The Independente Hostel & Suites, Lisbon

Place itself is gorgeous, for the building and the furniture/decoration of the common areas. The big plus, I found a very adult average. even in my mix female bedroom, there were older solo traveller (I am 38). Bed was very comfortable and clean. I was very surprised. the shared bathrooms were tiny, with three small sinks only, but I never found them crowd with more then 3 ladies. the showers were big enough to feel comfortable (another real plus for being an hostel). breakfast was perfect to me, with sweaty and savoury selection.

the hair dryer shut it down every few minutes, as expected from the tiny wall fixed ones.

Location is incredible, close to one of the nicest lookouts in Lisbon and a short walk to most things you would need, and plenty of the popular sites. Rooms are clean. Breakfast is really nice, and the restaurant area downstairs is good.

The stairs going up to the three storey bunks feel a little awkward. The shared showers and toilet cubicles are a little small as well. Whilst there is a small bar downstairs and common room upstairs, the hostel doesn't necessarily facilitate social activities, or have an overly social vibe at all times.

Lovely and helpful staff members, always ready to help. The breakfast was lovely and a great added bonus. The rooms were spacious and well equipped and the communal kitchen area and living area was clean and light. I would definetly stay again.

The kitchen area was not open until 9 which was a shame if you wanted to have an early breakfast but otherwise no complaints.

Heritage building, prime location, great breakfast, helpful staff, balcony view of city was simply beautiful with live music all day and night.

The location was super, lots around for restaurants etc. Easy to get everywhere. The character of the building was absolutely charming and the reason we picked it. We did not want something we can get everywhere. Great staff and breakfast too.

The room on the top floor was large but much of it was under a slanted roof so if you are very tall, that makes it a bit unusable. But we were barely there so did not mind.

Amazing building, rooms were cool

Staff were welcoming and helpful, always. The woman that greets you at breakfast is irreplaceable. I love her! The building interiors are quite lovely.

Street noise. The musician in the mirador across the street playing the same things over and over and over. Stop amplification of these street musicians everywhere. Let them play un-amplified.

The hotel is located perfrectly on the Principa real, Bairro Alto. Very nice view from the room, and on the opposite side there is music, nice restaurants and bars

The cieling were in part of the room, low. The bathroom is relatively small. And the breakfast was okiish

I recently stayed at this hostel and had a generally positive experience. The staff were amazing, very friendly, and always willing to help. The bed was comfortable, though a bit squeaky. The location was a highlight, situated in a lively neighborhood filled with pubs, clubs, and restaurants. The included breakfast was delicious and added to the overall experience Overall, I enjoyed my stay and appreciate the efforts of the staff. You would be very happy staying here. With a few adjustments, this hostel could offer an even better experience for its guests.

There are a few areas where improvements could be made. I stayed in the top bunk, and access was a bit challenging due to the narrow and smooth steps. Additionally, the storage for the top bunk was not very accessible, as it was located at the bottom of the bunk beds and opened sideways into a narrow corner space. This made it difficult to store and retrieve items, especially since the locker was vertically oriented without any shelves.

Great breakfast. Very friendly and helpful staff. Loved the rooms as well with the old style high ceilings and creative decor.

I stayed in a Ladies only dormitory. Every room is key coded and yes it was ladies only. Seperate bathrooms which were spacious. Rooms were big and open, 3 high bunks with storage for yourself. Better than I expected - and breakfast included in this too. And a free drink of choice on arrival. I would go back if I was a solo traveller or a couple.

Location is great. You are 10 or 15 minute walk from the river, and close to many, many restaurants The place is very nice, the staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was really good. Everything about it was wonderful with one small exception: our room was tiny compared to our relatives room. It wasn't awful or a dealbreaker, but it was a small room, and it was difficult to deal with it two suitcases and two extra bags. Also, they need more outlets in the room.

Don't get room 2.5. It is small, but quiet. Good for one person, but not for two They also need more outlets in the room.

I loved the vibe of the hotel. The décor and architecture is quirky, colorful, and eclectic. The staff was friendly and helpful. The included breakfast was simple but everything was fresh and of good quality. My room was small but efficient with plenty of storage for clothes and suitcases. It had a huge window that let in tons of light and fresh air. The A/C unit kept the room cool. The hotel is located directly across from a miradouro with a beautiful fountain and a small outdoor café that was beautiful and safe during the evening.

It was louder than I thought it would be when I booked it. The location is on the northern edge of Barrio Alto, a party/bar/nightlife area and the noise level reflected that. There is also a rooftop bar with music playing and people going up and down the stairway located near the rooms making a lot of noise. This didn't bother too much because I live in a city so I'm accustomed to some noise at home but I could see it being a lot for someone who's not used to so much ambient noise.

Great value for money. All staff very friendly and cheery in their roles. Great location. Very clean.

Very inviting

This is one of the best hostels I've ever stayed at. It is exquisitely designed and decorated. It is located in the best part of Barro Alto, with a beautiful public piazza with great city views just outside its front door. The staff are incredibly professional, friendly and accommodating. The hostel has great amenities - a lovely restaurant and rooftop bar, as well as two very beautiful lounges and a well-equipped kitchen if you feel like cooking. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable. The breakfast buffet and welcome drinks were both wonderful. I wish I stayed longer and will definitely return if I'm ever in Lisbon again!

