Fantastic location for the beaches, restaurants & excursions. Breakfast buffet was very tasty with a variety of choices, all fresh fruit & freshly baked pastries & cakes etc. The gym was fine for 1 week too to stay in a fitness routine. Special mention to Iris who greeted us with a smile every morning before sitting us down to breakfast, she was excellent & also great in the rooftop bar / restaurant with us. A top professional who made our stay even better, staff like that don’t come around often!

Perfect location with beautiful room with balcony (as smokers a must) and the Copacabana lays to your feet.

It was unfortunate that we were originally given a room that had a very clear damp problem due to a water leak. However there was no issue when we requested a room change.

Great location on the copacabana beach, central to all restaurants and local shops and could watch the world go by from the balcony. Food at breakfast and evening meal was excellent with plenty of choice. Staff were very attentive especially Sascha on reception who helped us with everything we wanted to do regarding tours and arranging a local guide. We hope to return in the future as this hotel was a gem of a find.

Staff went above & beyond to help us. Comfortable room, amazing breakfast. Lots of shops and restaurants nearby. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if I was to return.

The location opposite copacabana beach was fantastic, just across the road. The beach was alive with people and games so a perfect place to watch and join in.

For such a large hotel - the 2 lifts are tiny so wait times were longer than necessary.

A little old fashioned & could do with an update - decor & facilities The lifts are ancient and take FOREVER! Especially chaotic at check out time - worse still if there are cruises in town! Not a criticism rather a suggestion - to invest in some tall high tables & chairs to take advantage of their unbelievable vistas

The location of the restaurant is right by the beachfront so well connected and accessible for walks etc. There are plenty of restaurants nearby as well. The hotel has stunning service from staff with incredible attention to detail. They are also able to help you book activities, call taxis etc. English-speaking staff also a big plus! The rooftop has incredible sundowner views and pool. The hotel also has a designated area on the beach and you have a designated hotel employee who assists with food/drink orders and is incredibly friendly. Would highly recommend!

Hotel had my room available even though I arrived very early at 9 am ....check-in time wasn't until 3. I really appreciated this but it was probably just down to availability. But always worth requesting.

A fantastic location opposite Cocacabana beach. Rooms and beds were comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. The rooftop pool area offered spectacular views. The breakfast buffet was good and food at the rooftop bar was very good, the staff there were very pleasant.

Only 2 small lifts to serve all the floors meant long waits to get the lift.

Room was small and fittings a bit tired. Our first room wasn’t very clean and on a low floor. We asked if we could have a higher room and were willing to pay for it. The receptionist was extremely rude and shouted at me which I told him was totally unacceptable. He said he had already given us an early check in and nothing was available . We got our room at 2.30pm check in was 3 pm. I refused to take the room and we were located to one floor above . Room was ok but windows didn’t shut properly so a bit noisy but manageable. As everything else was ok we just carried on. All other staff was lovely. So basically a good hotel but there’s no excuse for shouting at a customer.

The pool was too shallow

PortoBay was a great place to stay - we booked a suite with Balcony, which was well worth the money. Breakfast had so many options hot and cold and the service was fantastic, especially Wellington. Reception Sasha helped us with some bookings for evening meals in and around the hotel. Churrascaria Palace was a great meat Restaurant to visit. Danial helped us with the bikes. The house keepers kept on top of the room and kept the room clean every day. We had a problem with the safe and a maintenance person arrived within in minutes and sorted for us. We couldn't find a kettle and they brought one straight away and then we found the kettle. The views from the Balcony are great - it is noisy on the balcony as it is on a busy road, but to be expected and fun to watch how they swap the traffic and watch the lanes especially for walkers and bike riders. The 2 lads on the beach looked after our bags while we went for a swim and a walk and they even brought us an extra umbrella when they saw I was in the sun, along with ensuring we had plenty to drink from the bar. They kept the beach clean and tidy and a watered walk way off the beach. The swimming pool at the hotel is small, but we always found a bed or chair to lie on and towels provided along with a drinks service. Great Cocktails People didn't appear to stay too long around the pool and it was really relaxing in the afternoon when we got back from exploring all the sites, which you can see from the roof top pool, like Sugar loaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer. (That's when it wasn't foggy) The hotel is well placed to get an Uber to many of the other attractions in the area and well worth a trip to Saint Theresa and Lapa. You can cycle to Ipanmena Beach, but is not as clean as Copacabana and is also very noisy and more expensive. We have sign up to the Portobay Prestige App and based on this great stay are looking to book and stay at one of their other hotels.

