Hotel The Clarence, Dublin

6-8 Wellington Quay, Temple Bar, Dublin 2, D02 HT44, Ireland (show on map)

Expert reviews

CNN review:

“Owned by Bono and The Edge of U2 fame, this riverside hotel is all class, with its bright oak woods and chocolate leathers. With 49 rooms — many of which overlook the River Liffey — The Clarence qualifies for boutique status, but without all of the bombast that characterizes many designer hotels.”

Lovely staff - great location - but works out expensive if buying breakfast!

Great Location - temple bar is on the back doorstep!

It is expensive considering that the breakfast is not included in room rate.

Nice city centre location with plenty bars and restaurants a plenty in the immediate vicinity.

Great location, decent sized & comfortable rooms. The staff were very friendly.

The heating is controlled centrally and comes on for a short period in the evening. The room felt a bit chilly when I checked in mid-afternoon, but there was no was to warm it up.

Spacious historic hotel in a great location.

The room was quite large, and the bed was very comfortable. The location with a view of the river and just around the corner from the lively Temple Bar area can't be beat.

Some of the outlets didn't function and the overhead lights were erratic. It wasn't really a problem because the bedside lamps worked well. A curved shower rod would also be nice.

Great place to stay in a good location

Nice and clean. Central to everything so can walk everywhere. We stayed midweek and found the hotel very quiet no loud music playing or noise from the street keeping you awake.

Leaving to come home.

Wonderful stay in the central of Dublin

Staff very friendly and helpful. The drinks at the bar phantastic and do creations that are not on the menu (thanks Ross). Ross, CEO, made with us a Tour through the whole compound (thanks again Ross, taken this time for us)

In the night could get noisy.

Great bars

Very disappointing breakfast Very noisy in the evenings as the court yard at the back is the outside of a pub on temple bar. It didn’t stop the music until after 2am. No air con in any of the rooms which isn’t usually a problem on the British isles but as we could not open the windows due to noise this was a big issue.

Great Location, staff so friendly and accommodating. We were also upgraded to a deluxe room which was a nice bonus.

Shower in our room flooded the bathroom, we notified reception and they were to send maintenance to look at it. We were only staying a night so didn't affect our stay too much.

Pleasant

The initial room we were allocated was very tired and more like a hostel or budget hotel, not a 4 star hotel. Jose was kind enough to show us 2 renovated rooms that were right next to Temple Bar and would be loud and then showed us the 5th floor suite that while in need or renovation, had access to the rooftop area and was quiet.

The hotel is in the middle of a refurb and when finished, will be great.

Well worth it

I’m a very detail oriented guy. I found the drawers hadcan extremely wierd hole to pull it open. I literally cut my finger trying to open it. Bad design and unsafe. Keep away or use a spoon to open if needed.

Lovely staff, great location, beautiful lobby and internal bars, but rooms in need of a refresh.

Great location and friendly staff. The lobby and bar has been beautifully redone.

The rooms really are quite tired and the bathroom due to cracked tiles, paint on the towel rail, discoloured bath, doesn't feel clean.

Overall we did enjoy our stay and would definitely return

The location is perfect. Also liked the bar area.

Bed wasn’t as comfortable as the one in our room on a previous stay. Couldn’t adjust temperature in shower as it was broke down we tried to get showered in scalding water. Did report to reception when we checked out.

Great Location, Amazing Staff

Fabulous location and nice view of the river

The hotel is older and the pipes rumble and moan after turning on water in the bathroom. The sink had cracks and the tub was chipped. I had to turn the sink handles four times around just to get water flowing. The restrooms could use an update.

Trendy elegance in a great location

Decor throughout the hotel areas, great food in restaurant, helpful staff, large room with nice view of bustling street, nice hairdryer, nice coffee option in-room, very handy location for partaking in nightlife

Light switches were confusing, plug in outlets in awkward locations, tub filled with a lot of water while I showered, fabric shower curtain widely flapping during my shower, bathroom light over sink did not work.

Happy days and nights at the Clarence.

We loved the balcony off our room. The location was okay, a bit noisy at night. Loved the bath towels and sheets. Rooms made up every day. Coffee and tea service restocked daily. Lots of hot water! Front desk super helpful.

The shower curtain. Figure this out! Get the curved shower curtain holders so I don’t have to. feel the shower curtain up against me. Gross

Great hotel in an excellent location!

The location was incredible, located in the heart of Temple Bar. And the hotel is beautiful. Very classic European style design and very comfortable.

Being in Temple Bar area comes with a good bit of noise. There was a bar/club next to the hotel that was open until 3am. The hotel is currently being update, but the upper floors haven’t yet been changed and do not have A/C. When we got hot we had to open the windows which unfortunately then exposed us to all of that noise.

Our stay was average for a reasonable price range. Thank you for the considerate and kind staffing.

Our room was enough for what we needed, average bed comfort. Our room have plenty of storage space. Location is great for getting around Temple Bar District and local sites. WE did not use the restaurant or bar services. Staff were kind and for the most part, helpful. The lounge area is well decorated and inviting. It was helpful having 24 hour staffing at the front desk.

The plumbing in the bathroom is hard to use. The sink nozzles had to be turned several times to have running water, making it hard to conserve water use. The toilet did not flush easily and had to be applied several times for regular flushing. Prices for the restaurant and bar were high, so we did not dine or drink within the facility. Heating was an issues on our last night. We needed to go to bed early for VERY early departing flights the next morning, the heat was turned on (controlled by the facility) making it feel extremely hot and unbearable in our room. We had to ask twice at 8pm and 11pm for someone to please turn down the heat. We did not get very much sleep making our early morning flights difficult. Also, when messaging the hotel about parking accommodations, we were referred to APCOA Jervis Street Car Park. I was under the impression this was a 24 hour car park. It is not. While it is partly our fault for not reading every single sign, 24 hours means 24 hours, it would have been helpful for the staff to inform us of the Car Park hours. We ran into an issue getting our rental car out before 8am the morning of our departing flights. It was an additional 50 EUR cash plus the full price for parking to get our car before 8am. The hotel told us we could validate our tickets and cap our parking fees at 15 to 19 EUR (I was told two different amounts) and because we left before 8am the Car Park could not validate our parking. We spent almost 85 EUR for a days worth of parking. That could have been avoided. Lastly, if your intentions are to sleep early and wake up very early, this is not the hotel or area to accomplish that. Every night there is loud music and parties well past 1am.

Fabulous & trendy

The staff are very friendly at check-in and KellyAnn in the bar was superb. Tje location is great, the bar & lobby are gorgeous. Bedrooms are a little dated but spotlessly clean.

The bath is mottled and needs replacing. The deposit system is unfair, they tske €50 per night out of your account straight awsy but it takes 3 or 4 working days for it to go back into your account, that's not right.

Good location!

The room was big with a little balcony., which was a nice surprise.

The bathroom need an upgrade: old bathroom, very scratched floor and the windows had a bit of mould, needed a bit more care. Could have a blanquet for the morning when the AC is turned off (no control from your room).
