Trunk Hotel, Tokyo

150-0001 Tokyo-to, 5-31 Jingumae, Shibuya-Ku, Japan (show on map)

TRUNK(HOTEL) in Tokyo is a pioneering boutique property that redefined the city’s hospitality scene when it opened in Shibuya in 2017. Founded by entrepreneur Yoshitaka Nojiri, the hotel was built with a philosophy of “socializing”—an effort to encourage guests to live authentically and contribute to their local community. The architecture, designed by Mount Fuji Architects Studio, features a distinctive angular, dark-grey structure softened by lush greenery, helping it blend naturally into its neighborhood.

The interiors are a rich, textural experience. Designed by Jamo Associates, they feature upcycled materials alongside custom furniture that honors Japanese craftsmanship. A standout feature is the TRUNK(STORE), a socially conscious take on a convenience store that prioritizes small-batch, locally sourced goods. This commitment to “local-first” extends throughout the property, from the locally made amenities in the guest rooms to the community-focused events held in its exhibition spaces.

Beyond its walls, the hotel is perfectly positioned for exploring Tokyo’s trendiest districts. It is located just a short walk from the iconic Shibuya Crossing, one of the world’s busiest intersections, and the fashion-forward streets of Harajuku. For a bit of peace, the serene Meiji Jingu Shrine is nearby, offering a forested escape from the urban rush.

Whether you are enjoying Japanese-Western fusion dishes in the hotel’s vibrant lounge or browsing the nearby boutiques of Omotesando, TRUNK(HOTEL) acts as a grounded, creative base for discovering the heart of modern Tokyo.

Expert reviews

CN Traveler review:

“Pocketed in between Shibuya and Harajuku, Trunk (Hotel)’s two low-rise buildings are four stories each. Hardly a stone’s throw from some of Tokyo’s most hipster streets, it’s a high cost, but you’re really booking a whole lifestyle.”

New York Times review:

“Trunk Hotel, a boutique hotel in Jingumae, is as popular with locals for its bar and restaurant as it is with out-of-town travelers looking for minimalist rooms in a trendy neighborhood.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Tokyo.

Telegraph review:

“This much-needed creative addition to Tokyo’s hotel scene is contemporary and stylish with a modern Japan design edge. It’s located in the heart of Tokyo’s lively Shibuya district and is just seconds from hipster-magnet Cat Street, the epicentre of Harajuku’s famed street fashion culture.”

Underwhelming and overpriced. Would not recommend.

Great location at the top of Shibuya, easy to walk to Harajuku village, Omotesando and Aoyama. Choice is limited at breakfast, but it is a good breakfast.

Staff are really nice, but very hit and miss depending who you get.

Punishingly underwhelming hotel, clever photography and staging hide a dated, tired and basic space that is wildly over-priced for what it is - even by Tokyo standards.

Dark rooms are cramped and full of furniture. We could not open both bags on the floor at the same time. Bathroom was maybe 1.4 x 1.6m so only one person could go in there at a time. Feels a bit like you are staying in a teenagers bedroom

Loud event space next door

Despite having the space for it, the bed is pushed up against the wall, so you have to shuffle down the bed to get in and out waking your partner every time

Great location; chaotic hotel

Breakfast was surprisingly awful; tried avocado toast & eggs benny; cluttered plate w/ god-awful sausage, which took an inordinately long time. No regular granola; only yogurt, which we had to pay for. Better a simple buffet....

The hotel is at the intersection of hipsterville & a railway platform. The owner has figured out how to sweat every asset of the hotel (entrance leads to two pvt-function halls) & a Wework-like lobby; all of this is great for his biz, but not so nice for hotel residents, where just navigating the lobby can give you a headache.

Poorly designed rooms: no closet space nor place for bags; a bed pushed up against a wall and a needlessly long desk, which itself has to be navigated by stepping over an extended bed platform?!

bussing boutique hotel in great area

The hotel is in an excellent location and is a buzzing, vibrant property. There is plenty of great shopping and restaurants in the are, and its a western traveler-friendly neighborhood; but at the same time, the property still had many Japanese guests and didn't feel "touristy." The rooms are well equipped and we enjoyed having a balcony with ours. The hotel offers luggage shipping which is convenient, and also helped with restaurant recommendations/bookings ahead of our arrival.

There aren't many amenities at this property (for the price). There is no pool, onsen/spa, or even rooftop area. The restaurant breakfast was tasty, but limited compared to other properties we stayed in throughout Japan.

Lovely to find such a hotel

The staff were well organised and international..And our room so large and cosy..a hard task for hotels these days. The balcony was a bonus and even though the location was close to all the Shibuya hustle and bustle..our room and open air balcony with treed outlook very quiet..yet another hard thing for hotels to achieve..beds..music..room accoutrements very high standard as was the breakfast. We were very sad to leave

Can't fault the Trunk experience..

Superb! Cannot wait to go back!!!

We loved the staff! They were incredibly helpful, vibrant, open and such a joy to interact with! The atmosphere and decor was so stylish and the rooms were impeccably clean and comfortable! The service offering was fantastic! We were offered barista coffees upon arrival and the staff were so attentive! The proximity to Shibuya and Omotesando was a big plus! Yet, the hotel offered serenity too.

The loft room seemingly had an after-thought table shelf added for the kettle and coffee corner. It would’ve been nicer without it to give guest access to the window and a place to sit. It was cumbersome to manoeuvre around with less than a foot wide to get to the kettle. Just a thought, as really, it’s not needed.

Great location. Very crowded

Great location and fantastic service. The place is beautiful.

