The Hoxton, Portland
Expert reviews
“From London-based Hoxton hoteliers comes this US outpost, right inside the Chinatown Gateway. An airy, Northwestern modernist aesthetic – clean lines, natural materials and mid-century accents – features throughout expansive communal areas and the 119 rooms, ranging in usual Hoxton sizes.”
“The Hoxton group has opened up in the hipster hot spot that is Portland, Oregon, to winning effect. Expect plenty of stylish communal areas for co-working and playing, and the group’s signature approach to living like a local while away. The Mexican restaurant and rooftop bar are both worth a visit in their own rights.”

All you need to know
While the term “hipster” may stir up debates, it’s undeniable that Shoreditch, the London neighborhood housing the original Hoxton hotel, shares some similarities with Portland, the heartland of non-mainstream culture in the Pacific Northwest.
The Hoxton, Portland, situated marginally beyond the Chinatown Gateway, adapts its traditional post-industrial style to fit a century-old edifice. However, it’s not a mere imitation of the London version.
Instead, the Hoxton group’s internal design team drew their creative ideas from the Northwest modernist movement of the 1960s and 1970s.
The rooms in this location stick to the brand’s straightforward naming convention, escalating from Shoebox and Snug to Cosy and Roomy. This honest approach sets up guests for a pleasant shock at how chic and sophisticated the rooms are, featuring dark wood decor and large, warehouse-like windows.
Additional luxury elements like Roberts radios, unique pieces of art, and comfortable beds further enhance the overall experience.

Decent. Nicely decorated.
Very stylish, good downtown location
Filthy shower with black mold/mildew. No bathroom fan. No door on shower, just a partition that let water flood the bathroom floor. No microwave in room. Constant noise from…air ducts? Pipes? Not sure. When we checked in there was a man in our room doing maintenance. Why didn’t the front desk tell him we were checking in lol

Worth the money. Friendly staffs. GREAT location
Great great location! Same street with Powell’s book store which was just a couple blocks down. Voodoo doughnuts was a minute walk just across the street. The staffs were awesome, Andre at the front desk was super helpful and welcoming!

Very nice and convenient
Andre was particularly helpful, courteous, and patient!
No view out window at all. 1st floor facilities seemed to be closed.

Very good
The staff are super welcoming and friendly, and allowed for early check in given available beds. I love the speakeasy, rooftop bar that they have here. The location is walkable to the MAX rail as well as to the other parts of downtown.
Not with the hotel itself, but the area surrounding has homeless people nearby so be careful of your surroundings.

Nice value for portland
Clean, good service
Very small rooms but well planned out

cute and great location!
Close to the Star Theater and also tram service, however not many Chinese restaurants so the food truck was for lunch. I will stay here again unless I find a hotel with a Czech restaurnt really close.
room was a bit small but fine for one.

Very good
Nice clean rooms. The beds were amazing. Good air conditioning. Friendly staff, especially Sonja (I believe her name was) our waiter at the roof top restaurant Tope. She took very good care of us and told us about nice places to visit. We relly liked the quesadilla and rockfish tacos at the restaurant and the churro bites were amazing. Very nice to lounge in the lobby area and have coffee from the in-house coffee shop. Close distance to the water front which is nice for walks, the saturday market and all kinds of stores for shopping and close but not too close to the train that can take you to Cascades station shopping center or airport for example.
The immediate area is not so great, visible drug use. But that being said we never felt unsafe. There is always someone stationed at the door/lobby.

Great hotel in a challenging and confronting location.
Lovely old refurbished building, great bedroom with fab views through dual aspects. Loved the retro vibe and views from the room on the eighth floor across cityscape to green hills. Genuinely warm welcome and helpful crew, quick check in and out with room upgrade much appreciated.
The local neighbourhood is confronting to an overseas visitor , I’m not a country mouse, (I’ve lived in Glasgow, London and Melbourne ) After checking in we felt feeling reluctant to wander at night and even during the day left bewildered by the homelessness and obvious drug culture on all surrounding streets. Portland clearly has an overwhelming problem it needs to address before the city just shuts up shop to visitors in the downtown area particularly.

Pleasant
Location was a little rough, but it’s close to a lot of attractions, so you have to way that up.

Nice hotel; rough neighborhood
Nice hotel. I’m familiar with Brooklyn NY location as well.
Neighborhood in Portland surrounding hotel is in decline with shuttered businesses/restaurants, tents on sidewalks and apparent homeless persons loitering. I didn’t feel unsafe, just depressed.

Great place, though the
Friendly staff and facilities are good enough.
Room is somewhat tight and small for a couple.

Perfect location for my Portland stay
Great location for everything I wanted to see and do. Lovely boutique feel to the hotel, friendly staff, clean & comfortable room with giod amenities, and the rooftop bar & restaurant was a real bonus!
My room was a little dark due to the close proximity of a neighbouring building.

