Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“For a posh jailbreak, try the Liberty Hotel; once the Charles Street Jail, the 298-room hotel features five bars and dining spots and a captivating, multitiered lobby.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Boston.

Lonely Planet review:

“All 298 guest rooms come with luxurious linens and high-tech amenities, while the 18 in the original jail wing boast floor-to-ceiling windows with amazing views of the Charles River and Beacon Hill.”

Forbes review:

“You’d never think that people would be clamoring to get into a Boston prison, but the Charles Street Jail — now converted into The Liberty, A Luxury Collection Hotel — is one of the city’s hottest spots.”

Fodors review:

“Since it opened in late 2007, the buzz surrounding the chic Liberty—formerly Boston’s Charles Street Jail—was at first deafening, with bankers, tech geeks, foreign playboys, and fashionistas all scrambling to call it their own.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Boston.

Telegraph review:

“Spend the night in the slammer: unique and luxurious, the Liberty Hotel is set in Boston’s former Charles Street Jail, built in 1851. In this century, the striking granite building has rooms you won’t want to leave, and some of the city’s best bars and restaurants. The old drunk tank is where locals go to play.”

Very nice hotel, interesting history but for $600/night we would like the toilet to work

nice lobby, love the history of the hotel

The toilet in our bathroom didn’t work properly. We had maintenance come up but he couldn’t fix it.

As expected but pricy

I asked for bath tub (not just shower) and got that.

Didn't replenish some of the toiletries (eg soap) Ordered taxi for 4.30 am (to get to airport) and it wasn't there.

Very good

Doorman was extremely friendly as was bar-tender and wait staff. Room was extremely comfortable

There was an issue at check in where my card was approved twice for payment. Im over a week now waiting for my card to be reimbursed from a held charge.

Change of pace. Good for a destination. Less so for a chill stay.

Good location. Good front desk. Nice gym. Comfy rooms

Very club like vibe on the weekends. Indifferent doormen.

AMAZING!! Would recommend. Lived up to all my expectations.

After visiting for drinks on a couple of occasions I was so looking forward to staying overnight, Wonderful stay. Room is vey spacious and some great touches in terms of the decoration. We were offered a glass of champagne on arrival. All the staff were so attentive and friendly. We ate at Scampo and also had drinks and food in the bar area. Breakfast at The Clink rounded out a really special weekend.

Restrooms on 2nd floor could have been cleaner

Nice hotel, offensive overdone prison theme

Amazing location and a very cool hotel. Restaurants were great, was able to get take out and eat in my room.

The jail theme is over done and crosses over the boundaries of good taste into being offensive. I appreciate the history of the building and that the hotel has chosen to lean into it. However, incarceration is not particularly funny and clearly people suffered in this building for years. Additionally, we currently live in a country with a huge incarcerated population who is mistreated and over-sentenced disproportionately based on race. Therefore, things like the "no not disturb" signs which were made to look like handcuffs and said "solitary" were deeply offensive to me. Solitary confinement and it's over use is a crime against humanity. The hotel needs to do some soul searching and pull back on its use of the prison theme, STAT.

Really loved our stay here. Staff was friendly and helpful. Would recommend to anyone coming to Boston.

Super nice hotel and the location is perfect for most activities in Boston.

Great location and great staff

The location is perfect and the facilities of the hotel were good. The staff was great at the reception, valet, restaurant, bar, etc... really enjoyed the experience and will definitely be back in the future.

The pillows could be a bit more comfortable and the size of the bedroom for a family of four is tight.

Great decoration

At the bar they were not very quick nor attentive, did not get our order right and did not really bring us all we asked for even the second time around

16 June 2021

Historic but needs freshening

Location and sense of history made it unique, comfortable bef

Service in bar inattentive, decor disjointed and led to sense of dissonance, wall coverings did not relate to history or other furnishings, towel supply not consistent with luxury label, bathroom faucet and shower very loose , lighting insufficient

We loved it; everything was just as described and amazing

lobby was incredible

$8 for half an avocado seemed a little extreme

Very luxurious experience!

The room was beautiful! We even got a courtesy upgrade to a higher floor with an amazing view of Boston. The bed was very comfortable and the mini fridge was a great touch. again, remarkable views!!!

I wish the Clink restaurant was opened to sit inside the cells but because of COVID, we were unable to. My boyfriend is a corrections officer and that was one of the main selling points of me surprising him with this trip. When I found out we could only sit in the lobby, which is still nice, I was disappointed. Not the hotels fault.

20 April 2024

They put me in an adjoining room without telling me. I was next to a room of teenagers and they were very was like they were in the room with me. The view was of the ER entrance to the hospital and windows were nit soundproof. The lobby on a Saturday night turns into a danceclub.....much more club like than advertised.

No heat in my room. No one to answer my calls.

12 February 2024

Unreasonably expensive. Poorly-equipped rooms. Good location. Clean rooms. Ok service.

Good location. Charles Str is full of nice little shops and cafes. Clean rooms. Ok service. Interesting concept with the prison remade to a hotel. Nice looking lobby.

Rooms are too empty and poorly equipped We had one bathrobe for 2 guests. No umbrella, though Boston is a rainy city. Weirdly no toilet brush (!) 71$ (!!!) for valet parking PER NIGHT. 15$ per day for a not-so-fast wi-fi. 12$ for a bottle of water in the room. Simply too expensive for no reason. Loud music in the lobby at night. Another little thing that bumped for us (considering it’s a “luxury” hotel) is that when we ordered food in the hotel - no one sent it up to our room - so we had to go downstairs at night ourselves when we expected someone to deliver it to us.
