat safe near the hostel. The only cons I found was that the room was set at quite warm temparature and there was no way of bringing it down. Otherwise very good place with lockers assigned.

Great location for walking around DTLA, room was perfect size for a short stay, we did have the corner king so I think it's a little larger than the regular kings, has a cool view. We love the broken Shaker on the rooftop, great cocktails and bites! Convenient valet parking.

Only problem we had was the shower knob was VERY sensitive, it was tight and then there was a point where it would go from cold to scalding hot and very hard to get just right.

Ease of location and check in. Sad that the restaurant was not open our Coffee available earlier than 7am. I was there for work and left at 6:30 each morning.

Getting breakfast in the morning was a bit of a hassle and a long wait. There was sone day when they were closed for orders during their scheduled opening times, which meant I frequented external eateries instead.

good rooms, easy check-in and check-out requiring a minimal amount of time and effort, the location is definitely a plus.

I don't think this is exactly what would be expected of the hostel, but while I stayed here, one night there's someone snoring quite loudly, likely has obstructive sleep apnea, then another next night with clear signs of upper respiratory infection, possibly COVID. It is not ideal that these people with illnesses that are contagious or directly impacting others, they should be roomed to themselves to minimize impact to other, more normal, occupants.

Cool, retro, fun decor and mood. Very nice staff. Paris Baguette next for breakfast. Walkable to what few sights there are in downtown LA.

The street can get really noisy late at night on weekends, The neighborhood is a bit historic, but not in a charming way. If you have to stay in downtown LA, this is the only place I saw with much character.

No Lockers

I like the location, the room and the service. The pool on the rooftop wasn't open at the announced schedule, but that reasonable and acceptable. The bar was opening and people working at the bar were nice to me. I love the beautiful lobby at the first floor. People working at the front desk are very helpful and friendly! Guests I met in the hallways were also nice and chill. If you're lucky and have good roomates, share room will also be a good experience because everyone has some space and privacy, and the price of share room is very good comparing to other hotels and Airbnb in this area.

TL;DR I'll not book "share room" here in the future, or I'll just book room with my friends to live together. The hotel itself is perfectly worth the price. I normaly stay with clean and quiet and friendly roommates in hostels, but not that lucky this time. I booked a 4-woman-shared bedroom this time. One of my roommates was nice, one of the bed is always empty, one of the roomates was very rude. She's nice to me during the day, but she was rude at nights. Also, she's using other people's stuff without asking for permission. One day, she's watching Tik Tok or some videos 3am in the morning, laughing and talking to herself. She's not sleeping and being loud. I tried to use my locker as quiet as possible, she suddenly started to shout at me: You are always so LOOOOOOUD [loud. I think she wanted to say "noisy"?]. She also complained about things I've never done, and sounded like I made noise and pissed her off on purpose, while she was watching videos loudly and talking (to herself or her friend) all the time. She used the wrong locker, and she used all the towels in this room, including mine. Her towels used up the hooks, towel rack, and even put on the floor of the bathroom. I got another towel from the hotel staff, they were helpful and friendly. This time I came to Los Angeles to take care of very important matters and was rather busy. I only have a very short time each day (maybe 2-5 hours) to sleep at the hotel. A shower at about 9 or 10 in the morning, and get out of the hotel. I tried to rest severl hours in the busy days, and tried my best not to disturb my roommate. I really didn't have enough energy to argue or negotiate with her. I was also too busy to talk more to the staff about the details of the situation, other than ask the staff for one bath towels because my roommate used mine.

Group of 3 booked a private room for 4, and the room was spacious and clean. Good locker space for storage of bags and nice amenities included. Rooftop bar was lovely to enjoy a drink.

The smell of the room, carpet, and elevators stink and are grimy. Also, valet is the only parking option through the hotel and it is so expensive.

Freehand was perfect value for a family, we rented a quad with bunk beds. The location was just right and the room was clean and well outfitted. Our only complaint would be not enough bedding to stay warm at night - to top sheet and only one blanket. In November, L.A. nights can be chilly.

Freehand LA is right in downtown LA, close to everything from the Crypto.com arena and Union Station. The building is an older 1920s building and the rooms keep with that theme giving them a comfy vibe. The hostel bunks are comfy and well designed with the lamps and sockets in good locations.

The pool.

I didn't like one male employee being too direct in his language. For example, you cannot shortly say "No" to a customer. Instead say "I am sorry I cannot do that, sir.". That's just one example, but many more occurred. Most employees were really good, but one was really bad.

I like the relaxing environment of the property, I wish we had more time to check it out!

I wish there was a parking lot besides valet but that can be difficult in Los Angeles. Other than that the hotel was nice!

I feel bad after my check out. They told us refund my deposit 50usd but i didn’t receive on my account am not used my credit card used my Debit. Upset

Location is fine, near all public transportation. The hotel is located at the edge of nice and not so nice neighbourhoods, but it didn’t seem unsafe. Supermarket and many nice restaurants are in short walking distance from the hotel

Noises from the street in the night were intense, at least until 3 am there are people screaming, police sirens can be heard or helicopters cruising over you. In our room we had single glass windows, which doesn’t help for any sound isolation.

Great location for us - we walked to dinner and walked to the Orpheum Theater

Our bed was up against the wall so we could only get in and out on one side. Lighting was not good for applying makeup

A little shabby. Pictures are a bit different to what you actually get (wide angle lenses) and the dorm beds don’t have curtains as pictured. You don’t get a top sheet, just a scratchy blanket. I also had to ask for towels. Also needed to provide my own lock for my locker- the hotel sells them for $15 but they were out. Front desk worker was so kind and found one used and let me borrow. Rooftop staff was really rude especially the bartender.

Nice building in central location, close to lots of things. The lobby/restaurant area has a very cool vibe. Nice that there is a pool on the roof though I didn’t get to use it. Loved the pressure of the shower.

The staff didn’t really seem like they wanted to be helpful, I’m not sure why. The shared bathrooms are in the room so if others are sleeping then you will most likely disturb them. I had a drink at the rooftop bar - it took them 10 seconds to make with no effort at all, then cost me $21, didn’t make me want to have any more there. I know it’s not run by the hotel but the pricing is way off. Automatically given top bunk with a ceiling air-conditioning a few inches from my face so breathing that in all night whilst I slept was lovely

No coffee machine in the room, my hairdryer was broken and it took over 30min to have one brought to me. The hours for the pool are absolutely horrible. We booked this hotel for the rooftop pool and never visited it once!! Terribly dissapointing! Not being able to even look at the rooftop because of the hours kids can go. Nobody wants to wait around until noon, it should be open in the morning!! The bed was not comfortable and no boxspring so it was very low.

My corner room was huge. I love the vintage feel of the property and the tile in the bathroom. I liked that there were many cool restaurants etc and the area and it was easy to access the Metro. Staff was very nice. More laid back LA style.

Some of the furniture and door casings were a bit worn but it was a minor concern. Also I wish they had smart TVs in the room, again a minor concern for me.

Nice & friendly staff. Available baggage storage. We used it 2 times. Place was authentic and beautiful. We enjoyed this stay. Location great. Also great cafes on that street with pastries and great coffee.

Room was really nice but too small for group of 4 friends. As we were traveling we had bunch of bags, but place was limited.

The rooms were lovely, inviting, clean and comfortable and the staff were nice. I liked that each bed had it's own light and charging port. Also the accommodation felt safe and there was security around. There was a lovely swimming pool and bar area on the roof, great hotel.

The pool was freezing 🥶. could have benefitted from a little heating.
