My third stay at the Freehand. Still love those amazing showers, room was very clean and the bed was super comfortable. Love the neighborhood too.

Desk was a little worn out and room had a light musty smell which I experienced on my last visit as well.

Room was spacious and the view was good

Staff should have been bit more friendlier, they were too busy by the book.

Rooftop. We had a bedroom with queensize bed and windowseat with great view. Waterpressure in the shower was great. Location perfect for us to explore the city. Maybe not the safest if you want to go out late at night. But we didn’t do that, so was perfect for us.

Two of the three elevators didn’t work.

Staff were very helpfull most especially a young man whos name is Mike He seem to be in a management capacity. Mike couldnt more helpfull to my needs.

That there wasnt a top sheets on the twin beds in the quads.

The ladder to the bunks is in the middle of both the top bunks. Makes it odd to get into either. The two top bunks don’t have a wall in between them. That would be nice.

Room was clean, great location. Whole foods market nearby, very convenient, 10min walk to the metro station.

I cancelled my reservation of the same duration on Trip.com because the facility charge was not included. However, on Booking.com, the fee was all inclusive, so I made my reservation there. However, they insist that my booking was made there. So, I paid an extra fee upon arrival. Then during my stay, one of the staff asked me to leave saying my booking was cancelled, and it turned out that it was their mistake and they didn’t check the booking reference. Overall the stay was fine but these things made me a bit upset

Bed was really comfortable

Not clean, no one hoovered the room the whole time I was there. 5 days.. unacceptable for a room with 4 girls. A man came banging on the room on our last night at 2am to check the room and we had to show him our IDs! Unacceptableeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely disgusting behaviour from the hotel!!!! Pool was always rented to others, outside people constantly in the pool area for parties. I would have never book the place if I knew all of this. I WILL NEVER STAY IN THIS “hotel” EVER AGAIN!!

Good location, privancy, looftop pool and bar is a plus. Definitely would recommend and would come back if i take LA vacation.

The room didn’t have a coffe maker, or microwave, other than that everything else was good.

Really fantastic location. I had forgotten my lock for the lockers and locks are only $14, the staff just took the amount from my security deposit which made things really easy. When I did luggage drop during check out, they were also very helpful and accommodating. Just a few minutes from several bus lines and a short walk to the metro. I was on the fourth floor and it was rather quiet, even in a dorm. My dormmates were really respectful and friendly. There are several chain cafes and restaurants on the block, as well as a whole foods nearby so finding something to eat was never a problem. Speaking of the metro, depending on whether you're there during the weekend or weekday, you can find free events like movies or live music in the area as well! Chinatown and Little Tokyo is not so far so overall, this is a great place to experience the diverse culture of LA.

The basement lounge was a bit sparse for a hostel with just a microwave and refrigerator, (I've stayed at the Chicago location before, and I'd say Freehand is more of a "poshtel" than traditional youth hostel for sure) and laundry services are dry cleaning only by the piece. Wifi was spotty throughout my stay.

I’ve read some bad reviews about the place. From the moment we arrived, the staff were very welcoming, friendly. The room was how I expected, large clean room with all the facilities. The quality/price is great

This is one of my favourite hotels to stay in when I’m just passing through LA. For the price the rooms are super nice, clean, spacious and comfortable. The rooftop is really lovely and chill. I love the retro vibes and little historical parts that have been kept. All the staff were friendly and helpful too. I felt safe and well taken care of. It’s also in a good spot downtown

Unfortunately DTLA is just generally a bit grubby and a little iffy at night, though that’s not a fault of the hotel and the area is probably one of the nicer parts. You’re not allowed to bring your own drinks or food to the rooftop either - which though I understand, it’s a bit of a downer because the restaurant/ bar prices aren’t particularly affordable

Another lovely stay at the Freehand. The location is excellent and the rooms are quiet and clean. The shower was just incredible!

Bathroom had a musty smell, my room on this visit was the same rate category as my previous visit but the room was smaller this time.

We’ve stayed at the Freehand before, but this time our room was much more spacious with a large bathroom. The bed was comfortable, and the 12 p.m. checkout was a great perk. From the 10th floor, the only noise we noticed was from the street below, but it didn’t bother us. The rooftop bar and pool are fantastic, and the location is walkable to everything downtown. As a bonus, the Golden Gopher across the street has a great happy hour and vibe

The only recurring issue we’ve noticed is that the shower curtains are a bit too short, so you have to be extra careful while showering to avoid water spilling onto the floor. That said, if you pay attention and don't flail your arms about, it's all good.

