Hotel The Adolphus, Dallas

1321 Commerce Street, Main Street District, Dallas, TX 75202, United States of America (show on map)

Stepping into The Adolphus Autograph Collection feels like walking right through a chapter of Texas oil and beer history. Opened in 1912, this downtown Dallas icon was built by none other than Adolphus Busch, the legendary co-founder of Anheuser-Busch. He spared no expense, spending nearly $2 million to create a grand, 22-story Beaux-Arts masterpiece designed by the St. Louis architectural firm Barnett, Haynes, and Barnett, which briefly reigned as the tallest building in the entire state.

The hotel has hosted an incredible lineup of global elite over the last century, ranging from big band legends like Glenn Miller to several U.S. presidents, and even Queen Elizabeth II. Interestingly, a massive 1980s renovation completely transformed the interior, halving the room count from 1,200 small quarters to just over 400 highly spacious, luxury suites to match modern expectations.

The Adolphus is packed with unique structural surprises, including a hidden, ultra-exclusive 10-seat speakeasy called Sushi by Scratch. If you prefer a ghost story with your luxury, legend says the 19th floor is haunted by a “jilted bride” from the 1930s. Locals also flock here for the world-famous afternoon tea service inside the French Room Salon, an elegant space decorated with dozens of works by local Texas artists.

The surrounding location is perfect for exploring the very best of Dallas. You are just a short walk from the buzzing AT&T Discovery District, the Dallas World Aquarium, and the lush lawns of Klyde Warren Park. For culture and history buffs, the hotel sits minutes away from the massive Dallas Museum of Art and the historic Dealey Plaza, home to The Sixth Floor Museum.

Expert reviews

Frommers review:

“The equivalent of the Plaza in New York City or the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, the Adolphus is the grande dame of Dallas hotels. Built in 1912 by beer magnate Adolphus Busch, it’s a landmarked Beaux Arts storehouse of treasures.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Dallas.

Lonely Planet review:

“The 422-room Adolphus takes us back to the days when gentlemen wore ties and hotels were truly grand, not bastions of ascetic minimalism. Just exploring the 22 floors of this 1912 labyrinth, now part of the Marriott empire, is an adventure. Note that room sizes vary widely.”

Forbes review:

“Situated on the site of the town’s original City Hall, The Adolphus has been a part of the fabric of Dallas life since its opulent doors first opened in 1912. Built by beer magnate Adolphus Busch of Anheuser-Busch fame, the beaux-arts-style building was modeled after a German castle and stands 22 stories over Commerce Street.”

I am not sure I would stay here again unless the Hotel was able to keep up with a cool temperature

The temperature throughout the Hotel was entirely too hot. We were there for a wedding on Saturday night and the ballroom we were in was like a oven. Orr stay included a breakfast, but we were not given a voucher so we did not know there was a price limit on our breakfast. At checkout they took off $21 each for the breakfast, but it was more than that, so it would have been helpful if they would have told us in our checkin portion.

We had a great little getaway in Dallas and The Adolphus made the weekend so fun relaxing

It was classic and elegant, but was plenty of modern entities and flair so that I’ve been. Staff was incredible.

very disappointing and gloomy

It is like wandering in an abandoned property where strangers suddenly appear and disappear

the rooms, the public spaces, the staff everything. The building lends itself to a wonderful experience but the budget isnt there.

Well worth it

Great location and terrific room. Fabulous room size and excellent bars and restaurants.

The room cleaning was done super late and therefore we didn’t get our room cleaned once in 3 days because they showed up as we returned each day.

There was no stay. They had no reservation even though I paid for it.

I booked on this website, and the Hotel said they had no reservation for us. Then, they refused to refund our deposit. Don't use this website.

Actually giving me what I paid for.

I would never come back I wasted my money

I liked the atmosphere walking into the hotel.

I didn’t like my hotel room. I was moved from one due to the mildew smell and the other room still smelled like mildew. The carpet was old. The flooring was dirty. There was blood splatter on the wall and the floor. There was hair that was not mine in the shower drain. The room wasn’t clean.

Next time I will try another hotel

Location.

Stayed 1 night. Had several issues:
1. The drain wasn't working in either the bathroom or the toilet.
2. Noise disrupted my sleep.
I changed the room in the morning, new room was fine, but night was ruined.
3. Pricy and very slow valet parking. They check you in using mobile text message. But if you have nonUS number, you are in trouble.
4. Even though I made a reservation for 4 persons with breakfast included, I received a breakfast for 2 persons only. Had to pay extra. BTW they charge you 20% service automatically and then ask for tips on top of that. Breakfast was average

Fantastic hotel! Want to stay longer next time. Loved historic factor and beautiful boutique interior design

Loved the history, interior design was beautiful and felt like a boutique hotel even though it was a large building. Loved the pool, and all the sitting areas to relax, loved the coffee shop is open until 10pm!
Bar was stunning and French room beautiful and plan to have tea next time.