Small additions would make this hostel even better (Although it's already fantastic). I would recommend some curtains around the bunk beds for privacy. The bathrooms would also benefit from some shower cubicles (currently only shower curtains, which makes it difficult to get dressed and hang clothes near the shower)

It is unique and both of the buildings are beautiful inside. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and recommended a few good restaurants to try, they were not wrong. The breakfast was very nice - a combination of buffet and some "cook to order" items. The roof top bar is fun !

The charm of such an old building and the way it has been brought up to date with such incredible skill. The staff were all 100% on their game. We would love to stay again and would always recommend it to friends the roof top view together with the service of food and drink. Amazing location! And the facilities were great. It was very clean, and the reception was very helpful and nice. The dorms and bathrooms were also very clean.

Used this hotel on a few occasions. Always return, great room with a small little out area. Great breakfast. Great location near a viewpoint Wonderful staff, especially the lady in charge of breakfast in the mornings.

Nothing to dislike.

The hostel building itself was stunning with big rooms and clean facilities. Loved that there was a big communal space with a kitchen and the breakfast included was great. The small beer on arrival was also a lovely touch. We could also rent towels for 2 euros each which helped a lot. Location wise it was fantastic, near lots of restaurants and bars, and also nearby to bus stops and tram stops. 10/10

I was on the top bunk and it was VERY high up, but understandable in hostels.

Fantastic ambiance in a fantastic location. Service was great. We stayed in a private room ie not the dormitory style. One of the rare times a property totally exceeded expectations.

great location for old lisbon. good breakfast and nice staff. building is very old but rooms have modern facilities. In all a great place to stay, just dont expect frills! roof top bar was fantastic!

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great value. The room was great in a quaint sort of way. The shower in our room was fantastic. The location is phenomenal. Unfortunately, the rooftop bar is closed Sunday and Monday, so we didn't get to enjoy it. If you are in the hotel side of the building, check out the adorable lift.

Being an old building, you can hear other guests in the hallways very clearly. As this is a more evening oriented quarter of town, there are some late arrivals. The hotel makes it clear that guests should be considered from 12am and the soundproofing on the windows is great. They also provide free earplugs, which were welcome.

The hotel was in a fabulous location opposite a major view point and we were on the top floor with a balcony, the views over Lisbon were breathtaking. Beautiful square opposite that had a festival in during our time which we loved . The hotel itself is really quirky , shabby chic / mid century/ arty. We loved our room it was spacious , clean and had an eclectic mix of furniture. The balcony was an added bonus . The staff were really friendly esp the two guys in reception and Olivia on breakfast who was just lovely . The breakfast was gorgeous continental with an option of eggs done anyway you like. We would definitely stay in their hotel again . They did provide earplugs but they weren’t needed .

Nothing except, the walk up Lisbon’s steepest street to get to the hotel. We did get used to it and it meant we could walk off our pata de natas

Everything was nice

The location was perfect and central to all our needs. Whether it be walking, sightseeing, taking different transport to our different destination, example buses, taxis, tram or the metro. The hotel was perfectly situated to all amenities.

The signage was sometimes hard to locate, but that was the only thing we found confusing.

A very beautiful hostel, friendly and helpful staff, enjoyed the welcome drink. Fully equipped kitchen, even have mini blender; comfortable common room, both kitchen and common room have beautiful views. Spacious and high ceiling room. Shower is big. Breakfast is great, in a nice restaurant. Great location. Highly recommend.

Wifi was not working properly on the 2nd floor on some parts of our room We have to go down the lobby to get fully access. Bed was a bit odd as it is 3 bunks. When you’re sitting on the bed it’s very tight you have to bend. Apparently there’s no ceiling light. Only on your bed. It would be nice if there’s a counter table or at least a clean couch

Beautiful accommodation in an interesting location with a great vibe in the hotel and surrounding area. Friendly welcoming staff on reception and in the hotel restaurant. Delicious restaurant food. Good breakfast. Clean bathroom. Clean kitchen. Lovely sitting rooms. Clean comfortable bed. Ample storage drawer under bed. Excellent security.

The restaurant menu didn't really cater for solo travellers eating alone. The dishes on offer were for sharing between atleast 2 people.

Nothing, it’s perfect

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights and thought the hostel was exceptional! We had a double room to ourselves which meant we were slightly further away from the big dorms, however the room was beautiful, light and airy and had a lovely little balconette that overlooked the back of the building. The entire place was clean, staff were friendly and breakfast was delicious. Sadly we didn’t dine in the restaurant in the evening, however the menu looked very good. The location was great for us as we were able to walk everywhere within the city. (The only downside with the hostel being on the top of the hill meant a very steep climb back up 😂!) Overall we would highly recommend this place as somewhere to stay in Lisbon, in particular if you are looking for a budget friendly stop 😊.

The noise from the back streets was the only complaint we had and it woke us up a few times in the night. However it’s a small price to pay when staying in a ‘party central’ location.

The location was amazing. Right across the hostel was a spectacular view of Lisbon. Close to transit as well.

Gorgeous and clean, felt more like a boutique hotel than a private room in a hostel. The shower pressure was amazing and staff were all welcoming and wonderful. I felt extremely safe as a female solo traveler

The hot water was out my last morning there.

The staff and the customer service was excellent. I had some problems with my hostel stay, so they were really helpful and kind and solved the problem. Special thanks to the red haired lady at reception, she was super helpful and understanding.

Some guests at the hostel were quite loud and not friendly, which is something that the hostel obviously can't affect, but it did affect my stay a little at first.

The place is beautiful and an authentic old house with lots of style and great food, great location with a beautiful viewpoint and lots of bus stops, including sightseeing stops
