The Esmé, Miami

Expert reviews

CN Traveler review:

“A funky boutique hotel with Jazz Age roots and a neo-Spanish-Mediterranean vibe, there’s excellent food and drink here and a lovely rooftop pool and lounge.”

New York Times review:

“The Esmé Miami Beach, a former hostel, was converted into a tasteful boutique hotel, washed in pale pinks and greens, at the mouth of the revitalized Española Way, a historic promenade. The area is young, sometimes chaotic, filled with shops and cocktail clubs like Tropezón gin bar, a block from South Beach.”

Telegraph review:

“Espanola Way’s ‘village’ has been restored over five years to its former glory and is now welcoming guests as Esmé. It’s fun and fabulous and will make you feel the same, an ode to maximalism with a killer rooftop pool deck and excellent cocktails to be enjoyed. South Beach just got even sexier.”

What guests liked

All you need to know

The Esmé Hotel in Miami Beach is like stepping into a dreamy, mini Spanish-village tucked just off bustling Española Way. Housed across eight beautifully restored buildings, its design mixes moody jewel tones with vintage flair, paying homage to its bohemian 1920s roots.

You’ll find cozy rooms with bold textures, secret paseo alleys to wander, and even a standalone guesthouse called Casa Matanza (rumored to have past ties to Al Capone) just across the street.

But the hotel isn’t just a pretty face. It’s buzzing with life. Up on the rooftop, there’s a charming pool, cabanas, and a bar where you can catch happy hour or even Pilates at sunset.

Down below, the eatery options range from Mediterranean fare at The Drexel to tapas and drinks in a speakeasy-style bar.

And if you want to unwind or mingle, Esmé hosts laid-back musical nights, yoga, and even vintage tiki-bar vibes in the Bamboo Room, all wrapped up in a stylish, artful escape.

Clean and comfy retro styled hotel in heart of South Beach.

The style and location. Very retro. Great shower. Comfy bed and pillows. All clean. It was quiet where we were.

It was a very small room with no place to put baggage. Okay for an overnight or two. I was insulted when I gave the porter a $5 tip. “Oh great, now I can buy a beer!” Maybe I’m just out of step with tipping rules. We only had a total of two carry on bags. The gentleman at the desk was polite enough but defensive, it was apparent he has to deal with a few irate customers. Perhaps management should ask why.

Very good location

Location was great. Rooms were comfortable. Roof top bar was great. Quiet hotel. Hotel amenities included a bike.

Room was much smaller than what we expected. Window view was directly in front of large outdoor AC units. Some staff were very friendly and some were average.

Stunning hotel and perfect location

Absolutely stunning hotel, walking distance to the beach, we never struggled to get our complimentary lounges. Espanola way is the perfect location, always a vibe and something to do. The hotel itself is art.

The pool renovations were underway which was frustrating, we were redirected to their sister hotel which isn't nearly as nice and we did struggle to get seating and towels. The rooms are really small.

Great location, small but full of character.

Great location, plenty of restaurants nearby. In walking distance to the beach & Ocean Drive. We made use of the complimentary bicycles & cycled down the front one afternoon. The room was small but from reviews we expected this. Only stayed for 2 nights & hardly spent any time in the room.

No rooftop pool, when this has been refurbished it will be a lovely addition to the hotel.

Expensive food eat all around however a great spot for your wife

And it’s a nice looking boutique hotel

I didn’t like the fact that upon checking out, I had to pay $85 for an umbrella does not make any sense and I feel like I got robbed. They were not trying to understand and they charge me for the umbrella which I didn’t really have a control over. I want my Money back because this is the total set back upon leaving to go home.

Good location and cute small hotel

The location was great, so close to the beach and lots of restaurants

We booked the hotel as it also had a pool, it was disappointing to find out that the pool was under renovation and we weren’t told in advance. They offered us to use a different hotel’s pool 7 min walk away that it was way too small to accommodate 2 hotels guests and just not convenient. We had free bikes included but the hotel only has a few bikes available so even at 8.30 in the morning, the bikes were taken

Great for couples for a few days close to beach and nightlife

Great location close to beach and many restaurants and bars. Hotel has a great vibe and is nicely decorated. Room was clean and well maintained, equipped with everything necessary. Great that daily use of beach chairs and towels were included.

