Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Rome
The Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, is an iconic sanctuary perched atop Monte Mario, Rome’s highest hilltop. Inaugurated in 1963 by Conrad N. Hilton, the hotel was designed by architects Ugo Luccichenti and Pier Luigi Nervi as a showcase of 1960s modular architecture. Its 15-acre Mediterranean park setting offers a tranquil escape from the city’s bustle while providing breathtaking, panoramic views of Saint Peter’s Basilica and the historic center.
Beyond its architecture, the hotel functions as a true museum. It houses an extraordinary private art collection featuring rare 18th-century antiques, 17th-century tapestries, and three priceless paintings by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The interiors, originally curated by designer Franco Albini, lean into a refined, minimalist aesthetic that perfectly complements the historical treasures displayed throughout the property.
Gastronomy is a major highlight here, as the hotel is home to La Pergola, the only restaurant in Rome to hold three Michelin stars. Led by chef Heinz Beck, it offers an exceptional rooftop dining experience overlooking the Eternal City. For relaxation, the expansive Grand Spa Club provides a decadent retreat inspired by ancient Roman baths, complete with an indoor pool under a spectacular glass dome.
While the resort offers a serene hilltop hideaway, it remains conveniently close to Rome’s legendary attractions. Guests can easily reach the Vatican, the Spanish Steps, or the Colosseum via a short drive or the hotel’s private shuttle. It remains a timeless destination for those seeking a mix of high-end luxury, historic depth, and unrivaled Roman vistas.
Expert reviews
“Arriving at the Cavalieri feels a bit like stepping into Rome’s bygone era, a time of endless manicured gardens, cheery butlers, and azure swimming pools where cocktails can be taken at any time of the day, darling.”
“Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel best exemplifies the dual nature of the Eternal City’s personality — decadent dolce vita and a magnetic sense of history. Its Monte Mario location literally sets it apart from the rest of the city, in a lush and green 15-acre park with panoramic views of Rome and Vatican City, making it a great luxury hideout.”

Surprisingly affordable for a true 5 star hotel
Property is gorgeous and amenities are fantastic. Rooms are opulent
Location is very tucked away from main town. We knew that going in but it felt further then we expected
Also the rooms had a bit of a musty smell to them

Great location to see the city
The views of Rome were truly spectacular. Sitting at the pool looking out over town breath taking
Ok you can’t really walk to town when it’s hot but an uber is like 15 euro

Great family stay
Great facilities including pool, gym, and kids club. Location slightly out from centre, however felt nice to leave the busy centre each day. All the team were great
The price of food and drinks was punchy

Luxury stay in Rome!
Exceptional customer care and attention to every detail. One of the best properties I’ve stayed in.

I like this hotel.
Surrounded by greenery like a park, we were able to enjoy fresh air and spend time comfortably on sunbeds by the outdoor pool without any crowds. The staff were friendly, the facilities were clean, and we ate well and relaxed at the restaurant, bar, and other amenities.
There was almost no information available about hotel facilities. There were no instruction materials or guides in the room. I had no idea when or where breakfast was served, when the spa and swimming pool were open, where the park walking trails were located, or what the restaurant menu offered—none of this was provided. I eventually found some information through a pop-up info panel on Google Maps, but before that, neither the hotel website nor the room itself offered any guidance, which was quite frustrating. Am I supposed to call the front desk every time I need basic information? That shouldn’t be the case. The hotel needs to improve by either clearly posting all relevant information on the website or providing a printed guidebook in the room.
Transportation options outside the hotel are extremely limited, with taxis being the only available option. The nearest bus stop is about a 10-minute walk away, and there are no supermarkets nearby. Everything has to be taken care of within the hotel premises.
The massage therapist was too old and was not able to perform the massage properly.

Nothing special. We will consider other options in the future.
Nothing to add.
We have booked imperial room (not a city view room), and without in advance nor on arrival notification we have got connecting room where other guests (normal guests) have stayed.
We strongly believe that hotel should have warned us about connecting room and this option, but this was not a case - same has been shared on check-out and without notable respons, not worth to share even. As we have stayed in hotel previously (in 2016), we have noticed quality of breakfast ingredients has dropped down and hence this is not in range of 5stars hotel.
Summary: we are not going to consider this hotel in the future.

