Second time staying here. Incredible location. Great balcony.

not really a dislike, but miss the draft beer in the lobby.

The location is good in the center. The breakfast is really good, especially for a hostel. I found the hostel a bit expensive for the quality of the room and bathroom. 3 bunk beds on each other are not ideal, since they were also squeaky. The showers were in seperate room with only curtains. The toilets seemed to be a bit broken and small. It's not well isolated so you easily hear quite easily the noise from the surrounding bars.

The beds didn’t have individual curtains so no intimacy which was a bit weird, especially in mixed dormitories… Bathrooms are a bit small but it’s fine it wasn’t too crowded at the hours I needed to use them

Location, breakfast and staff were very good.

The beds were wooden and made a lot of noise because they were 3 floors. There was no chair or armchair to sit in the room. Toilets and showers were small. after the toilets were cleaned, someone locked the doors and everyone had to use one toilet. :)

Very interesting interior style - quirky. Lovely rooftop dining for breakfast. Cosy bar area for evenings downstairs and excellent location on the bustling Mirador. Staff are friendly and helpful.

I like the location although a little bit noisy despite closing the windows (no wonder they provided ear plugs). Breakfast is served in the adjoining building, decent though the same choices for the 4 days we stayed.

The outdated luggage elevator wasn’t working so we have to carry our luggages upon checking out. This hotel isn’t for those who have mobility issues because the elevator is only supposed to be for luggages.

My third stay and I like this place very much. First it is very well located right in the center of Lisbon and second the house is very nice, kind of old mansion with very high ceilings and big staircases. It's clean, there is a pleasant atmosphere and staff is super friendly. What else?

Only point: they should mention that you need a locker to secure your goods when you stay in the "Youth Hostel" rooms. Once you know, you just bring one along, nothing bulky.

The location is very good, it is walking distance to many nice places including Principe Real, Botanical Garden, Chiado,Bairro alto, also just in front Time Out market, many nice restaurants and bars etc. Also just in front of the hotel there is a bus stop and also trams stop by. The room was cleaned daily, had high ceilings and felt spacy. The bed was comfortable. the breakfast was nice. The lady working during breakfast was very friendly and had a nice energy.

I had a private room in the next building. Internet in the room was not very reliable. The room needed renovation, had kind of old, dirty rugs and old furniture. And also when you entered the room, there was a diffenrence in the level of the floor which i found dangerous( Especially at night, you could easily fall down, you can find the photo of this) The AC( heater) in the toom was very old, did not work well in the first days due to central heating. The room i booked had 2 windows in the photo amd looked bigger, the room i got had 1 window.

The fact that staff is extremely loud! They are used to having the guests be loud in the restaurant till late every night people drink a lot here at night. And the staff screams and yells even louder then the guests

The location is perfect-no doubt!but when you get a bed in one of the rooms next to the street its nearly impossible to sleep…

I was staying in this hostel for years now but everytime i come back it feels like its getting more and more run down(and the prices of course are getting higher and higher in exchange)-sad but true fact

No kettle in en suite room for hot drinks, street facing room was a bit noisy until midnight from nearby buskers etc, although earbuds were provided.

Nicely located, beautiful building, good breakfast. The reception personnel was friendly and helpful. There is luggage storage available.

Th elevator was broken, the WIFI didn't work in the upper floors where the rooms were located. The cleanliness of the bathroom/showers could be optimised. Because of the location it will be noisy at night, so oropax are recommended.

My fifth stay at Independente, so I know what to expect and keep coming back! It's gotten so popular, but the staff are as warm as always. They were also so quick to help out and even make up the sofabed that I hadn't warned them I needed.

Was a bit saddened to hear the rooftop was shut for the season. Made the mistake of going to breakfast right at 8 am and honestly, it's such a popular hotel now that breakfast is heaving then (and some of the other guests were a touch inconsiderate, blocking pathways and such). Walked by breakfast at 9 am and it was as peaceful as could be!

Location is incredible, close to one of the nicest lookouts in Lisbon and a short walk to most things you would need, and plenty of the popular sites. Rooms are clean. Breakfast is really nice, and the restaurant area downstairs is good.

The stairs going up to the three storey bunks feel a little awkward. The shared showers and toilet cubicles are a little small as well. Whilst there is a small bar downstairs and common room upstairs, the hostel doesn't necessarily facilitate social activities, or have an overly social vibe at all times.

