Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“Forty guest rooms fill a row of Victorian mansions right by the art museum. The lower-cost rooms at The Inn on Ferry Street are small but have deliciously soft bedding; the larger rooms feature plenty of antique wood furnishings.”

A wonderful, historic home with nice amenities and a pathetic breakfast.

These historic homes are just beautiful. The rooms are well furnished with very comfortable bedding. It is a beautiful neighborhood.

The breakfast was embarrassing..really lacking. I would expect a charming place like this to do something a little special. Toast, bagel, cold cereal, hard boiled egg and an orange…bleak and boring.

We would stay again!

It was very warm and inviting. I felt like a guest in an historic home. Porch areas with seating. Easy check in and entrance. Right on the free shuttle line to riverfront.

It was great for our stay.

I lovely convenient inn in Detroit

The inn is made up of a series of elegant historic old mansions which are all very nice and atmospheric. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The location is great, very convenient to many of the museums with nice restaurant options not far away. The continental breakfast did not have a very wide array of options nor was well-stocked so was the big disappointment. Also out first night dome of the younger guests made a lot of noise partying late at night. That was quieted after a while. Parking on premises is available for an extra fee.

See above!

Fabulous

Location is excellent. We were able to easily walk to the DIA and restaurants. Also just a few minute drive to the Fisher Theatre and other locations we visited. Quiet, clean, and comfortable. Enjoyed learning some of the history.

Bed was a little soft.

Nice budget option in a restored Victorian mansion in a great neighbourhood close to all the museums

Great location - minutes walking distance from the DIA and other museums. Our room was in a restored Victorian mansion, so lots of old charm and details. There was a lounge area on the ground floor if you wanted to sit and relax. The bed was a double and it took up most of the room, but it was very comfortable. Some free and paid parking options on the street; otherwise, it cost $15 plus tax per night for hotel parking. Coffee and light breakfast options were set out in the building next door to us from 7-10 am. Coffee, toast, cereal, hard boiled eggs - enough to provide sustenance until lunch. Staff were friendly.

To be fair, we booked the “budget” room so we knew it would be small. In fact, the woman who checked us in made sure to mention this, probably so we would keep our expectations in check. The double room was at the top of 3 flights of stairs (no elevator). Not a lot of space to put bags and things. No fridge. There was a window air conditioner and the bed was right up against it (no headboard) so the air blew on whoever was on that side. It had also clearly been leaking so there were towels stuffed all around it. Shower took a while to heat up and the pressure was weak - likely due to old plumbing.

A cozy, charming, romantic place to lay your head in Detroit.

I love the old historical building. It’s beautiful and cozy. It has the old world charm and romance you’d expect which made me love it more. The continental breakfast is good and if you want something more hearty, hit up BasBlue next door (weekdays) which was yummy. The location is perfect for the QLine that is free and takes you through downtown. For those new to an old property, it’s squeaks and creaks which is something to get used to - not criticism, just a note.

The weekday rates are fair but I thought the weekend rate was high.

The location is perfect! Right next to the DIA and Qline stations. The neighborhood is quiet and feels safe. The buildings and rooms are unique. Not a lot of choices for breakfast but the foods taste good.

Great walkability, peaceful, and comforting vibe. If I am in Detroit again I would definitely stay again. I would reques

Very unique and had a calming vibe. The staff was outstanding! The bed and bedding was phenomenal!

A few extra towels would have been appreciated, if nothing else an extra hand towel. The room needed a 2nd trash can. Also an addition of a small table by the chair. We had requested extra pillows, that must have gotten lost in the message relay. Lastly when I booked the room l requesting a king size bed it showed me a particular room, which I thought that was the room I was booking. The room we received was a totally different room. The price was a bit high in addition to paying for parking. When asked about parking I didn’t realize the cost was per night.

Detroit - A beautiful experience !

A special location, very beautiful and quiet. It is very close to the city center and very easy acces from highway. The rooms were clean, everything needed was prepared and the bed mattress was of good quality.

We didn't like the breakfast, although the recommendation said it was fabulous. The bread was a little old and the food offer limited. Maybe the price is a little high, but the location makes up for it.

Location to DIA (Detroit Institute Art) was within walking distance. We didn't know there was a free Q-line to down town that we would have used if we knew about it.