The room was a bit on the small side and the pool/bar was closed for renovation at the time of our stay (set to reopen midway November 25). Both of this I knew before booking so not really a complaint.

Wonderful breakfast, great location and design of the hotel, nice staff. Good value for the price.

The room was tiny, couldn't open a suitcase. Also the pool was close for renovation and we didn't get a heads up, the substitute pool was 10 minutes walk to a different hotel...

Disappointed that the roof area wasn’t available.

I’ve stayed at the Esme many times and really like the hotel. The main draw for me is the rooftop with a nice bar and pool. This time the roof was closed for maintenance…..it would have been great to get a heads up. It wasn’t even mentioned when I checked in, I discovered it when I wanted to go up, ready with my book and looking forward to have a nice drink. Quite disappointed. Communication matters.

Roof area was unavailable.

We all loved the location and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Excellent location, excellent service from the staff in reception, very clean hotel and the happy hour was a nice touch, 2 free drinks.Breakfast was also served to 11am, which was nice, as we never felt rushed. Ideal for a 3/4 night stay. Air con, safe and coffee machine in room. Bed was really comfortable. Would definitely recommend and stay again.

Unfortunately, for our stay the rooftop pool was still getting refurbished (ready for November I was informed), but we were offered use of another nearby. Rooms were small, and the lighting could be improved, otherwise no major issues.

Disappointed by the management but the hotel has a great potential if they were more customer focused

Great location and nice breakfast. Very serviable night shift personnel (Thank you Larry!).

Unfortunately not the most professional front desk (especially management when complained about not being able to use the pool or the rooftop bar). Hence, be careful before booking as both the pool and the rooftop were closed for renovation, something we were not informed about. Considering the amount of hotels WITH a pool, we wouldn’t have booked this one if we knew about the renovations in advance. So we had to walk for 10min one way to access a very average pool in another hotel.

Very good

I liked the staff , location and decor of the rooms . Nice Restuarant closed by. It's a very boutique hotel feel.

Bookings did not inform me of the incidental fee. Which was 100usd per night . Coming from Trinidad that's alot to hold from your credit card without fore knowledge,we have a limit on mthy spending in the USA. Also the way the shower is designed, water spills over into into the bathroom. Well in the room I got. Also keep in mind the room has no bottle water, so walk with yours .

Great location and all the staff were very helpful and friendly. Bed was really comfortable. The vibe in the hotel was perfect, quite and relaxing such a change once you walked in off the busy street.

Very good

Great breakfast! Fresh pastries, fruit, juice, yougurt. Protein, though, was only represented by hard-boiled eggs.

Unfortunately, the swimming pool was closed for remodeling. Also, one day our room was not cleaned and when we called the reception to ask for fresh towels, we were promised it to be delivered to our room, but never got it. One hiccup in the service. If not for that, it would be perfect and 10 out of 10.

All and all my stay was quite wonderful, and staff was very nice and helpful.

The ease and accessibility of everything in south beach was amazing. I truly enjoyed having so many options be it at the hotel it's self or just a block or two on foot. The Esme's pool was closed for renovations upon my visit however the hotel negotiated with a near by hotel to allow guest to use their pool and lounge area, it was a bit of a walk but allowed for a nice exploration of near by restaurants and shops along the way. I can't think of a time the staff was not accommodating or unable to answer any questions (There were many as I traveled with several friends and we all had questions). The room though smaller than pictured was nice and comfy, with an amazing shower. Day time and night time were always a different experience at the Esme. Day time was more relaxed and casual while night time they had a bar (the bamboo room) which allowed guest and locals to enjoy a good time. I felt as if the hotel embraced the local community very well and had a rich history in south beach.

