The breakfast!

1. We arrived at 7pm, were accommodated in room 815 and got to bed at 11pm. Immediately after midnight we woke up because of a very loud noise similar to the one made by a big electrical/ventilating equipment which was just behind one of the walls. We called the reception, they sent a guy from the technical department who didn’t seem to be surprised. After another 20 minutes and several phone calls, another guy came with the keys of another room and proposed us to move there. We had to re-pack everything, move to the room 2001 and unpack our luggage again. We went back to bed at 1:20am, but our sleep was gone, we slept less than three hours that night as we had a full day tour starting in the morning. The room 2001 had a smaller bathroom, a smaller dressing room, no fruit platter (which remained in the previous room 815), the switch of the lamp next to our bed didn’t function, the shower drain was not working properly and the shower floor was flooding so that dirty water was pouring over our feet and the tap that adjusted the water temperature was almost blocked, my wife couldn't move it. I tried to talk with one of the managers in the morning, the receptionist told us that the manager was not available, but he would call me back. Nobody called me back and they fixed only the switch of the lamp. When I complained again about the shower they recommended to me to use the bathtub!! 2. For a 2 night stay the deposit of 3087.8 CNY (445 USD) was unexpected as it was not mentioned on booking.com website. It was sent back when I left but got to my account only 3 days later. The additional cost related to this amount was 6% Alipay tax (3% when I payed and 3% when I got the money back), 2% the commission related to the exchange (1% each way) and 2.2% the difference between the exchange rates when buying CNY and selling CNY when I got the money back), so an additional 10.2% x 3087.

Fantastic location and beautiful rooms

Breakfast was not 5 stars.. we had to wait 20 mins to be seated one day, and the food was overall very basic. Eggs arrived cold, the buffet food was all very average quality. Disappointing for an otherwise world class hotel.

Arrived just before the 3pm check in time. Had to wait almost 4 hours for our room to be ready. Had to sit in the lobby and wait until almost 7pm.

Unfortunately, most of the staff do not speak English, which makes communication difficult. The service in the restaurants is well below expectations, and the gym facilities are outdated, with equipment that appears to be over 20 years old, many of them broken and in very poor condition.

The location of this property is second to none - right on the Bund. The heritage wing of the building is genuinely beautiful, with authentic charm and timeless design. Unfortunately, the hotel appears to be dominated by the other wing, which makes the heritage side feel all the more exclusive.

If you’re going to stay here, make sure you book the heritage wing. The rooms in the newer, non-heritage section are, in my opinion, tacky, dated, and stale. They’ve tried to mimic the authentic vintage decor of the heritage building but completely missed the mark. The heritage side has beautiful hardwood floors, genuine craftsmanship, and a timeless atmosphere. The non-heritage side felt more like a tired four-star hotel in Vegas — dated soft furnishings, and even a lingering unpleasant aroma. The breakfast buffet was a huge letdown — 3/10 at best. This was only included because we paid an extra couple hundred dollars per night, and it’s simply not worth it. Poor selection, mediocre quality, and genuinely terrible coffee. Absolutely not what you’d expect from the Waldorf brand. Finally, service was inconsistent and often poor. Many staff members struggled with English, even basic serving staff. Smiles were rare, and truly helpful service was rarer still.

A very luxurious hotel, with big and comfortable rooms and beds. The inside is very nicely designed. The stuff was friendly and helpful.

Rate of breakfast are outrageous, as the breakfast does not look that different from other places.

The location. The bed room and bathroom was amazing. Remote control of the room was very nice. The hotel public areas are marble and historic.

The room had a nail in the floor that was not covered and needed to be fixed. While the room was impressive, when looking very carefully the room was not modern in terms of refined finishing in certain areas (wardrobe lighing, etc. The pool staff were very direct and seem overbearing. Somewhat too direct and can be seen as a little rude. The pool was fine.

Jupert, the assistant manager for the Long Bar, was the best part of this hotel! He really made us feel welcomed to the hotel and we had a lovely time at the bar.

Simply exceptional in every way. Superb staff, hotel and location. Couldn’t have been any better. We loved this Hotel.