Lovely and helpful staff members, always ready to help. The breakfast was lovely and a great added bonus. The rooms were spacious and well equipped and the communal kitchen area and living area was clean and light. I would definetly stay again.

The kitchen area was not open until 9 which was a shame if you wanted to have an early breakfast but otherwise no complaints.

The location was super, lots around for restaurants etc. Easy to get everywhere. The character of the building was absolutely charming and the reason we picked it. We did not want something we can get everywhere. Great staff and breakfast too.

The room on the top floor was large but much of it was under a slanted roof so if you are very tall, that makes it a bit unusable. But we were barely there so did not mind.

Staff were welcoming and helpful, always. The woman that greets you at breakfast is irreplaceable. I love her! The building interiors are quite lovely.

Street noise. The musician in the mirador across the street playing the same things over and over and over. Stop amplification of these street musicians everywhere. Let them play un-amplified.

The hotel is located perfrectly on the Principa real, Bairro Alto. Very nice view from the room, and on the opposite side there is music, nice restaurants and bars

The cieling were in part of the room, low. The bathroom is relatively small. And the breakfast was okiish

I recently stayed at this hostel and had a generally positive experience. The staff were amazing, very friendly, and always willing to help. The bed was comfortable, though a bit squeaky. The location was a highlight, situated in a lively neighborhood filled with pubs, clubs, and restaurants. The included breakfast was delicious and added to the overall experience Overall, I enjoyed my stay and appreciate the efforts of the staff. You would be very happy staying here. With a few adjustments, this hostel could offer an even better experience for its guests.

There are a few areas where improvements could be made. I stayed in the top bunk, and access was a bit challenging due to the narrow and smooth steps. Additionally, the storage for the top bunk was not very accessible, as it was located at the bottom of the bunk beds and opened sideways into a narrow corner space. This made it difficult to store and retrieve items, especially since the locker was vertically oriented without any shelves.

Great breakfast. Very friendly and helpful staff. Loved the rooms as well with the old style high ceilings and creative decor.

Location is great. You are 10 or 15 minute walk from the river, and close to many, many restaurants The place is very nice, the staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was really good. Everything about it was wonderful with one small exception: our room was tiny compared to our relatives room. It wasn't awful or a dealbreaker, but it was a small room, and it was difficult to deal with it two suitcases and two extra bags. Also, they need more outlets in the room.

Don't get room 2.5. It is small, but quiet. Good for one person, but not for two They also need more outlets in the room.

I loved the vibe of the hotel. The décor and architecture is quirky, colorful, and eclectic. The staff was friendly and helpful. The included breakfast was simple but everything was fresh and of good quality. My room was small but efficient with plenty of storage for clothes and suitcases. It had a huge window that let in tons of light and fresh air. The A/C unit kept the room cool. The hotel is located directly across from a miradouro with a beautiful fountain and a small outdoor café that was beautiful and safe during the evening.

It was louder than I thought it would be when I booked it. The location is on the northern edge of Barrio Alto, a party/bar/nightlife area and the noise level reflected that. There is also a rooftop bar with music playing and people going up and down the stairway located near the rooms making a lot of noise. This didn't bother too much because I live in a city so I'm accustomed to some noise at home but I could see it being a lot for someone who's not used to so much ambient noise.

Great value for money. All staff very friendly and cheery in their roles. Great location. Very clean.

The decor and location

It is unique and both of the buildings are beautiful inside. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and recommended a few good restaurants to try, they were not wrong. The breakfast was very nice - a combination of buffet and some "cook to order" items. The roof top bar is fun !

Used this hotel on a few occasions. Always return, great room with a small little out area. Great breakfast. Great location near a viewpoint Wonderful staff, especially the lady in charge of breakfast in the mornings.

Nothing to dislike.

The hostel building itself was stunning with big rooms and clean facilities. Loved that there was a big communal space with a kitchen and the breakfast included was great. The small beer on arrival was also a lovely touch. We could also rent towels for 2 euros each which helped a lot. Location wise it was fantastic, near lots of restaurants and bars, and also nearby to bus stops and tram stops. 10/10

I was on the top bunk and it was VERY high up, but understandable in hostels.

great location for old lisbon. good breakfast and nice staff. building is very old but rooms have modern facilities. In all a great place to stay, just dont expect frills! roof top bar was fantastic!

