Le Ryad Boutique Hotel, Marseille

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“Morocco comes to Marseille at this stylish hotel, which takes its inspiration from the riads (traditional houses) of North Africa, all woven cushions, patterned rugs and colourful throws. There’s a lovely garden, the top-floor room (‘Mogador’) has its own mini roof terrace.”

Frommers review:

“Marrakech-meets-Marseille at this Moorish inspired backstreet hotel. Styled by its former Moroccan owner, the 11 rooms are now presided over by a kindly French proprietor who remains a fountain of local knowledge. Breakfasts are a cornucopia of Arabian sweets, North African breads, and mint tea.”

All you need to know

The boutique hotel Le Ryad in Marseille city center is located on rue Sénac-de-Meilhan in the city’s 1st arrondissement. The Canebière, as well as the Saint-Charles train station and the Noailles area, with its famed market, are all within walking distance. This lovely and spectacular hotel, modeled like a Moroccan palace, is a 10-minute walk from the Old Port, 3 minutes walk from two metro stations, and a 1 kilometer from Saint-Charles railway station. Hotel Le Ryad is housed in a 19th-century building. It’s also a great place to start exploring Marseille’s Old Port, which is home to the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations.

The Le Ryad boutique hotel is built around a lush green terrace with palms, roses, and jasmine. You can sense a calm and welcoming atmosphere. This traditional Marseille home was once a famous hangout for artists from the Alcazar era, and it continues to draw art and culture enthusiasts. Le Ryad is the ideal location from which to explore this city’s many cultural and architectural gems.

The wonderful hotel Le Ryad, located in the center of downtown Marseille, provides a variety of accommodation types, including standard, superior, charming family mini-suites with all the amenities, a room with a terrace, and a modest suite in an isolated house at the back of the garden. The rooms have an exotic feel. Thanks to the Moroccan-inspired decor, warm colors, and details like wrought-iron furnishings! The spectacular staircase is the characteristic feature of the hotel and is adored by many. It has a garden, which is the hotel’s crown jewel, where you can enjoy delicious breakfasts and some oriental delicacies and fresh mint tea later in the day.

Nothing like Bookings.com advertised. Would like my money back for the last two nights we couldn’t stay there.

Staff was kind

Our room and hotel smelled like smoke and was listed as non smoking. We had to leave over health concerns.

Very disappointing

I recently stayed at this hotel and unfortunately found it to be quite disappointing. The price was not justified for the quality of the experience. The cleanliness of the room was below standard (the inside of the toilet looked horrible), and while some staff members were friendly, others lacked any sense of service orientation. The most concerning issue was discovering a mouse in our second-floor room. Despite notifying the staff, they were unable to locate it. We were offered a room change, but only for the next day since they were fully booked for the night. We were assured that a manager would be informed about the incident. However, when we checked out the next day, the staff member seemed completely unaware of what had happened. It felt like our concerns were dismissed, and we were subtly accused of fabricating the mouse sighting. We were even asked for photos, which was quite absurd as our first reaction was not to document the situation. Although the staff mentioned they would discuss the matter with the manager and would consider a refund if they found the mouse, we never heard from anyone again. Overall, the lack of communication, inadequate support during the night, and dismissive attitude towards our experience made for a very frustrating stay. I cannot recommend this hotel based on my experience.

It was ok. Good location for young people.

Good location

Originally booked a room in the hotel and was warned there was no balcony so I paid extra to stay in the annex room - we wished we had been in the main hotel. We felt it wasn’t very good value for money, it was a little grubby, we were told we had a private garden when it was actually for everyone, extra charge for coffee pods in the room. Good location though and friendly people on reception.

Quirky and Curious, not run of the mill.

If you like things slightly quirky, this is for you. Lovely garden for relaxing, generous, good value breakfast. Easy walking distance to the Vieux Port and Gare St Charles. Lovely clean white towels, unusual bathroom but with everything that you need. We enjoyed our balcony room (41) even though the climb was a bit challenging for Oldies like us, but if we can do it, you can do it!. Excellent value.

Fridge in the room was noisy and there was nothing in it. not even water. No hospitality tray. Stairs might be challenging for some.

Very good

Central location. Great staff.

84 steps to the 4th floor. But Marseille is all steps, so it's easy to take along.