Every thing was perfect

We had a room with a view of the Bund and every evening we were able to sit with a cup of tea and watch the light show. We really enjoyed the Long Bar in the hotel and the bar manager went out of his way to make our experience a delight. He also gave us very good advice on places to visit and wonderful restaurant's within walking distance of the hotel. The old world charm of the original building was truly special.

Really nothing about the hotel but Shanghai can be a challenge for Wetern travellers due to restrictions on internet etc.

, breakfast was boring.especially if you stay for more than 2 days. The same food was served every day with few options of western food. I suggest to reconsider the breakfast menus. The image of the hotel in the advertise t should be honest. Its not straight on the bind its in the back of the historical building.

The staff were attentive and fluent in English. Location was close to the bund. The rooms were clean.

We booked for 3 people and the beds were just 2 queen SINGLE beds. There must be a description discrepancy as one detail states “2 large double beds” and the other stated “2 queen beds”. The amenities in the room were also only prepared for two people, 2 towels, 2 pairs of shoes, etc. The view of the bund is not visible, which I noted, but the price of the room was just not worth it. I would rather stay somewhere else next time.

Beautifully decorated and located right opposite the bund. Great breakfast buffet and delicious dinner buffet too. They use Aesop as amenities and Lindt chocolate on the bed before bedtime.

It was a wonderful stay at the Waldorf Astoria, the staff were kind, attentive and their service is exceptional. The location is also great, walkable distance to tourist attractions such as Yuyuan and East Nanjing Road. Would definitely stay there again if we were to visit Shanghai in the future

Excellant position on the Bund, best view ever from our room!! Very comfortable room and large choice for breakfast. Only the additional food in the hotel is relatively expensive, better find a restaurant or tea-room in the surrounding.

The reception did not do the exchange for us because we were Iranian .

we stayed in lux suit and it was great size,very luxury and nice.Comfortable bed,big bathroom,everything was perfect,location is also on the bund,close to everything.. Have in mind to prepare translator on your phone,because the language barrier is everywhere,nobody speaks english but i saw this everywhere in all hotels.I liked really everything

We arrived almost 11:30 pm and all the restaurants /cafe/bars were closed. The only option to dine was a room service.

It was exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble for the amazing staff. Breakfast was amazing 10/10 for everything.

The location is superb! Just at the famous the bund. The room’s amenities are good. The shower, shampoo, conditioner are using the branded products. The charging sockets got USB points very convenient for electronic devices. The toilet mirror got tv inside. That is cool! I was staying at 10th floor there was view of the bund from the room already.

The only thing is after I got the room key I needed to pass my luggage tag to concierge to let them send to the room. Not just pass the tag to the front desk during check in and they arrange to send the luggage which other hotels are doing.

Every night, after five in the morning, room 310 is noisy. The problem is that some mechanical device is being turned on in the building, perhaps washing.

Ideal location. Two exits - one to the Bund on the river, other to taxis. Breakfast is good + personnel helpful, bringing extras (like fresh avocado) on request. Gym small but with pretty much everything you need on the road. Nice bar downstairs with live music playing on friday + they had some funny sculptures exhibition on the way to the Bund. Lots of good restaurants around.

Rooms good except for one thing: we had some “old-castle” smell in the room + flying insects (moles?).

Breakfast ask for pot of boiling water on both occasions came lukewarm. Also had to keep reminding of my breakfast order as they would forget!

Breakfast was very good. The view from the room (river view) was awesome. Location is perfect. Overall, the ambience, the long bar and music there, helpful staff are superb. Will definitely stay there again.

Though, for coffee I would like a coffee pot and bigger cups, rather than small cups and ask to bring 'one more' several times. Of course, I would like a lower price, but good things do not come cheap.

A genuine 5 star hotel in a wonderful renovated historical building. Friendly staff makes our stay a great one. We love this hotel.

Great view of the bund

The location is the best. The room, facilities and staff are all top-notch. The room is spacious, the beds are comfortable. Best of all is the AC in hot summer days in Shanghai, which is pleasantly adequate as in the US.

The only thing we’d like seeing improvements on is the breakfast options. The chinese breakfast options lack the basic noodle soup, wonton soup, soup dumplings and fried dough. The western style breakfast items such as egg Benedict, avocado toast and omelets are not made right.
