Soho House Berlin is housed in a striking, symmetrical building in the Mitte district that dates back to 1928. Originally designed by architects Georg Bauer and Siegfried Friedländer in the functional “New Objectivity” style, it opened as Kaufhaus Jonass—Berlin’s very first credit-based department store, owned by Jewish businessmen.
The building’s subsequent history is remarkably dark and complex. During World War II, the Nazi regime seized the property and turned it into the headquarters for the Hitler Youth. Following the war, the location fell into Soviet hands and became the seat of the East German Communist Party’s Central Committee, hosting the offices of the GDR’s top leaders.
When the Soho House design team, alongside architecture firm Michaelis Boyd, took over the property to open the hotel in 2010, the building had been empty for over a decade. They artfully preserved its political scars rather than hiding them. In fact, the former office of Wilhelm Pieck, the first and only President of the GDR, was kept intact with its original wood panelling and shelves to serve as a private event space.
Today, the hotel seamlessly blends this raw, brutalist concrete skeleton with 1920s glamour and 1970s comfort. Inside, you will find exposed structural beams paired with glass chandeliers, velvet armchairs, and vintage record players. Up on the roof, a stunning swimming pool lined with green volcanic stone offers members and overnight guests a panoramic view of the Berlin skyline.
Expert reviews
“In 2010, the Soho House Berlin, a 40-room hotel and private club aimed at the city’s upwardly mobile “creative” class, became the newest tenant on Torstrasse, a street in central Berlin once peppered with squats and illegal art spaces.”
“The Berlin branch of this luxury hotel-club brings the chic atmosphere of London and New York’s Soho to the German capital. The rooms are quite large, designed in an eclectic style, with all the amenities of a luxury hotel for a moderate price.”