Helpful friendly staff. Good location close to transport and restaurants. The pod bunks are roomy and great for privacy.

The pool area on the the top floor seemed much more smaller and cramped than in the pics. The ladder between the beds very hard to use to get onto top bunk, one ladder/2 bunks you have to kind of jump off the ladder onto the bed and there up fairly high. Getting down is even worse

The interior of the building is very nicely done. As someone who stayed in a 6-bed dormitory, this is one of the nicest shared rooms I've stayed in over the years. Having the rooftop pool is a great bonus.

There should really be a shower by the pool so you can get rid of the chlorine immediately. And although the lobby is good for a bit of work, one day it got taken over by an event so I wasn't able to use it. The ladders (if you are on the top bunk of a shared room bed) are not very well positioned and a bit awkward to use.

Great hotel/ hostel accommodation with great facilities. Staff were friendly and room was clean. I recommend this hotel for solo travellers as it is quite safe. The rooftop pool is awesome too.

Nothing, I felt that considering the price the amenities were great! The only thing I could say is there is no laundry/ washing facilities but that's all.

Very nice old building in downtown LA. I booked a large private room which was spacious and comfortable, and excellent value for money. Unfortunately there were a couple of private events on the rooftop during my stay so I was unable to use the pool.

More information about the amenities etc. I couldn't find a compendium or QR code etc so I kept finding myself having to ask questions about simple things at reception. It would have been good to know ahead of time when the pool wouldn't be available so that I could plan around that, in the end the times I wanted to use it, it wasn't available.

That it felt very safe. The stuff was nice, the room was clean. Bathroom was clean and comfortable. Over all very nice place :)

The bed in the six-beds dorm wasnt comfortable. Later I moved to the 8- beds dorm, and it was much better, and the room was much bigger as well

The atmosphere is very nice. Good location, although LA is big, so you’ll need to travel anyhow.

Nice and downtown, close to the metro, amazing roof pool, great atmosphere, comfortable bed with side rest, and a good bar with menu.

No self service laundry room, and no provided shampoo or body wash in the showers

The hotel is very new and filled with cool people, the rooftop is one of a kind and the staff were very helpful.

Downtown LA is not one the best places to stay because of the homeless people and drug addicts.

The beds in dorms are comfy. Cosy space and nice toilet and shower to begin with. Had a good time chatting with fellow travellers because we all traveled and stayed here for the same reason.

Wasn't able to use wifi at all for the first day and a half, regardless of following connecting instructions. Then it automatically became usable.

The smell of the room- like an old building smell. Not acceptable in this price hotel. Also- windows- it was loud outside noise. I could hear everything from the street all night long. Pool open from 12pm.

I liked the spacious room, the staff was friendly. Great location, close to shops, restaurants, and cafes.

I didn't like that my room was facing the main street, which can get noisy if you're staying the weekend. I didn't like that the ice machine and water dispenser were only in the basement. Only one elevator goes down to the basement, or you take the stairs down. Bed was ok, not the most comfortable.

It was clean and comfortable, and the pool on the roof was very interesting.

But the a/c barely not working the room was too hot

Parking is quite expensive, go to one of the nearby parking lots.

Shared rooms don’t have curtains for individual beds as is the norm in most other hostels (at least in Europe).

The room was nice with the bathrooms in the room. Grocery and drug store close. Refrigerator in the lounge was much appreciated.

No privacy curtains on the beds and the kitchen was lacking in cooking options (only a microwave and toaster available) and there were no plates or utensils available to use.

Location, staff, clean, confort

I liked the lobby and the building. The rooms was nothing special but well maintaned and clean enough.

Downtown LA feels a unsafe, especially for solo travellers like me. If you are on your own, I would suggest another neighborhood.

Overall the location and the property make it worth staying there.

The floors should be better cleaned!! Also some guests would leave their clothes/personal things after moving out. And so no one touches them and they just remain in the room and take space.

The location is exceptional, and overall the space was clean. There are lookers to store personal belongings (it’s necessary to bring a padlock). The people I stayed with were nice and easygoing.

The room is a bit small for 4 people, and it’s easy to be disturbed by other guests noise but it’s understandable since it’s a hostel (I this they also offer single rooms).
