Foundation Hotel, Detroit

250 W Larned St, Detroit, MI 48226, USA (show on map)

Housed in a massive 1929 Neoclassical building, the Detroit Foundation Hotel is a brilliant piece of historic preservation. The five-story structure originally served as the Detroit Fire Department Headquarters, specifically built as the city’s first station designed for motorized fire trucks rather than horses. After the department moved out in 2013, local architect firm McIntosh Poris Associates and interior designers at Simeone Deary Design Group stepped in to transform the space into a stunning 100-room boutique hotel.

The building’s past is proudly stitched into its modern design. Guests enter the hotel right through the massive, arched terra-cotta portals that once served as the fire engine doors. Inside, the hotel’s flagship restaurant and bar, The Apparatus Room, sits directly in the old first-floor truck bays. The designers purposefully preserved the original glazed brick walls, red tile floors, and even five of the historic brass fireman poles, giving the space an unmistakable historic gravity.

The rooms themselves pay homage to Detroit’s manufacturing legacy. The color scheme features deep chocolates and metallic pastels accented with blues and pinks—a direct nod to the paint colors of 1960s automobiles. You will also find custom headboards crafted from repurposed local wood, wallpaper featuring historic Detroit architecture, and unique carpet designs inspired by “fordite,” the layered, hardened automotive paint slag salvaged from old factory tracks.

The hotel’s location places you right in the middle of downtown Detroit’s resurgence. It sits directly across the street from Huntington Place convention center and is just a short walk from the scenic Detroit Riverwalk. If you head slightly north, you will hit Campus Martius Park, a bustling year-round gathering spot featuring summer concerts and winter ice skating.

Sports fans and theatergoers are also in luck, as Ford Field, Comerica Park, and the historic Fox Theatre are all close enough for a quick walk or a brief ride on the QLine streetcar. It is a fantastic home base that manages to honor the city’s industrious history while keeping you connected to its modern energy.

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“In 2017, this 1929 fire station in the heart of the city was transformed into a boutique hotel that blends modern convenience and style with original architectural features and a strong sense of history. Rooms are spacious and comfortable.”

CN Traveler review:

“This is a rare hotel for Detroit, with an authentic scene and a top restaurant (for the city, period). The Foundation Hotel could be a game-changer. Blessed by Martha Stewart and professional athletes, with a lobby scene even locals enjoy.”

Telegraph review:

“This former 1920s fire station has been transformed into a stylish boutique hotel filled with excellent design, sumptuous eats and just the right amount of gritty hipster edge. It truly is a symbol of the remarkable resurgence of downtown Detroit.”

What stay? Hotel didn’t honour the booking.com confirmation

Nothing

I arrived at midnight with a confirmed booking to be told that hotel would not accept the booking.com confirmation. Unbelievable. Never had this happen own before. Beyond unacceptable

We would stay again.

Cool atmosphere, loved that the space was once a firehouse and was repurposed to be a hotel. Coffee in the morning was appreciated. The front desk staff was very friendly and gave us good information.

The light fixtures next to the bed were set very high on the wall and could not be reached from bed to turn them off, we had to get out of bed to do that - it was a little annoying, not a deal breaker though.

The Foundation for an enjoyable stay in Detroit...

Staff were relaxed and approachable. Unusual design and decor - definitely something different. Surprisingly quiet location at night, but within easy reach of downtown and transport options. Also plenty to enjoy in the Apparatus Room restaurant and bar area.

Lobby area and main entrance is a bit basic, but consistent with the unusual vibe of this place. Don't go expecting a standard Marriott/Hilton type experience!

We have come here once a year for many years and I’m sure we will be back

A beautiful hotel with a wonderful atmosphere. The restaurant is great and it’s always welcoming.

My only issues were the pillows and no room maintenance. My wife and I found the pillows to be very uncomfortable and we spent 3 nights there with no room maintenance. We had to call front desk just to get some clean towels.

Well manicured comfort.

How well this historic building was put together to create a beautifully modern hotel.

We were told we couldn’t sit in the lounge/restaurant area although there weren’t many people there. It was snowing, we loved the view. It would’ve been nice to have somewhere to just lounge around.

A cut above

Beautiful 2017 reimagination of old firehouse. We had call 3Xs to another hotel, which had a block of rooms for the wedding we traveled for. Glad we found the Foundation. Easy check in, and out. Very good fitness room.. Thank you.

Thought about $50 over priced.

A place with character

Modern hotel with striking design and a great restaurant, set inside a charming old firehouse building. Excellent service and a beautifully decorated lobby for the holidays. Musicians playing live added a warm, memorable atmosphere. Our second visit, and we’d gladly return.

I remember from our first visit the tables showcasing old newspapers, photos, and memorabilia under glass. I miss that design detail, it brought so much character to the space and made the building’s history feel even more present.

Very cool boutique hotel in Downtown Detroit

This hotel was a great boutique size, it wasn't too large and it had a very cool style. My son had a health issue while we were there and the staff were all really supportive and responsive. We really enjoyed our stay here.

Valet was a little slow to get your vehicle, especially in the morning. I wouldn't mind seeing more security features in the elevator to tap the room key in order to go up to the rooms.

Beautifully renovated old building serving an elevated experience

The Staff was pleasant and super helpful. We ate a late dinner at the bar in the lobby the first night and was surprised at the elevated menu. The food was good and service was excellent. Our room was quiet and comfortable. The building is interesting. The location was great for going to the Ford Field.

This room was pricy for what we got. I would note that we were there for a Lions football game and the rate was likely elevated due to this event. Otherwise, it was a good stay and would visit again.

Very cool hotel in the heart of downtown Detroit.

Very cool hotel in the heart of downtown Detroit. Walkable to Ford Field/Comerica Park. Former Fire Station with super cool lobby and excellent restaurant and funky/cool/comfortable rooms. Great experience and would very happily stay again.

Had some noisy neighbors one night, but knocked on the door and asked them to chill out--they did.

Detroit was not a place I would revisit as there isn’t much there that interests me

It was very unusual and centrally located

The fact that unknown to us if you wanted your room serviced …ie clean towels or anything inside the room you had to request it or nothing was done…

An unique place to stay with the right mix of service, friendliness, and style

Location is excellent with everything you need within walking distance.staff was all friendly and courteous. Rooms and common areas are unique unlike a chain with a story and a beauty all their own. Restaurant bar was a destination all its own with good food, decor, and great staff as well.

Not a cheap place to stay, but even so, it was a great value.

I would recommend this hotel to others. The staff was friendly and rooms were clean and comfy.

We did not stay for breakfast. We left very early for an appointment and the manager eagerly went to get us some freshly made coffee to go. The restaurant had a nice bar and we we able to go for drinks the evening that we checked in and we enjoyed their cocktail menu.

It was a lovely hotel and seemed newly renovated. The in-house restaurant was a little pricey.
