Le Citizen Hotel, Paris

96 Quai de Jemmapes, 75010 Paris, France (show on map)

Le Citizen Hotel is a unique boutique gem perched directly on the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin in Paris’s vibrant 10th arrondissement. Unlike the city’s grand, gilded palaces, this intimate property prioritizes refined simplicity and contemporary elegance. With only 12 rooms, each bathed in natural light and offering unobstructed views of the water, it offers a rare, peaceful vantage point to watch local life—including the canal’s famous locks—unfold from your window.

Designed by Christophe Delcourt, the hotel embraces a zen-like, eco-conscious aesthetic. The interiors feature clean lines, warm woods, and natural materials, creating a serene cocoon that feels worlds away from the busy streets outside. The hotel also showcases thoughtful artistic touches, including works from the Californian Creative Growth art center, adding a layer of soul to the minimalist design.

Beyond its stylish rooms, the hotel is a hub of local culture. The ground floor houses a popular New York-style pizzeria and an artisanal café, making it a neighborhood staple rather than just a place to sleep. It is perfectly positioned for those who want to live like a local, surrounded by the canal’s trendy wine bars, natural bakeries, and lively pockets of greenery like the Jardin Villemin.

Its location is incredibly practical, situated just a short walk from the Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est transport hubs. Whether you are strolling to nearby boutiques or taking the metro to the city’s major museums, Le Citizen offers a quiet, authentic base in one of Paris’s most genuinely lived-in neighborhoods.

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“This alluring 12-room boutique hotel on the banks of Canal St-Martin was the first to bring iPads, filtered water and a warm minimalist design to this once-edgy part of town.”

Fodors review:

“Le Citizen features a minimalist-chic decor, high-tech touches like loaner iPads, and a cool east-Paris vibe. The focus is urban and eco-friendly, and the spirit reflects the neighborhood, young, hip, friendly, and plugged-in.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Paris.

Great little boutique hotel on the canal

Great location on the canal, comfy bed, soundproof windows. Helpful staff but didn’t see anyone more than once during our stay.

The room is very small and no desk.

Comfortable and relaxing hotel in a cool location

Great location, friendly staff, nice room on the 6th floor with good views and not too noisy despite being in a busy area on a Friday night

Bathroom had a few issues. A bit of a leak from the shower

Great location for exploring the Canal St. Martin neighborhood!

Le Citizen is a charming boutique hotel perfectly situated along the canal. You really walk out your door into everything here.
We loved the neighborhood, so many great restaurants, bars and shops. Great for those who aren’t looking to stay near the more touristy parts of town.
The room was tiny but well-designed for maximum functionality. The bed was comfy and we loved the windows you could open for the breeze. The shower was hot and strong and we loved the upscale soap and shampoo.
The staff was super friendly and accommodating.

Our only complaint was a strong deodorant smell that seemed to be masking something. I’m very sensitive to strong odors so this was off putting to me.

Excellent place, for me the nicest arondissement in Paris

The bar was in remodelation so the breakfast was "take away".

Excellent service, clean and cosy rooms, overall a very nice experience.

The service was perfect, the lady at the reception was very kind and helpful. The rest of the staff was helpful as well. The breakfast was quite decent (we loved the croissants), but in my humble opinion it could include more options and the portions could be a bit bigger (more value for money). Metro station very close to the hotel. Great view and beautiful place overall. Clean rooms, small but very cosy. Nice bathroom and very good showers. Beds were very comfortable.

Maybe the only downsides were that the fridge was a bit difficult to access/open. Sometimes the cleaning staff forgot to bring towels and some of the power sockets didn't function properly (our phone chargers didn't work properly most of the times). Sound proofing was not bad, it could be better though.

Decent location, clean, lovely staff.

Rooms are small, no proper reception (as being renovated).

Well-managed, small hotel with a hip vibe and very friendly staff.

This hotel is a well-managed little gem in a great neighborhood. Some of the rooms are small, but creatively arranged so they are very comfortable and cozy. It's a very hip vibe. Staff are very attentive to guests.

It's slightly expensive, but you are paying for the location, which can't be beat.

Very enjoyable short stay, in a cool part of Paris!

Great location right on the Canal St Martin, with super friendly staff who gave us great recommendations and made terrific Australia-quality coffees! Our room was lovely with a view over the canal and the rooftops of Paris!
We had a very enjoyable short stay, in a cool part of Paris with a great vibe and lots of restaurants, only a short walk from the metro - the one that leaves from the Place de la République takes you straight down to the Seine and a lovely walk to the Eiffel Tower!

It’s not a typical hotel with a lobby to sit, a bar, restaurant etc., but appears to be an apartment building which was turned into a hotel. That said, we’d book it again because it has everything we are looking for when we visit a city.

Pleasant room in a great neighbourhood

The breakfast was great. It was a basic Parisian breakfast - croissant, coffee, bread/butter/jam, but with good coffee and fresh orange juice. Room was spacious. We were on the 1st floor and it was not noisy. Chaim, the hotel manager, is very friendly and helpful with your stay. The room had a coffee machine, water kettle, and the bathroom had great soaps.

