Marriott Mena House, Cairo

Pyramids’ Road, Giza, Cairo, Egypt. (show on map)

At the foot of the Giza Plateau, the Marriott Mena House offers what is arguably the most breathtaking front-row seat to the Great Pyramids of Giza. It’s so close that you can easily walk to the ancient wonder in about ten minutes, or simply admire the massive stone structures while eating breakfast on the outdoor terrace.

The property started out in 1869 as a royal hunting lodge for the Egyptian Viceroy, Khedive Ismail, before a wealthy English couple bought it and transformed it into a luxury hotel in 1886. To expand the estate, they hired British architect Henri Favarger—the creative mind behind the iconic Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan—who blended rich English comfort with stunning Arabic woodwork.

History practically seeps out of the walls here. The hotel has hosted a glittering roster of legendary guests, including Winston Churchill, Agatha Christie, and Charlie Chaplin. It even made history as the home of the 1977 peace talks between Egypt and Israel. Adding to its unique features, the hotel opened Egypt’s very first swimming pool back in 1890.

Beyond the immediate magic of the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx, the location is incredibly convenient for exploring. The hyper-modern Grand Egyptian Museum is just a short drive away, making it easy to pair your stay with an up-close look at thousands of ancient Egyptian artifacts.

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“Built in 1869 as Khedive Ismail’s hunting lodge, Mena House dazzles with intricate gold decoration and air that perpetually smells of jasmine. The grandest palace-wing rooms are borderline-kitschy Arabian Nights style, but the view of the Great Pyramid filling your window is a treat.”

Frommers review:

“Beautiful period furniture in an authentic 19th-century setting, Oberoi service standards, and the best Indian food in town — oh, and did I mention the view of the pyramids on the Giza Plateau from your room?”

Fodors review:

“This is the great colonial-era hotel in Cairo and has hosted almost every politician, celebrity, and member of royalty to visit Egypt, and it’s both comfortable and convenient for the pyramids. It began life in the mid-19th century as a khedivial hunting lodge, but there have been numerous expansions over the years.”

A wonderful trip to see the new GEM museum in Cairo

The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
The grounds surrounding the hotel are amazing.
Our room had a wonderful view of the Pyramids.
The Italian restaurant served excellent Italian food.
The breakfast had the most amazing bread for me and gluten free bread for my husband . Thank you Amat for your wonderful work.

We had a bath in our room which isn't practical for us. A walk in shower would be much better.

Nothing short of outstanding.

Spectacular facility. Outstanding, friendly staff. Great location for Giza pyramids and GEM.

Nothing at all to complain about. However, for guests looking to go to downtown and old Cairo, it is a somewhat longer drive

Lovely historic deluxe accommodation

It's absolutely lovely, Historic and very safe

It's very expense, especially the car ride from the airport that doesn't even meet you in the airport. Instead you have to run a gauntlet of opportuning cab drivers and cross several lanes of traffic. Then, after locating the driver, you walk a very long way with him to the car. This costs $120 one way.

No better place to stay if you’re looking for somewhere close to the Pyramids and new museum

The property really is right by the pyramids so it was perfect for our purposes. The breakfast buffet was particularly outstanding and set in a magical position. The swimming pool and surrounds and the gardens are very pretty and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. It’s also close to the new museum.

It is quite a distance from the rest of Cairo and the facilities there

totally wonderful stay - wished we'd stayed longer

Thr position of Mena House is why we chose it for our short stay at Giza. We wanted to see the new G.E.M. which is truly wonderful, and the hotel is only minutes away.
The staff were exceptionable, and in general Egyptians are very hospitable.
The hotel facilities were superb, except that one had to pay to use a special sitting room. Most hotels provide a sitting room as part of the deal for their guests.

Amazing hotel that lives up to it’s reputation- highly recommended.

Full pyramid view from room, beautiful garden for walking and pyramid views. Hotel overall has an authentic character in keeping with its long history. Loved the black & white pictures of pyramids from years back. Dining facilities and staff excellent. Bedroom and bathroom was clean.

Shower and bathroom dated.

To the restaurant staff at breakfast and dinner. Cannot do enough for you to make it a special experience. To the chef and lady who has worked at Mena house for many years in the restaurant, you are a credit to the company and we look forward to seeing you again soon. What a special place.

Absolutely lovely. Wish we had more time to enjoy the property.

The staff service was exceptional. We had several problems related to our booking and delayed luggage but the staff were incredibly helpful and extremely accommodating.

While the Mena is next to the pyramids and the view is spectacular, the change to the pyramid entrance if taking driving requires ~20m drive to get to the main entrance. I’ve heard you can take a golf cart over if walking in without a guide, but we were doing a day tour and needed a car.

8.5 everything was amazing but as it’s a 5 star hotel the service in the restaurants should be better.

We had the deluxe garden view rooms - the rooms themselves were beautiful. The bed and sofa and chairs were all very comfortable and there was a good supply of drinks and fruit in the room/fridges. The design of the room felt very luxurious and was incredibly comfortable. Room service was decently priced and the food at each restaurant was good.

There were only two main issues, one being that there was constantly celebrations or wedding parties taking place in the garden which our rooms overlooked. This itself wasn’t so much a problem, rather it was that after these events from midnight until 2am stages were disassembled and workers were cleaning the garden, this was incredibly noisy and made sleeping very difficult. I understand that these events are of course going to take place at the hotel, however considering we paid £8000+ for 4 nights, it was incredibly annoying that we were kept up so late. Additionally the service in each of the three restaurants was atrocious. We ate there every night, sometimes twice a day and every time it took almost an hour and a half for us to be served and then it took almost as long to get the bill, despite asking numerous times. I’m not entirely sure why this was such an issue as the staff doing room service and reception were very helpful and attentive, as were the staff serving at the pool.

Unbeatable location, but service and upkeep need improvement

The location is truly one of a kind, with direct views of the Pyramids that feel like a dream and make the stay unforgettable. The property itself is historic and beautiful, and the atmosphere of being so close to such a landmark is unique. Breakfast was enjoyable (though more options would have been appreciated) with an extraordinary backdrop, the pool was excellent, and our room was spacious with a comfortable bed and a balcony view that will stay with us. The grounds are impressive and carry a sense of history that adds to the overall charm. A special mention goes to Amal from 139, who showed genuine warmth, professionalism, and sincere hospitality. Her approach stood out and left a lasting positive impression on us.

We booked this stay for a birthday/Anyma concert weekend and sent a request through Booking.com a month before arrival to ask for a single bed, but we never received a reply. The hotel, although beautiful, looks tired in some areas and our room carried a dusty smell that did not match five star expectations. The main issue was room service. It was promised within 45 minutes but only arrived after more than an hour and four follow-up calls. If the delay had been communicated properly, it would have been acceptable, but the lack of transparency caused frustration and disrupted our plans. While management did come to apologize the following day, the gesture felt procedural rather than sincere. For a hotel at this price point, guests deserve clearer communication, sharper service, and rooms maintained to a higher standard.