The main issue we had is they do events daily for non hotel guests, and the lobby is always packed with outside people, so you can't enjoy the bar or lobby area peacefully.

Overall it was a terrific experience and I look forward to returning.

The staff were excellent, the balcony, the restaurants, personalised and thoughtful touches

The bed and room would have been tight for 2 people, especially without a work space.

Buzzy, design-forward hotel in fantastic location

Loved the design and location and buzzy atmosphere - in the heart of Shibuya / Cat Street. Great shopping and restaurants within walking distance. Thoughtful room details included pajamas, turn down service, fresh flowers changed daily, and sleep spray

No explanation of amenities and restaurants provided upon check in

Highly recommended for an enjoyable modern stay in Tokyo but don’t bring huge suitcases!

Clean, modern, aesthetically appealing, young, hip, the place to be in Tokyo, really nice young employees who went out of their way to make me feel special. When I arrived they welcomed me personally and fried my suitcases from the rain. The house cleaning was impeccable. I’ve never seen a more perfectly made bed. The design was simple. The lounge has the best vibe for working on your laptop with an oatmilk vanilla latte from the bar.

Spacious rooms are rare in Japan, so I wasn’t too surprised, but I did find it unusual that the room had no cupboards or drawers. I was traveling solo, and even then, it felt tight to fit both myself and my large luggage comfortably – it would be challenging with two people and their bags!

When I mentioned it to the front desk, they were very understanding and explained that space is indeed a premium in Tokyo. I adapted by keeping my clothes in my suitcase and laying out what I needed on the floor. It worked out fine, and ultimately, that’s part of the experience here in Japan!

My new favorite!

I don't usually gush about hotels but this may be my new favorite hotel ever. Everyone on the staff made me feel like I was their new best friend. And the rooms were trendy but so cozy. Wonderful hotel!

Great local and trendy hotel with lovely breakfast in Shibuya

This is a wonderful hotel, convenienty located in Shibuya area. It is a Japanese style hotel, so the rooms are smaller than in the US or big chain hotels, but have a lot of comfort and charm. The staff at the hotel is extremely helpful and treats every guest like they were the only guest at the hotel. There is not line for check in. You are welcomed by the staff who will have you sit with a drink while they take care of the check-in procedure and they will escort you to your room. The hotel has a very trendy bar (many local young Japanese people hang out there during the day with their laptop and coffee/tea), two nice restaurants (one Western and one Japanese) and a shop with really cool merchandise. We absolutely loved the breakfast, Western style but with some Japanese flair (the soy yogurt was amazing), as well as the eggs and avocado toast. Good coffee too. We did not eat at the restaurant, but judging from the breakfast, I think it would be really good. High quality ingredients. They mini bar is stocked with nice organic juices, local beer and very nice and healthy snacks. I bought a bunch of their bars at their shop since they were so yummy. Water in the room is free. We had a great time, although the bed was a bit short for my husband who is tall, we did not mind. I'd rather stay in something local than a big American chain hotel.

A beautiful room in the coolest boutique hotel in the funnest part of town

Great vibe. All the cool kids were hanging out at the bar, working away on their laptops. Room was really nicely appointed and the balcony with view of the tree was ace. And just off Cat St for all the good shopping and eating. And then onto Yoyogi Park.

A cool hotel with a pulse in a fantastic location

Location is excellent. Very cool area and the hotel is close to the action. Still very quiet in the rooms. Great vibe in the lobby with the sharing tables. Bar was great and staff are super friendly.

Our room was extremely small which was a shock after staying at the Cerulean Towers. We did not have a wardrobe at all which was very difficult for 2 girls with big suitcases. I don't think this was mentioned in the description of the room. The standard room would be better suited to 1 person or a couple with backpacks only. I would stay at this hotel again but pay for a bigger room.

Unforgettable! Prob the best stay at a hotel we have ever had due to the surprise free uograde to a Trunk Suite. My son

From the moment we arrived we were welcomed and felt instantly relaxed. We were offered a welcome drink while we waited to be checked in

The only thing I didn’t like is that I had to leave.

It was a great location to explore Tokyo.

Liked the design of the hotel and the wooden interiors.

But the second floor section is too dangerous to climb up. Breakfast was not very good..

Tokyo perfection. Not cheap but uber hip.

The staff were exceptional, the location amazing, the design superb, the room beautiful, the beds comfortable, the windows were huge, the loft was special and the bathroom great. It was the perfect Tokyo hotel.

Great location, beautiful hotel. Looking forward to our next visit.

Beautiful hotel, great location.

Rooms were a bit small, but otherwise really great. We also thought it was interesting that the top floor was a church instead of a roof deck etc.

Modern and stylish and very welcoming and to my mind captured something very "Tokyo"

Loved the relaxed atmosphere created by the recycled materials and high ceilings. Very impressed with use of plants on the balconies of the building. More of this should be done as it really brings nature to the city. The mini bar offerings were really different and great to try. No generic boring chocolate bars! Still have the recycled rubber flip flops which are the Trunk's version of slippers. Staff were very welcoming and helpful.

Location, funky hotel, staff, restaurant, lush, leafy gardens!

Bar/lounge area felt a little off putting on entering the hotel - crazy busy & just felt a little weird like you were crashing someone’s party! Would be better having entry lobby & bar area a bit more separated.

Too cool for us

- modern and sleek room, very functional bathroom with great shower (water pressure) and amenities provided
- comfortable bed
- convenient location

- room was quite small (but this is quite standard in tokyo)
- room didn’t feel warm and inviting, even though there were a lot of “design” items. e.g. the armchair is slightly impractical and too large for the small room.