Look forward to going back again.

The bed was extremely comfortable, plus lovely and wide, and the pillows were gorgeous. I don't usually sleep well and slept beautifully. The breakfast was lovely and fresh. Location was great for central Marseille. We arrived on a carnival day and the harbour was buzzing, with a great atmosphere. The local people are very friendly.

Nothing, except a pick pocket in the old part of town, but we should have been more aware of our bag opening.

Upgrade to better room for a great stay

The staff were great; friendly and did their best. Bed was comfortable. Location was convenient.

The key to the room was inconvenient. Locking ourselves inside was uncomfortable and in emergency would be dangerous. The light timer in the entry was too short. There was thick dust in places (bottom shelf of closet). No coffee pod refills in the room. Noisy first floor. Window was only fresh air and exhaust from traffic was heavy in the room.

Overall a comfortable hotel with its own faded charm.

The hotel is very small (8 rooms) across 4 floors of a tall narrow building and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It is in a good location, a few yards from La Canbiere and 10 minutes walk from the Old Port. The street is a bit scruffy but is quiet and felt perfectly safe. Breakfast is served overlooking a small planted courtyard and consists of the usual French fare with the addition of Moroccan pancakes which are delicious with honey. The room was quite large with painted walls and a tiled floor and three shuttered windows.

The bath is not particularly easy to climb in and out of and the toilet is located in a separate room. The room was a bit scruffy, and could have been cleaner. There is no lift and visitors who have difficulty with stairs need to beware - your room might be up 4 flights of stairs!

We did enjoy our stay and found Marseille to be a fascinating place

Breakfast, room was very clean and had all we required, towels and linens were changed regularly. The man on reception for the majority of the time was very helpful. It’s near La Canabiere and very convenient for the vieux port and other sites.

We were given the ground floor room for our first night, which was dark, we felt unable to open the windows and generally felt uncomfortable , although the room itself had all we needed. We had been told we would move the following day, but the man on reception was very unwilling to do so, and only did do so after we persisted. The room on the fourth floor was clean and airy , quite small ( yes it was standard room, the photos show other more spacious rooms) not a good beginning, but we felt more comfortable as the week progressed. The communal areas could do with refurbishment, chipped paint may be the Moroccan style, but not necessarily so. It looked tired, plants outside the main door were dead. First impressions count. The patio garden was lovely, but again needed a bit of attention.

Super unique and fun stay! Staff was very friendly!

This room was so cool and a great chance from the typical French hotel. There was plenty of room for us in the space!

No curtain on our shower so water got everywhere. 😬😬😬

Small, quirky hotel conveniently located for rail station and port. Very friendly staff

Small, friendly family run hotel in a quiet(ish) side street. Decent breakfast. Comfortable rooms but a lot of stairs to reach them.

Bath was in alcove off the main bathroom, with a low but wide, stone-topped parapet between them. This created an attractive appearance but was awkward when climbing into the bath and more so when climbing out when the bath was wet and slippery.

Unique hotel with great dining and bars within easy walking district.

Nice location, a scruffy street but not at all threatening. Oddles of local character. Rooms very well sized.

Can't really think of anything.

Pleasant

I liked the location and style in general. It was a stylish hotel, but with old furniture and a bit dusted, old-fashioned. Photos are better on booking. Also, please be careful - prices on their website are much more low!

It was very cold and wet in the room (November) and no decision to warm up the room, no heater, nothing. Also, the room was a bit old, not really clean and in general they should do a renovation or at least buy new things - nice lamps, etc.

Centrally located, kind hosts.

Comfortable clean room. Close to main city area, church, open market, resturants. Nice patio.

100 stairs, no lift. Difficult to bring larger suitcase up. As solo traveler I wasn’t comfortable being out at night.

Friendly staff, good location and comfortable rooms. Just a bit rough around the edges.

The property was dated but clean. The room was spacious and comfortable. I felt the pictures overstated the property.

There was no elevator. The stairs were winding and difficult, especially for older travelers. The staff was very accommodating helping with the luggage, but we still had to climb the stairs to come in and out and go down to the courtyard area for breakfast. The shower was very difficult. It was a tub with a hand held fixture. There was no curtain so the bathroom got very wet. Again, not older traveler friendly. Probable the most difficult part of the hotel was the location. Ryad is located on a residential street. This was not an issue, but the discarded furniture and garbage from numerous buildings was! We had to walk past the same discarded debris everyday. It smelled so bad it was difficult to breath. It did not set a positive image for the hotel location. It was a very convenient location, with easy access by foot to transportation, the port and restaurants.

