Hotel Hüttenpalast, Berlin

Hobrechtstraße 65/66, 12047 Berlin, Germany (show on map)

In Berlin’s trendy Neukölln neighborhood, Hotel Hüttenpalast offers an indoor glamping experience. Created by locals Silke Lorenzen and interior designer Sarah Vollmer, this quirky retreat reimagines hospitality by letting you sleep in retro campers and custom wooden cabins parked entirely inside a building. It playfully parodies Schrebergartenglück—the traditional German joy of tending to a tiny allotment garden.

The building itself carries a slice of Berlin’s industrial history, operating as a bustling vacuum cleaner factory back in 1910. Instead of bulldozing the architecture, the founders preserved the high ceilings and classic factory windows, transforming the cavernous production floors into cozy, weather-proof indoor campsites.

The design is a collaborative effort, with local artists customizing each retro caravan. You can sleep in “Snow White,” a tiny plywood trailer originally engineered in the 1960s to be light enough for the iconic East German Trabant car to tow. Another highlight is the “Old Palace” cabin, a two-story structure wrapped in 100-year-old wood paneling salvaged directly from the factory’s original manufacturing rooms.

It acts as a creative, communal village. Guests can wander between birch trees in their flip-flops, share coffee at mismatched picnic tables, or retreat to a leafy backyard garden oasis that blocks out the chaotic Berlin nightlife.

Expert reviews

The Guardian review:

“The name Hüttenpalast – which translates loosely as ‘hut palace’ –gives some idea of what to expect from Berlin’s most idiosyncratic accommodation option. It’s a former vacuum cleaner factory in the hip Neukölln district and offers ‘rooms’ in a range of converted vintage caravans and repurposed huts in an indoor setting among fake grass and fairy-lit silver birches.”

Warm friendly welcome, easy location to navigate the city with good food options nearby.

The staff were so friendly, thank you and great communication when our plane was delayed. we were warmly welcomed and shown around. The facilities were extremely clean and very large space and communal areas . The breakfast was absolutely delicious :) Staff so friendly and helpful will aim to return xo

A topper on the bed would have made it a little softer but still slept pretty well x

Quirky, fun stay at Huttenpalast!

Quirky concept and good fun. Plenty of spaces to sit and relax outside of the caravans. Very friendly staff and check in was easy! Bathrooms and the whole space felt very clean.

The caravans are quite small - no issue with this as they are cosy but you really do need to close the windows for privacy and also to keep the snoring sounds out! But when they are closed it would be useful to have a fan or some AC in each unit for airflow. The pillows are unusual, they are like large flat sheets and had to be folded up to make them comfortable.

Unique place, wonderful people, best breakfast ever!

Hüttenpalast is a wonderful place, run by wonderful people!
We had one of the loft rooms, which was spacious, airy, and beautifully designed - simplicity and elegance rather than chintz and velour! Very clean and everything worked perfectly, palatial wet room, and even an espresso machine.

The main body of the hotel is of course the ‘Hüttenpalast ‚ a large hall with different vintage caravans and a couple of huts, all vintage chic and cosy sleeping arrangements, surrounded by plants and various benches, French doors opening to the garden where guest can sit whenever the weather allows. We chose the loft rooms, because we wanted a private bathroom. The ‘huts’ and caravans share a couple of bathrooms. We did hanker after staying in one of them next time, though, they looked so cosy and charming!

Breakfast is a feast! Overnight oats with many different toppings, organic yogurt , fabulous sourdough bread, jams, Nutella, salami, cheeses, fruits, juices, freshly brewed coffee and loose leaf tea! Even a waffle maker with little jars of ready made batter for making your own waffle!
Staff can’t do enough for you, offering more of anything, cheerful, friendly, and chatty - but only if you want to. No empty servility here, just people doing their job with love and care.

The complex Hüttenpalast is in comprises artist’s studios and ordinary flats, so although reception is only open until 6 pm, it feels very safe, because people live around you. They will make arrangements if you arrive later, and you get keys once you are there. The area is very multicultural and young, a proper, lived-in quarter. Lots and lots of different restaurants, take-aways , with food from all over the world and in any budget, small shops, and late-night kiosks. My daughter and I both felt safe walking around, and the public transport options are fab, clean, frequent, on time, and cheap!

Better pillows! They were a bit flat and bumpy.

Can't wait to come back and send my friends along :)

I loved staying at this special place! The owner(s) waited for me even though I did not expect this and was ready for a quick staff check-in. Throughout my stay, everyone was super friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was delicious and made for any taste or need ;) Simply loved this little home gem for travellers in the middle of wild Berlin!

Great quirky stay

Stayed in the little silver camper. Was very comfortable and aesthetically beautiful. The shared facilities were clean and spacious. There are separate male and female toilet/shower rooms. There was a kettle and coffee /tea making facilities and water. There were board games, books and information pamphlets for local attractions. The courtyard was a lovely space also.

It’s a shared space, noises can carry quite a lot. Even with noise cancelling headphones on.

Quirky but fun place to stay

It looks strange but it works really well - I stayed in one of the cabins and it was incredibly comfortable and very quiet. Shared toilet/showers are very clean. Arrangements to get in and out of the block are straightforward, while It's in an interesting area with lots of little bars. The staff are great.

It is a little bit eerie visiting the bathroom during the night and hearing your neighbours snoring! You get used to it, though!

Very clean, quirky space with friendly staff

Quirky fitout and very friendly staff - Sylvia was welcoming and provided all the info about the facilities. Also, like a lot of the reviews, bathrooms and bedding were fresh and clean and that also was very welcome.

It's not a negative so much as a comment: it needed a bit of effort to find the first time around.

Brilliant stay, would absolutely recommend to a friend.

We loved the big personality of the communal spaces both inside and outside. The hosts were all really friendly and helpful, as were the staff in the cafe where we had brilliant breakfasts on both mornings of our trip. Our cabin was cosy and private, but it was also fun to sit 'outside' at our bistro table.

Sharing a shower and toilet area is never ideal... But at least it was all very clean and tidy.

Adorable hostel with lovel staff!

The receptionist was so lovely and the caravans are adorable. There was a surprisingly comfortable amount of space and the available tea and water in the outside communal area are a really nice touch. There were people in three other caravans but we never came across them in the shower space / bathrooms so it felt a lot more private than most hostels too.

The mattress is very thin and the pillows are uncomfortable. the issue isn’t enough to have prevented us from sleeping but it did slightly reduce the cosiness.

Very nice stay, good location

It was charmingly decorated and very clean.

No sound isolation whatsoever, noise waking us at night repeatedly, even though the other guests were not a loud crowd.