Everything was fantastic.
If I had to mention one thing, it's that it was 2 single beds merged into one instead of a queen size bed.

Great location. Quiet neighborhood full of locals. Friendly staff.

Location was great. Staff were friendly.

For some reason they don’t replace the towels even if we leave them on the floor all wet. There was one day where our room was not cleaned even though we asked for it to be cleaned. Wet towels were still on the floor, bed was not made, bin was not cleared. Also, air con doesn’t always work.

I would certainly stay here again.

Very comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff, and great neighbourhood. Wonderful view of the Canal Saint-Martin.

Continental breakfast was good but very basic, ie tea/coffee with croissant or bread or pain au chocolate. The fresh orange juice was excellent.

A super-friendly, comfortable and easy place to stay in a beautiful neighbourhood

Brilliant location, comfortable, easy and friendly place to stay. It was our second stay and we’ll be back

Nothing although I’d been looking forward to sitting in the bar doing some people watching and they’re currently reconfiguring that area so I had to people watch elsewhere. Very excited about their plans though.

Lovely Stay in Gorgeous Location

Amazing location right on the Canal St Martin; all four of our rooms overlooked the canal which was fantastic; staff are super friendly and helpful; check-in was bright, breezy and easy....

As is often the case in Paris, rooms are on the small side - that's okay though as there's so much to explore and see in the neighbourhood.... There's very little communal space in the hotel to chill and relax if that's your thing.... A few signs of wear and tear here and there too but didn't bother us.

Best Paris hotel we have tried!

There were many positives including:
- Great location on the canal with loads of bars, restaurants and boutiques nearby.
- Outstanding welcome, support and advice from staff, especially Chaim who went over and above on every aspect.
- Lovely big rooms for a boutique hotel.
- Immaculate throughout.
- Great extras in room like fridge, safe, coffee machine, hairdryer, steamer and lots of cupboard space.

The only thing we would feedback was that the shower tended to flood the floor but it was a wet room so not a big issue.

Comfortable, clean and efficient with a friendly welcome

A comfortable place for a one night stopover on our way back to the UK via Eurostar: a 20 minute walk to Gare du Nord. Our room was compact and well- designed with an excellent shower and extremely comfortable bed. It was nice and light, with windows overlooking the canal. Check-in process online was very efficient, and it was helpful to have a few restaurant recommendations (one of which we used - Hotel du Nord - very good). Breakfast was simple but good: freshly squeezed orange juice, pot of tea or coffee and croissant or baguette.

We wanted this location, so we overlooked some faults.

The room was very small, which we expected, but the use of space (particularly the bathroom) was a little better than expected. The included breakfast was as expected - a good cup of fresh (really fresh) OJ, a coffee of your choice, and a pain au chocolate. But the "highlight" was the staff who all really tried to be helpful and friendly.

The room was small - we knew that, it was well designed, but it was only okay because we wanted the location so badly. And the lack of air conditioning meant that the windows had to be open, which allowed more noise.

In need of a refurb

Cute boutique hotel in a great neighbourhood. It was my second stay here (with a few years gap). The room is nice and you can see the design was thought through. Easy check in and easy to find.

It is all a bit dated and in need of refurb with lots of small details falling apart. The breakfast staff looked overwhelmed on both days and it was not well organised. I even had a 'cup' of tea with cold water poured over loose tea leaves with no strainers... One of the guy even grabbed the croissant with his bare hands, which wasn't cool. I wouldn't hold that against the hotel other than saying they should train their employees for basic requests at breakfast. Not sure I'll stay there again.

Good base for short stay in interesting area of Paris.

great location by canal, we enjoyed exploring. Central, close to transport. nice views from room and guys at reception and breakfast were very friendly. Room was small but we knew that in advance.

small thing - bread at breakfast was not great (even though lovely bakeries close by) but croissant and fresh orange juice were good.

Great small hotel, well located in a buzzy neighbourhood

Only 15 mins walk from Gare du Nord. Great little hotel, friendly and excellent location. Comfortable room/bed and good shower! And speedy wifi.

Breakfast was simple… a piece of (good!) baguette with jam, juice and tea/coffee. That’s it.

Perfect spot to rest oneself during a brief stay in Paris. We were very happy and have already recommended the hotel to

It’s a small boutique hotel in the coolest neighborhood in Paris. The hotel staff is friendly and welcoming. They offer a simple breakfast each morning and had great advice/input about activities to partake in during a stay. The room is clean, comfortable, and well equipped. It’s not a luxury hotel but great value and was wonderful with the family.

Convenient for short stays

Loved the location and the staff! The bed was also super comfy. We didn’t have a toothpaste but the staff was kind enough to provide us after we asked. We only stayed one night and it was decent; would be hard with a suitcase as the room was quite small. Breakfast was simple but delicious. Would stay here again for a short trip! Thanks

Wifi wasn’t the most reliable
