Kimpton Hotel Palomar, Philadelphia

117 South 17th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103, United States of America. (show on map)

The Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia is a stylish boutique hotel located in Center City, housed within the historic 1929 “Architects Building.” Designed by Paul Philippe Cret, this Art Deco landmark originally served as the headquarters for the American Institute of Architects. Today, it remains a testament to that legacy, featuring original architectural details like intricate tilework and coffered ceilings that have been thoughtfully preserved.

The hotel perfectly balances its historic bones with modern, playful luxury. Inside, you’ll find vibrant jewel tones and bold textures, along with clever artistic nods to the city, such as the trio of brightly colored Benjamin Franklin busts in the lobby. It holds the distinction of being Kimpton’s first LEED Silver-certified property, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable urban hospitality.

Life at the Palomar is all about comfort and community. Guests frequently gather in the “Living Room” lobby for the hotel’s signature nightly wine hour, a classic Kimpton tradition. For those wanting to stay active, the hotel offers custom-designed bikes and in-room yoga mats, making it easy to reset after a day of exploring.

Its prime location puts you within walking distance of some of Philly’s most iconic spots. You are just blocks away from the lush greenery of Rittenhouse Square and the world-class shopping of Walnut Street. Whether you’re heading to the nearby Liberty Bell or strolling toward the Franklin Institute, the hotel serves as an ideal, sophisticated home base for your Philadelphia adventure.

Expert reviews

Frommers review:

These 1929 Art Deco offices in the upscale Rittenhouse neighborhood have been transformed into a cozily contemporary and LEED-certified eco-minded boutique hotel from Kimpton. The rooms are modern chic, most with great city views, though a bit small.”

Lonely Planet review:

“One of Philadelphia’s two hotels in the excellent Kimpton chain, the Palomar offers stylish rooms with a jokey elegance that includes leopard-spot bathrobes. Nice touches include yoga mats in all rooms and free bicycles.”

Fodors review:

“The Palomar is the sister property to Hotel Monaco-both Kimpton properties and uber-hip hotels, though it’s the more subdued and less exciting of the two. Three brightly colored busts of Ben Franklin greet you in this Kimpton property’s chic lobby alongside a comfy fireside living room.”

Great room to enjoy Philly

The room was very clean and comfortable tho on the small side. No robes or slippers, but a yoga mat? The staff was friendly and I do recommend the breakfast at the restaurant in the lobby - the eggs Benedict were most excellent.

Perfect place to stay to enjoy graduation weekend at Penn.

Great location for hitting local stores and restaurants in Central Philly.

The elevator and hall are a bit dark and dingy.

Very central hotel with nice update rooms and impressive amenities.

Room was clean and comfortable. Lots of amenities like happy hour w/ wine selection, free non buffet breakfast, $20 room credit per night for snacks, nice gym.

I would have sacrificed some bathroom space for living/bedroom space. The bathroom was huge and nice though. Jacuzzi tub not really necessary.
Impossible to get a breakfast table unless you made a reservation ahead. Wait would have been 1 hr if no reservation. Good thing I stayed several days to find that out.
No one's fault but there was a fire alarm that went off at 11 pm. A bit inconvenient, as one of my kids was already asleep and I had to wake him.

convenient and good option for a weekend stay in Philly

nice hotel and good location.

every time I called the front desk with a question or request, the answer was a hard “no”, I didn’t feel there was a genuine desire to help and/or accommodate.

It was a pleasant stay in the heart of Philadelphia despite a very cold weekend...

Fireplace at the freezing day was exceptional.
And Happy hour with warming red wine was exclusive.
Not to mention a nice company sharing the Happy hour at the fireplace...

nothing

Just what I needed

Spacious room, classy and comfortable, good shower. Outside noise disturbed my sleep, but hotel can’t really control this. Restaurant was good, but it’s busy so make a reservation, even for breakfast.

Overall Very Nice Stay

A very nice hotel, and they offer some great perks

I seemed to have been given the wrong room but I got in late and the room was still nice so I didn't bother to mention it

A friendly and clean hotel in a great location, but if you need the elevator be prepared to wait!

Room and staff were exceptional

For a heavily booked facility with over 20 floors having only 2 working elevators was a major pain - especially when we were traveling with animals. Waiting 10+ minutes for an elevator with 3 dogs was a major problem. And 8 flights of stairs to traverse with the same 3 animals was not acceptable.

Good location near public transportation; would recommend.

Breakfast was delicious. It made the room rate an even better value.

There was a large tear in the window shade that, I feel, should have been addressed sooner.

It was more expensive than the Sofitel where my friends stayed.

Everything was very nice. Staff was great.

The rooms could use a little refresh. The lamps were worn. I did not like the automatic 20 dollar charge for mini bar no matter if you used it or not. I took 2 beers to go to spend my 20.

Enjoyable and pleasant

Rooms were very clean and comfortable

Elevators weren’t working properly. There were 4 elevators and at best only 2 were operating. Made for long wait times and cramped rides.

Okay stay I’m not sure if I’d come back yet or not. Good value but too much hassle.

Great location and valet parking

I asked 5x for a coffee maker before it was sent to my room. Cleaning staff left dirty glasses in the room and didn’t replace with new ones. Part of the facility fee was getting 2 bottles of water in the room every day but that wasn’t done unless I called. The elevators took so long that on 2 occasions I just took the stairs. There seemed to always be one of four not working and the lobby got too crowded

Kimptons are my go to when I go downtown and will continue to be as long as the price isn't crazy

Staff was excellent as usual

The everyday cleaning was fine, but the room was a little grubby with things that probably aren't addressed regularly.

Would recommend to people who could afford it.

Courtesy cold lemon water in lobby.

Room fridge was warm and had puddles of water on the bottom.

Great location the room was excellent. The staff was outstanding.

The hotel has a very nice design and the old architects building and is in a great location. The rooms were clean and really nice.

The elevators were overtaxed and took a long time to come to your floor.

We were comfortable.

Cleanliness, location, very friendly staff, the SHOWER and soaps!!!, the cheeseburgers and truffle fries. Valet crew were wonderful!

No microwave in room, no old school paper list of hotel offerings and activities. We definitely paid more for location.

In town for a “girls getaway” and to attend Springsteen concert at CBP. Very comfortable and relaxing stay at the Paloma

The room was spacious and the beds were very comfortable. Well appointed and attractive bathroom. Very nice dining room and bar with good food. Staff was friendly and helpful.

The lighting back to the elevator area was very dim. Makes it difficult to see especially when coming in from daylight.