I felt very well cared for, my pets were welcomed and the room was unbelievably comfy.
The property was gorgeous! I loved the decor and the amenities. There were beautiful vintage furnishings, but with modern high end efficiency.
I felt extremely safe at the hotel and in my room. However, through no fault of the hotel, the neighborhood felt less appealing. Traveling alone, I’d hoped to enjoy the roof top restaurant’s menu for room service. I was told they were too busy. I had to grub hub instead, so disappointed!

Fabulous
Great, friendly staff, great lobby, amazing bathroom/shower.
Food prices in Cafe were a bit extreme, carpet in the rooms was very thin-unpleasant to step on.

The area of town is not the best place to be period. The hotel itself is a gem within the din. Blocks away from the train station makes it a perfect stop over. Small Mom and pops breakfast restaurants line the main street back to the train station. A tad bit pricey for the area of town but well within for what it offers you. I did not participate with its offerings but with 3 eateries and a speak easy bar in the basement... Unlike myself, stay a few days and you won't have to leave the building to enjoy yourself.
The only drawback to this hotel is its location in the current state of Portland Oregon. Otherwise, you are in "Old Town" Portland with all its history and grandeur.

Tiny bathrooms and misleading booking
The hotel itself is really nice!
The room was poorly set up and I knocked my knee on the bench at the end of the bed. The bathroom has no area to place anything. I am not pleased that I got a queen when I booked a king- still really floored you charge the same price for both and don't alert people when longs are sold out.

Fabulous
Bed is very comfy.
Super small room but not a huge deal for 1 person.

Great hotel. Lack of Amenities & noise levels not worth the price.
The hotel is nice & clean. The staff were kind and suggested things to do within walking distance. The decor of the rooms were nice.
The price was a little off due to how small the rooms were. My room was upgraded via Booking.com from the "Shoebox", I couldn't imagine how small it would've been. For one person, the SNUG room type is fine. It would've been tight traveling with 2 people in that room. No fitness room/gym. The reviews are accurate in regards to NOISE. Being familiar with NYC noise, I thought this wouldn't bother me. The noise at this hotel was different. There are music venues, lounges, clubs, and bars nearby so a lot of foot traffic and people hanging out on the streets. The area isn't the greatest at night were there's a great number of homeless people on drugs. At 4AM people were in the middle of the street screaming. I ended up having to use earplugs to get some sleep. There's not much the hotel can do about this. Maybe request not being near street level or first 1-3 floors. Lastly, they highlight on their website (and even upon check-in) that there is a cafe at the front of the hotel & a bar downstairs. Not once during my stay was either open. That was disappointing. With this said, the pricing per night should be lower.

Super Cute, comfy, easy to park

Cute and comfy hotel in old town
I was upgraded to a corner room that got amazing light and was really comfy.
Some awkward design choices like hard to get at outlets.

Fabulous
The entire experience was very pleasant. The staff in particular were wonderful.
The location is a bit rough. Main streets are fine but there was a lot of drug use around the side streets.

Great staff, great facilities, not ideal lovation.
Centrally located with great staff. Food at the tope restaurant was great with stellar views from the outside seating. Free bike rental was a nice touch.
My room was facing Burnside street, a fairly main road. The soundproofing of the room was not particularly good, so sleep could have been better. Other reviews cover other aspects of the experience fairly accurately.

Wonderful Stay
I had a nice little room that was clean, comfortable, and had a large window. The check in and out process was easy and they kept my bag safe. Location is within easy walking distance of the light rail to the airport, which is really inexpensive.
This hotel is located in a neighborhood that has lots of nudie bars, and is used by many homeless folks, who are leaving their mark on the area. I was solo but never felt unsafe, even late at night, but the streets and sidewalks are well used and lively.

Good hotel, unfortunately the area let it down, which is a shame
The hotel was good, although the air-con was a bit noisy. Location was easy walking to good restaurants (about 15 mins walk) and the convention centre where I was attending a trade show was walkable in about 25 mins.
The area had a lot of homeless people laying around in the streets. Some were in a bad way with drug addiction and it was a bit alarming when you’re not used to it. Unfortunately it spoiled the trip for me. Some of that was quite unsanitary (urine and human faeces)

We enjoyed our stay at the Hoxton.
Right downtown, accesible to the riverfront and the Pearl District. Good remodeling job. Friendly and helpful staff.
Neighborhood is a little “sketchy.” Coffee shop was closed all during our stay. Had to upgrade our room to be comfortable.
14 August 2024
We enjoyed the hotel itself but the location was less than desirable. Hopefully Portland can do something about that.
They upgraded us to a bigger room cause the room we got literally wouldn’t fit my medium sized suitcase. That was nice.
Honestly rooms shouldn’t be that small and be called hotel rooms. My suitcase (medium size) wouldn’t have been able to be opened without concerted effort. The room was so small that the bed was tucked into the corner and it still was exceedingly small. For the price I paid if they hadn’t upgraded us I would’ve been beyond frustrated. The location is very lackluster - which isn’t the hotels fault but lots of drug addicted people everywhere. Walkable to lots of things which was good and thankfully they had security at all times but still.

