Kimpton Hotel Monaco, Philadelphia

433 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA 19106, USA (show on map)

The Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia is a stylish boutique hotel housed in the historic Lafayette Building, originally constructed in 1907 by the estate of philanthropist Stephen Girard and designed by noted architect James Windrim. Located in the heart of Old City, this adaptive reuse project beautifully blends neoclassical architecture with modern, eclectic interiors that celebrate the city’s rich past.

Inside, the design is inspired by the “eccentric traveler,” featuring whimsical touches like oversized Japanese calligraphy brushes and antiques that feel as if they were collected on global adventures. The hotel is also recognized as LEED Gold certified, proving that luxury and sustainability can go hand-in-hand in a historic urban setting.

One of the hotel’s standout features is the Stratus Rooftop Lounge, perched eleven stories above the street. It offers a chic indoor-outdoor space where guests can enjoy cocktails while taking in sweeping views of the surrounding historic district. Back on the ground floor, the Red Owl Tavern serves as a popular neighborhood spot for comfort food with a modern twist.

Its location is unbeatable for history enthusiasts. You are quite literally steps away from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, the birthplace of the U.S. Constitution. Whether you’re exploring the charming streets of Elfreth’s Alley, visiting the Museum of the American Revolution, or simply enjoying the vibrant neighborhood culture, the hotel serves as an ideal, personality-filled base for your Philadelphia getaway.

Telegraph review:

“Hotel Monaco — a cobblestone’s throw from Philadelphia’s historic attractions — is a layer cake of whimsical furnishings and audacious colours baked in the mould of an early-20th-century bank building. Perfect location for a stay in Old City, Philadelphia

The location is absolutely unbeatable. Your hotel window looks out at Independence Hall (depending on your room) and you can hear the Independence Hall bell ring each hour. You can also see the long lines to get into the building with the Liberty Bell. In short, you’re in the very center of Old City, with the main attractions right at your fingertips. The rooms are pretty comfortable (when everything is working) and are in decent shape. Also, the service is great and everyone is friendly.

For a 4-star hotel, there are practically no amenities for children. I realize that this is a big city hotel and not a resort, but there could be some more entertainment. The amenities are a bit bare-bones. Also, the restaurant - Red Owl Tavern - has a fancy menu, but we ate breakfast there only once, and it was so unsatisfactory that we didn’t eat there again. That being said, the service at the restaurant - similar to the rest of the hotel - was excellent! Finally, we had issues with the HVAC system and had to sleep without it on at night. After the first night. The HVAC was supposedly fixed by the engineer, but it still didn’t work properly. Fortunately, the temperature for the rest of the stay was comfortable at night, so we didn’t need it at night anymore. We were offered an upgrade to a suite, but it would have been too much of a hassle to move to a different room so we decided to stay. The management team gave us a $100 discount for our troubles. Finally, the Valets are great, but you never know how long it’ll take from the time that you request the car to the time that it arrives. Thus, it makes planning a bit difficult.

Top choice for Philly

Location and everything a top hotel is about --- location and quality. Across the street from Independence Hall and Liberty Bell, a couple of blocks from Ben Franklin's house and grave, other must see historical sites, including all of Old City. Plus, superb facilities and service. What's not to like?

No coffee, tea or water in the room

Beautiful, comfy and in the heart of history

This is the most beautifully appointed hotel in Philadelphia. I love that the furniture in the room is high quality and looks like furniture you would put in a bedroom. The art and decor is designer influenced. The beds are comfortable and so is the seating in the lobby. Even the lobby coffee is good. You are in the heart of history and can get to the best restaurants and attractions easily. Ive stayed at Sofitel, the Warrick and several other lesser hotels. This is by far my favorite. The reason I don't stay here all the time is because of the price. I happened to get a good deal but that is rare.

The staff could be more professional and friendly but I think that's a problem everywhere today.

A great choice especially for tourists!

I booked a parkview room and that is exactly what I got, so that was good. The room was roomy and comfy. Lighting (in the room) was good and bed was great, very comfy along with the pillow choices. Robes were very nice too. Bathroom had a makeup mirror. I was attending a wedding and have been to Phila many times. However as a tourist this is a great location Independence Plaza and Hall plus the Liberty Bell are just step from the front door. You're right in the middle of the historic area of the city. I enjoyed my weekend stay.

My biggest problem was the bathroom lighting was terrible, I had to keep running to the window to apply my makeup with my hand help makeup mirror so while they had a makeup mirror in the bathroom, the lighting made if very difficult to use. I would have liked a coffee machine in the room although they will bring you one if you need it, Bring water. They only have this very expensive designer water.

Best location, and a really funky place. Would return.

Great location to be a tourist in the Old Town with everything at your doorstep, literally across the road to Independence Hall.

Not a lot, the front entrance on the weekend was a mad house which could do with better organisation but reception staff were great and their wine tasting from 4-6 pm a nice surprise.

A charming and elegant hotel with exceptional service.

I had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The rooms had a classic elegance and charm that gave the place a timeless feel. Everything was exceptionally clean, and it’s clear the staff takes pride in maintaining the space. The staff was also incredibly helpful, friendly, and welcoming, which made the experience even better. The breakfast in the morning was spot on with a great variety of fresh options and a perfect start to the day. Highly recommend if you're looking for comfort with a touch of old-world class.

If I had to point out one downside, it would be the mattresses. They were a bit stiff and left me with a sore back in the morning. That said, it wouldn’t stop me from staying here again, given how great everything else was.

Fabulous

The Kimpton Hotel experience is uniformly very good, and the Kimpton Hotel Monaco was no exception. The staff in particular made this experience exceptional as our room was ready and they allowed us to check in early. The location of the hotel and view of Independence Hall from the room itself all made for a great experience.

It would be ideal not to have to pay additional for water in the room. It is, however, available in the lobby.

A relaxed time was had.

The room was amazingly designed. The Bed was comfortable. The bathtub was fantastic 👏🏽! My favorite part of the room. The room service was good as well as the food. My views were gorgeous.

The TV was acting a little wonky and hard to use. The toilet was running a lot too.

Great hotel in a fantastic location.

Great location. Lovely decor. Liked the free wine each evening.

Some of the fittings in the room were a bit tired (broken edges on the bathroom mirror, broken corners on the desk etc). The roof terrace was more like a night club - we couldn’t get on to it.

Great location, fantastic breakfast

Great location. Best breakfast ever.

Hotel didn't receive payment through Booking.com. Staff didn't do the slightest effort to check what went wrong, instead they charged me again and told me to solve it out with Booking.com. I would have appreciated at least some effort, as I have provided payment evidence.

We head an excellent stay at Kimpton Hotel Monaco in Philadelphia. Great location!

The room was comfortable but a little dated. The mattresses were firm and comfortable. Housekeeping did a good job of cleaning our room. The location of the hotel was excellent for visiting the historical sites in Philadelphia. We really enjoyed The Red Fox Tavern (restaurant associated with the hotel). We had breakfast at the hotel every morning along with several dinners. Good menu and very hospitable service. I would definitely stay here again if visiting Philadelphia.