Every time we called up our car from valet it took over 30 minutes and they always brought up another car with same last name but wasn’t ours. Took 3 people to finally recover our car each time which was frustrating when we had appointments to be at. Especially for $60 a night! Area surrounding is ok , typical down town but dodgy and wouldn’t walk to far at night in the area a few streets over. Wish for more stores and cafes in walking distance. Later room service would be nice

We thought we were going to a luxury hotel and got a fraternity party

The Adolphus is a beautiful hotel; I have stayed many times and have always loved the history and the attention to detail. This was such a disappointing and different experience. I don’t think I will ever go back.

The Adolphus management booked so many events the staff could not keep up. They were trying to maintain service for a wedding- perhaps two, a shower, and another event. We could not get into our room because it was not ready and were unable to make our dinner reservation. As we sat in the bar area, very young wedding guests filled the area with nowhere else to go and were loud and out of control. When we discussed the situation with a manager, he responded, “Yes, this is a busy hotel.”
Just incredibly disappointing to see this property with so much to offer become what amounts to a fraternity house because the management doesn’t have better judgment.

Everything was perfect.

Everything at the Adolphus was exceptional. They pay attention to every little detail from the moment you step through the front door. Every member of the staff was wonderful, I haven't experienced service like this in a long time, if ever. Front desk staff helped guide us on sights to see. There is a house car that will drop you off places within a 3 mile radius. We ate at one of the restaurants for breakfast, the food and service were fantastic. I felt the price was more than reasonable for the experience, I would have paid more. Best hotel experience for me. 10/10 highly recommend.

I can't complain about one thing during our stay.

Disappointed in their lack of support for a mistake that they have made.

The hotel itself is fantastic, facilities, cleanliness, restaurants.

I was overcharged for my stay and I have spent nearly 4 weeks trying to get a resolution but the hotel have yet to acknowledge any of my emails asking for assistance.

Luxury stay with everything you need.

The executive suite was so spacious and accommodating for my birthday. The roof top pool was nice on the weekend and had the best drinks. I’ll definitely be booking again for my next event.

It’s a little noisy at night which is expected with it being in the heart of downtown Dallas.

Gorgeous art deco luxury hotel with great facilities and walking distance to tourist sites.

A beautiful luxury looking hotel with great facilities.

The toilet flush did not work. However, when reported it was promptly fixed.

Beautiful and relaxing!

Absolutely beautiful! Top class equipment in fitness center and lovely rooftop pool. Our larger suite was plenty of room for our family of 4. I can see the potential for noise issues but other than the thunderstorm outside we only heard noise once from one neighbor. Morning check out front desk (young woman and gentleman whose sister is from Tampa) and valet staff were very friendly. Cafe near front of hotel had delicious breakfast offerings that we could bring on the road. We will definitely return!

Ridiculously poorly run.

The Valet people lost the key of our car. We were stuck for 3 hours waiting for them to bring in locksmith to make us temporary key. This broke our plans that were the purpose of our visit to Dallas. When my husband went to talk to the manager about compensating us for what happened the manager Princess said "it's a big corporation" and she cant do much about it. We got some points that we had to get an app to access that we will probably never use. Ridiculous!

The management is not accountable for problems the guests have. The Valet people lost the keys of our car 3 hours waiting and the manager of the hotel was telling us that hotel is not responsible for valet services. Wait, this is your valet. Its not like I had a choice.

Just what we needed.

The staff was excellent and attentive.

The only thing was lots of noise from the street (late night concert) that we could hear in our room. That isn't the hotel's fault though.

seriously over-priced. absolutely NOT value for money

Clean. Central location

Old and out-dated and in some areas, run-down. it was also seriously overpriced and absolutely not value for money. The hotel charged an additional compulsory $25 per day amenities charge adding $75 unanticipated dollars to my bill. additional hotel added 20% compulsory gratuity to every service. my simple manicure at the hotel spa cost $147.60. That’s simply crazy!!!!🤬

Need to work on their check in check out and room ready calls. Staff the front reception

Great room and bar staff excellent. Porters and valets were phenomenal.

Front desk was terrible. Uniformed, sent me on a wild goose chase. Never called when room was ready, porter had to get someone from back office to man the reception, six people waiting.