The Ryad Hotel is a little surprising jewel off a main avenue leading to the Old Port

The Ryad Hotel was the only Booking.com hotel to change the the dates of out stay when my husband became suddenly ill! When we finally arrived the staff was accessible, friendly and helpful. There is a wonderful enclosed garden patio where we took breakfast.

There are piles of trash intermittently on the narrow street which I assume was a city maintenance problem.

A good place to base yourself. Very friendly and helpful hosts. Would definitely stay again.

Great location. V quiet, 10/15 mins from station and the old port. Had a good room at the top of the hotel with a pretty balcony.

Was surprised that there wasnt any coffee or tea included as there was a coffee machine. The room was on the fourth floor with no lift, but knew that from the reviews.

LE RYAD MARSEILLE

The room we were in was spacious, there is a mini fridge for drinks. Excellent location, 10 minutes walk to Old Port and public transportation. Staff was very good but not all speak English. We had several issues upon check-in that were resolved. Word of advice - I have mobility problems and asked for room on 1st floor. In France the first floor is what is considered to be the 2nd floor in the US. The staff did everything possible and were able to juggle rooms among guests to put me on their "1st" floor which meant that I only had to walk up and. down one flight of stairs to get to street level. The staircases are long and winding because this is an old building. There is no elevator.

Room is "rustic". Needs a bit of updating. Need better window coverings. Shutters are old and almost impossible to close. Street is very narrow and male resident across the street could look right into our room, especially at night! He spent a lot of time at his window. Area is a little iffy but we had no problem. Also bathtub was very difficult for me to get in and out but that's my mobility problem.

Nice welcome, pretty room, super garden with patio.

Good breakfast. Hotel is an art Gallery. Room decorated in Mauresque fashion, very pretty. High ceilings should be good when weather is hot, however in fall it is ok as the bedding is warm. Super nice garden. Centrally located, not far from Vieux Port and even closer from metro station Noailles. Close to Cours Julien with its numerous terraces and bars.

Breakfast options a bit complicated. Some noise in the street some times (people shouting). Difficult to find more negative things!

Very good

Great location, central to the city. Spacious rooms, cute Moroccan theme decor, nice courtyard at back, friendly staff.

The temperature in the lobby is way too hot, not air conditioned (we went in October: 14-22°C outside). There are no lifts, which makes it difficult to carry luggage up the stairs, especially with no help from staff. Water pressure in shower in abysmal.

Charming hotel, centrally located, helpful staff, lovely garden for breakfast.

The hotel is charming, centrally located (perfect location for us, given our evening engagement), and the people were very helpful. Breakfast in the garden was delightful.

The bed is soft, and it ought to be indicated in the initial information that there is no elevator.

I would be happy to return to this hotel.

Hotel with soul, perfect breakfast, great location (near the train station, near the old port, lovely quartier). Extremely friendly and loveable staff.

Well, our daughter was a bit disappointed that her alcove was forgotten after daily cleaning, but no big deal.

central, cosy, excellent hosts

The room is central, the atmosphere is cozy, and the hosts are excellent offering essential tips that make you enjoy the city more than a local and less that a tourist. I would say it was one of the best host-experience I recently had...

Value for money is poor. This is not a problem of the specific property, France is known for overpriced hotels, but some things can improve. The room is more shabby than it looks in the photos and for >100 euros per night I think I would at least deserve a proper mattress (it was too soft and definitely not flat). Like most of the city, the street in front is dirty and there are even some strange people around (prostitutes?) which is also part of the Marseille vibe, but don't justify the price. It's like paying a good BnB like a 5 star hotel.

Fabulous

The garden is lovely. A very relaxing space. Breakfast was superb. The staff were really helpful. In particular, Mohammad & Dils (I may have spelled that incorrectly). They are so welcoming and helpful.

We had the ground floor room at the end of the garden and to be honest it was a little too small for us. It is divided into two floors and one of us ended sleeping in the sofa bed downstairs.