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great value. The room was great in a quaint sort of way. The shower in our room was fantastic. The location is phenomenal. Unfortunately, the rooftop bar is closed Sunday and Monday, so we didn't get to enjoy it. If you are in the hotel side of the building, check out the adorable lift.

Being an old building, you can hear other guests in the hallways very clearly. As this is a more evening oriented quarter of town, there are some late arrivals. The hotel makes it clear that guests should be considered from 12am and the soundproofing on the windows is great. They also provide free earplugs, which were welcome.

The location was amazing, great value for money, a great breakfast selection and friendly staff who made me feel at ease and offered a welcome drink after a long journey.

Only a minor thing that the soap dispenser in one of the bathrooms was broken and I had to go to the other bathroom to wash my hands but I could see that there had been efforts to repair it and that these just hadn’t worked and I’m sure it was sorted shortly after my trip

Everything was nice

The breakfast was amazing. I liked it so much. Also I liked that was complimentary glass of wine. And I liked the receptionist, that knew some words in Ukrainian language, he was so nice (Unfortunately, I forgot his name). The location of hostel is near the beautiful Miradouro Sao Pedro. And price per night is also ok.

The third tier of the bed was..unusual. The bed shook when anyone made the slightest movement. Was really noisy in the night. Also was a huge surprise, that in the reception 1 small bottle of water costs 2 euro (it was not even the 0,5 liters, it was 0,3 or even less). But I wanted to drink so much, tired from the long journey (the way from Ukraine in total took 2,5 days) and just paid. But more surprised I was in the morning, when found out that there is a carafe of water at the reception and guests can drink from it. Why that guy who sold out that small water didn't tell me about that, I don't know. At least, made a profit for hostel of an additional 2 euros 😀

The location was perfect and central to all our needs. Whether it be walking, sightseeing, taking different transport to our different destination, example buses, taxis, tram or the metro. The hotel was perfectly situated to all amenities.

The signage was sometimes hard to locate, but that was the only thing we found confusing.

Wifi was not working properly on the 2nd floor on some parts of our room We have to go down the lobby to get fully access. Bed was a bit odd as it is 3 bunks. When you’re sitting on the bed it’s very tight you have to bend. Apparently there’s no ceiling light. Only on your bed. It would be nice if there’s a counter table or at least a clean couch

Lovelly location, warm & friendly staff, smiley faces also in the restaurant.

It was very uncomfortable for the bed sheet and duvet to be squeezed together into the bed base. When you pull the duvet, the sheet comes with it and making you really very tired. Overall the cleaning could be improved.

My clothes were ruined by the washing machine machine machine or the dryer, even in delicate program, I have holes in my cotton hoodie. don’t use them

I loved: -The location offered a beautiful view. -The decoration of the place was so beautiful. prettier than any other hostel I have ever stayed at. -Very friendly reception (even when I temporarily locked my room card in the room and had to ask for a second one). They helped us carry our suitcases to our rooms too. -The free breakfast was cool, and the serving lady was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, and so funny, she even spoke greek to us! - We got offered a free drink coupon upon arrival

-The main reason that made me dislike this hostel is that there is no central light in the room. No small floor lamp either. So imagine arriving in the afternoon, when the room is completely empty from people, and you can't turn on a light to see... I had to turn on all the bed lights, which felt very uncomfortable as if I was intruding the other visitors' private space. I came in February when the sunlight is over early in the day, so imagine the torture it was, doing everything with the tiny light or the phone's torch feature... -The elevator was out of order and we had to climb stairs all the time. -The location at the top of the city was a beauty, but at the same time, it felt like I died several times each time I climbed all the way up to the hostel's location. - The bathrooms felt lacking privacy, there was no personal space to change in the showers, and no place to hang your clothes, which led to many people undressing in the open. It was uncomfortable (and also it was uncomfortable to undress if you weren't cool with doing it in front of others). -The showers had curtains which were not very clean (even though the place as clean). The heat makes the curtains want to stick on you, and... yuck - The toilet rooms were tiny. I am short and I could not squat and fit in there (let alone sit there, if someone is brave enough).