For a traveler without a car or much money, a very compfortable place to stay.
Nice little room with private bath. Donated books in the room and all over the place in the lounge & lobby. Space to sit and read or work in the lounge area when no events going on. Restaurant on the roof. Limited menu and hours but nice space and decent price. Lobby coffee shop in the morning, except Sunday. Very friendly and helpful front desk people.
Coffee pot and refrigerator were not working properly, and apparently staff not available to come and check them.

Fabulous
Great location, 10 minite walk from the waterfront. The rooftop restaurant was lively and lovely. Beautiful room decor, lobby, and little cafe. We stayed in a corner room away from Burnside Ave, which was relatively quiet for a hotel downtown.
26 July 2024
Fabulous
The building, the facilities, the style, the lighting were all exceptional. The doorman was also very friendly and helpful
The receptionist we met at check in was slightly dry and cold. The attitude of the receptionist was the only thing that didn’t match the high standard of the rest of the hotel.
5 July 2024
Hits all the marks well except for the size of the room in relation to cost.
Everything met or exceeded expectations except for below.
The size of the room was ridiculous. This ended up being, per square foot, the most expensive hotel stay I've ever had. Everything else was truly fantastic but the room size would make me hesitant to stay again or recommend. The cost did not reflect the comfort of the room.
5 July 2024
Comfy, hipster, nice vibes but food was lacking
Did it see any breakfast offered except the bags that cost $5.00 for some oatmeal and a piece of fruit. the coffee shop was cute. Everyone was kind and helpful and the bed was cozy. We had the Roomy view on the 7th floor.
The rooftop food was not great at all. They forgot the meat in our dish and brought it on the side and it wasn’t great at all
28 June 2024
Gorgeous hotel but tiny room
Decor and finish of the hotel and rooms was impeccable
Size of room was very disappointing
17 June 2024
Would stay here again because of the hotel and little things they did to make our stay great.
6th floor view was great. Room was better than I expected from the description and bathroom was great. We loved the $5 breakfast option that was ready hanging outside our door when we woke up!
Con- neighborhood often has smell of urine and you need to choose a side of the street to avoid people laying/sleeping on the sidewalks. But on a positive note the Chinese garden to the east and food trucks off 3rd ave are both about 3 blocks away.

Good and bad location, but would still stay again
Property looks just like the pictures. Really Modern with a cool rooftop restaurant (did not visit) and speakeasy (did visit and drinks were decently priced and yummy). Location was everything — close to really popular restaurants and the waterfront. Easy for us to use public transportation (did not use Uber/lyft once). Right across from the gas station so easy for us to get water and snacks. People say room size was small but it was perfect for us (especially since we were only there for the weekend). The open shower concept was indeed annoying but manageable.
Location…. A good and a bad I guess. As other reviewers stated — a large increase of homelessness in Portland which is outside of the hotels control. There were a lot, A LOT of flies outdoors which made their way into the lobby. Our hotel room was on the corner of the street so it was VERY loud until 2-3 AM some nights which made it hard to sleep soundly.

Simple, convenient and easy
It was a nice hotel, small but perfect for solo travelers.
The location is supperrrrrrrrr sketchy. As a solo traveler who is a woman, I definitely wouldn't stay here again sadly :(

Fabulous
got charged for hourly parking overnight instead of as overnight guest. the rate overnight is 55 plus 15 in technology fees that we didn't know about-so $70 for parking overnight. also-getting our money back and rate adjusted was a pain in the butt.

The homeless tent city.

nice hotel, probably would stay again
the lobby and restaurant area is very stylishly decorated, and feels cozy. the bathroom in our room was beautiful and the body products and soaps all smell incredible.
our room was super teeny tiny which we knew, but didn’t really realize how small it would be until we went into it. i would stay in a bigger room next time but not sure it would be worth the higher price.

Cozy, warm feel, excellent staff!
We loved the feel of this place. The staff was excellent, decor was cozy and warm. The only thing I would note is how tiny the room was. We didn’t necessarily mind but it was a bit of a shock. Other than that, we loved it.

staff of desk valet and restaurant were exceptional
OUR ROOM WAS NOT CLEANED! We put the notice on the door and were out for 6 hours. Really wanted a clean room.

Really fun place to stay with good restaurants close by
The aesthetic is fun, retro and clean, which was nice… also, the free water and milk in room is fun and much appreciated! Check in was easy and staff incredibly nice!
Can’t think of anything!