Nothing to do with the hotel, but you need to make sure you can get on to the Bike App from you mobile to unlock them. We needed to be near wifi to unlock the bikes as we couldn't get to the app with 5G

II absolutely loved my stay at PortoBay Rio de Janeiro! The entire staff was incredibly friendly and genuinely welcoming, making me feel at home from the moment I arrived. Their attention to detail and willingness to go above and beyond truly made a difference. Whether it was the front desk, housekeeping, restaurant staff, or the team at the beach lounge, everyone was warm, professional, and eager to help. The beach lounge staff, in particular, provided excellent service, ensuring a relaxing and enjoyable experience by the ocean. It was refreshing to experience such authentic hospitality, and it really elevated my stay.

Location was exceptional across the street from the beach. Room was spacious with a nice balcony. Breakfast was excellent with a view . Staff was courteous and helpful. Nice pool and party area on the open top floor.

The electric plugs were worn and difficult to use. Old appliances , no coffee maker. Elevators were extremely small. However the large room and wonderful location trumps any negatives.

Great position on Cococabana beach with beach cafes and side street ones close by. Room was spacious with huge comfortable bed and nice bathroom. On first sight the bedroom lacks colour/personality but for the price was a bargain. Breakfast fabulous, loads of perfect tropical fruit, juices, hot bacon, sausage etc plus breads, cheeses, cold meats and more. Shallow pool on roof with plenty of loungers and fabulous views. Would stay there again

Beautiful rooms, very comfortable beds, the hotel was spotless clean, their facilities were beautiful such as the roof top pool with amazing views, the food was excellent as was the breakfast buffet. Our side beach view superior room had a view of Christ the redeemer which was a lovely surprise also. Staff were friendly and very helpful, it couldn’t have been a better stay, we will definitely stay here again

The only thing I could think of improving is the scent in the lobby, although it is clearly very clean and beautiful, a beautiful scent would elevate the already high standard and be a welcoming touch on arrival

Location breakfast

We arrived early at the hotel, before our room was ready, but our bags were stowed away safely and the staff did all they could to get us checked-in earlier than billed. Breakfast was great (lots of choice, high quality ingredients), as was a morning walk along the front, and a nice cold Brahma with a view when the sun was setting. Communication about our various add-ons was also on point.

The spa facilities were a little spartan. In fact, the sauna was turned off when we went to use it. The wait for the lifts can also be a little painful.

Portobay is a lovely hotel, if you are willing to spend a little more for a premium or suite room it's definitely worth it. The service from the staff was excellent overall. My friends and I truly enjoyed our stay at Portobay The rooftop is a little small but very nice views , pool, service and the food is great. The waiters at breakfast are super friendly, welcoming and always willing to help. Location wise you are pretty central for Copacabana with access to nice mix of local and international restaurants as well as pharmacies, Hookah lounges etc. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and yes I would 100% recommend staying at Portobay. In fact I will be using them again when I come for Carnival

We didn't get a refund!! So the only let down was booking tourist activities through the hotel . In total we booked 3 activies. The 2 we were able to complete are very subpar . In hindsight we wish we booked through trip advisor or get your guide. We had hoped that for such an incredible hotel that their vendors would be to similar level but unfortunately not , my recommendation is for the hotel to vet the vendors they work with to maintain the standard of their hotel The refund ?? We had booked a jeep tour to explore the west wild beaches of Rio a tour guide arrived and wanted to take us somewhere else in a mini van, which we didn't request anyway we spoke with the hotel manager and we were told a refund would be made. That was on the 21st of December. Till date we have not received a refund or any word/communication on this refund. It's not a lot of money but for us it's the principle and unfortunately a slight let down. Anyway love the hotel just don't do bookings for tourists activities through them!