One of the best ways to experience Rome.
The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The facilities were also very nice, and the cleanliness was top-notch.
The hotel isn’t the best place to explore central Rome, but they do offer a shuttle that goes to and from the center several times a day. The food in the room service was really good, but there was an 8€ charge for each delivery.

Our great very next stay at the hotel, thank you!
Great service and faciities
Charging of an electric car is quite a hustle. I used the valet parking, but had to personally go there to activate the charging, unsuccessfully as the application is not self explanatory and there was nobody to provide any help.
You should definitely reconsider how charging is organized as it is in stark contrast with the rest of a wonderful experience.

Best hotel in Europe by far.
The staff are exceptional and the hotel is a piece of art in itself. Loved it there and can’t won’t stay anywhere else in Rome.

Overpriced and sadly marked as 5 stars
The hotel is very beautiful, with nice decorations, spacious room, comfortable linen. The only thing is that the rooms and the whole common areas of the hotel were very cold, seem like the heating was off or not always working. On the ground floor, they had nice atmosphere with live music, but it was also very cold, didn’t feel cozy to stay and relax with the music and a drink.
The good thing about this hotel is that they have this complimentary food service during the day, so if you feel you need snacks you can have it with a nice view.
The room dining needs to improve, the food is too simple and overpriced, nothing special, a simple one slice of ham and 1 slice of cheese toast was 21 euro, was so sad, I was expecting a bit better food.
The spa was average in my opinion, there was external guest also coming. Staff was rude. Need to improve this area, few maintenance needed.
The bathroom was good illumination, nice decorated. Unfortunately the water was a bit clogged in our bathroom and it was very smelly when we’ve arrived. Would be nice if they would clean a bit better or add some fresh perfume. The showers were good, but the glass box needs to be longer to prevent to flood, every time we would shower the water spilled out leaving the bathroom completely wet.
They need to do some small maintenance to improve.
Breakfast was really upsetting, I was really expecting an “imperial breakfast” as they describe it. Unfortunately not too many options and small simple a la carte. Definitely I had much better breakfast in other hotels. They need to offer toasts options, like avocado toast, different types of eggs fresh, made in time, there was no pancakes, healthy options either. Was more like overall pastries, boiled egg and omelette. I didn’t see the worth so I left. Also the corridors and hall were alsways super cold in winter. The heaters were not on maybe, I saw some hk cleaning some rooms and the balconies were open making the cold air enter to the corridors. There was constructions and a lot of noise in our room, we could basically hear all conversations from our room. Staff were arrogant in restaurant and spa. I had difficulty to communicate with them, most of the staff don’t speak English well enough. The location was pretty far from the city

This is a truly stunning property but the hotel
The hotel is truly beautiful with an amazing reception area, fantastic restaurants and unparalleled views of Rome.
The hotel has a stunning adult swimming pool but my experience was ruined by kids who were screaming, throwing toys all over the pool and jumping on swimmers. It was impossible to have a quiet relaxing swim as kids occupied the adult pool (there is a beautiful kids swimming pool that was always empty as all kids were in the adult pool). One child went to the loo right next to the stairs to the swimming pool in front of everyone - no one has said anything. The child then just jumped into the water. The hotel is very expensive so I have reasonable expectations not to swim in a pool where people go to the loo.

Outstanding and memorable...
Front Desk Staff - Anna and Julio were amazing in assisting with all the details and extremely helpful.
Imperial Lounge - All staff made us feel like family and it was memorable and comfortable.
Spa and Sauna - Really private and relaxing full facility with Roman Spa.
Although we had a room with Imperial Club Lounge access, the icing on the cake would have been a room with a view of Rome skyline without the Pylon that looks horrid with city view.
The Jacuzzi was warm would have preferred more warmth - though the sauna helped with that.

I loved our stay in this hotel
Luxurious clean great staff
It’s a bit far from city center. I suggest the shuttle has more stops for comfort of guests

Lovely location and dedicated staff. Will be my choice next time I visit Rome.
Staff were simply the best. Location wise the fact that it was a little away from three city was the best thing about it. Not to forget that great views of Rome City.
The hotel looks a little dated. This may appeal for those who have a taste for the nostalgic. I wish they had a games room which had ping pong or billiards as they have a lot of area in the level where the business centre is. This will allow one to spend time from activity apart from pool and Spa.