There were a few details left out of the hotels description when booking or at the very least could have been sent out to guest before arriving. Things like the rooftop pool and lounge are were under heavy renovations, and being that my assigned room was on the top floor sleeping in would not have been an option due to construction sounds. The first two nights of my stay had a fire alarm go off at 3am to which it was explained later being due to having restaurants attached to the building and they had steam cleaning taking place which set the alarms off? The 2nd time these alarms went off there was a front desk employee named Larry who handled the influx of upset guest with amazing professionalism, and had to be very difficult due to the amount of upset guest who seemed to take the alarm as an offense instead of a safety requirement as it very well should be a comfort that one works so well and that it could be shut off in a timely manner in such awkward situations. (we were never outside longer than 15 or 20 mins).

Beautiful boutique hotel that is central to just about everything

This hotel is not just one hotel, but more like a mini village of different buildings. I stayed in one of the rooms in "The Drexel". The hotel was very quaint and I enjoyed the decor and little nooks to hang out and relax in. The location is great - there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, most things are within walking distance and the trolly loop pickups are close enough to walk to. I loved the fact that the room came with beach chair and towel rentals as I utilized those a couple of times. The pool was under construction at the time, so they sent us down the street to "The Kenmore" to use their pool which was nice and had chairs and cabanas to use. Every single staff member that we came into contact with was wonderful and more than willing to help with whatever we needed. I have to say the best part of the stay was the bed. I ripped all the bedding off of it to find a tag so I could look it up. If you're wondering, the mattress is from "Mattress Concierge" and our bed was from their plush line. I've been home for 2 days and I already ordered a mattress from them. Overall, I would stay here again.

Believe the reviews that speak to how small the rooms are. This is probably the smallest hotel room I've ever stayed in, aside from hostels. Not a deal breaker for this trip as we were only there for about 5 days, but if we had any more luggage or were there for a longer stay, we would've had to go elsewhere. My husband is a bodybuilder, so he's a little thicker and wider than your average man and he really wasn't comfortable in the bathroom because of the size. The walls are thin and the doors need to be pulled closed as they won't close on their own - this made it a bit noisy with everyone yanking their door closed throughout the night. The breakfast was light and limited in choices - think yogurt, fruit, toast, pastries, etc. If you're looking for a heavier, more filling breakfast like eggs and meat, you'll have to pay up for it or go somewhere else. And when I say pay up, I literally mean pay up, like as in $8 for 2 eggs pay up. Miami is expensive in general, but if you do your research you can find a few places with a decent and cheap filling breakfast. There are no ice machines anywhere, but they will bring you a bucket of ice if you call the front desk and request it.

A hotel that lives up to its reviews

The location of the hotel is truly perfect. Being right on Ocean Drive, Lincoln Road, and South Beach makes the stay such a pleasure. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The rooms are very clean. The internet speed is excellent. Having in-house restaurants also makes everything much easier. It’s a very safe hotel and neighbourhood, ideal even for solo stays. I can definitely say this is a hotel I would choose again on my next visit.

Breakfast was rather weak. Although you can order many extras at an additional cost, I was surprised to see some very basic items missing. That being said, the quality of what was available was good. I should also note that the pillows on the beds were extremely thick, which was uncomfortable. In a climate where the air conditioning needs to run constantly, I would have expected thicker blankets in the rooms. From a sustainability perspective, it would also have been nice if room cleaning were optional — for example, with a badge or sign to leave at the door. Since this option wasn’t provided, housekeeping was done every day. And yes, the lighting in the rooms was incredibly poor.

I would for sure book this hotel again.

The staff was amazing and super helpful. I loved the bars that they had on property - very picturesque and comfortable. The beds were comfortable and nice. I loved that they had bikes available to use, which made exploring the city even more enjoyable.

I wasn't a fan of cleanliness of the carpet in the room. It was rather dirty and looked like it needed to be shampooed. Being guests at the hotel, you get lunge chairs at the beach, but once we got to the beach, we were told by the attendants that the chairs don't come with an umbrella, which was not mentioned by the front desk staff. We ended up purchasing an umbrella, but I do think staff should first inform people of the possible added expense, if their contract with the beach company doesn't indeed come with an umbrella.