Lovely quiet spot for a Detroit visit

The location was perfect for visiting the Detroit Art Institute. The room was comfortable. The house was quiet and very nice for relaxing between activities.

The bathroom towels were small and one was very old.

Terrific residential style hotel.

A lovely residential-type hotel (an old restored mansion) in a good downtown location, near the art centre. Good (paid) parking. Terrific buffet breakfast.

Not many restaurants are within walking distance, but not too far away(free trolly).

Loved everything!!!

Loved the room, the houses and landscaping

The q-line was recommended to go to the Fisher Theater. That would not have been safe when the theater got out at 11 p.m. We drove and parked right at the theater in their parking garage.

the buildings were beautiful from the outside, but the inside did not match.

The staff, especially Trinity, was very helpful and kind.

The room was not as expected. The carpet was disgusting - stains and worn. The thermostat was not working so the first night we did not sleep well as it was so hot. The water pressure was ridiculously poor. I could not shower as the pressure was not strong enough to be able to wash my hair. The furniture in the house had also clearly not been dusted in a long time also.

I would stay here again if I needed to

Breakfast was delicious and enough choices. Room comfotable. Parking was easily accessible. Also the location was accessible to major roads making it easy to travel to local tourist areas. All staff very cordial and accomodating.

Only problem was the stairs to drag our luggage up and down. I would also suggest more hooks in the bath area and behind doors to hang travel items.

Very good

A beautiful building in the quiet university area. The hotel had free water and coffee all day. It is not close to the centre of Detroit but the centre is easily accessible by public transport. Breakfast was good but not very varied.

We had 2 really nice rooms with a balcony. I found it difficult to sleep as the garden lights were on all night and the blinds didn't darken the room sufficiently.

Love my visit. If I can, I will be back.

Loved my room, breakfast was very good and appreciated. The living room was pleasant. My son and his fiancée had an adjoining room which was great because I needed help with my luggage. Location was convenient as I was involved in a WSU campus event.

Didn't realize until the next morning, there was a space heater in the room. The a/c/heat were inoperable and the temperature in my room got down to 68 degrees which was colder than I liked. My son adjusted the heater and the next nights were much more comfortable.

Love my visit. If I can, I will be back.

The morning breakfast was appreciated and very complete. The staff was so friendly. Check in was well handled. My son and his fiancée had an adjoining room.

If I had been alone, I would have requested a room on the first floor as I have difficulty with steps. Also, I don't know if there was an option for handrails in the shower/bathtub but probably should have inquired. Also, I wouldn't recommend the Cafe, which I believe is a separate entity, as it felt very unfriendly with a limited menu for breakfast. We had wanted to try the Cafe one morning during our visit- mistake.

We were in town for family visit & a show at The Fisher. Great location for both and so fun to stay in these histor

beautiful old homes, lighted on-site parking for a small fee, comfortable bed, great breakfast with a generous timeframe. super friendly & helpful staff, overall a very clean room and breakfast area.

Overall very clean but a couple major cobwebs in the corner of our bedroom and in the bathroom. The ceilings are very high, but it would be better to not have cobwebs! Also, the first night was very calm & quiet but the second night someone ran up & down the stairs, slammed doors, and were up all hours walking around above us. Then decided to play the piano in the main room at a little after 9am on a Sunday. Not really a major issue or anything the property could have done, but it wrecked our visit a little

Wonderful and we will be back again!

Beautifully restored properties. There are 4 houses operated by this inn and each one has its own character and charm. The complementary breakfast is in the Scott House and is very nice. They are still in the process of completing some updates but the rooms are quite comfortable presently. Beds and pillows are great.

Still can use some TLC but coming along nicely.

Perfect stay in a perfect location.

This Inn was exactly what I was hoping for when I booked--and more. The staff, including Trinity, were exceptionally friendly and welcoming. They answered my questions quickly. We were especially happy to be able to leave our car parked for several hours after room check out as we were visiting an attraction within walking distance. I felt special staying in our room/in our building (Owen House). The continental breakfast was adequate and in keeping with the reasonable room rate.

characterful accommodation

location for the DIA was good. currently there is free transportation to uptown Detroit which was useful.

The room was smaller than appeared from the website. Being on the 2 nd floor ( uk) third floor (US) with heavy cases it was a bit of a trek. Breakfast was good but a bit hit and miss as to what was available. There were no eateries in the immediate location.
